  • Let's face it, great deer herds and hunts are built during the hunting season and not during the Summer. Are your food plots down to the dirt during the heart of the season? Fertility levels and weed control aren't the only considerations for making sure that you create enough food at the right time of the year to produce enough food for adequate deer hunting plots. Offering food plots during the hunting season allows you to give deer nutrition at a time when the local habitat has often been significantly depleted and at a time when whitetails need food plot the most. Here are 5 tips for making sure that your deer hunting food plots have enough volume, this season.

    Another informative video, thanks Jeff! I do have to comment about something. Last year was my first year with a food plot. I ran short on time and had to buy some off the shelf sed a the local TSC. It was a mix of brassicas and winter oats. I did two half acre plots. I have a huge farm field behind me that rotated between corner soy beans every year. Last year was soy beans and the deer tore up my two plots. The plots kept up but I was amazed that the deer really hit the two plots as much as they did with the huge soy bean field very close by. All that to say, you really never know what deer are going to do, it is a very interesting hobby and deer always amaze me with how they react. Thanks again!

    You should have your own show on the outdoor channel lol your short informative videos are better than the bs on tv 👍🏻👍🏻 also wondering Jeff.. what would you recommend planting in a plot? Any certain brands or is it better off going to feed store and buying a bunch of different seeds? Thanks

    We use a electric fence with beans and let them get full grown and let the deer in just before bow season. Seems to work really good

      Taylor Burch don’t the deer just jump the fence,

    • @taylorburch7761
      @taylorburch7761 5 років тому

      Carter Larson Nope it’s an illusion the fence is a two layer fence of only three strands. First layer is 20 inches off the ground the second layer is 36” behind that wire and two strands at 10” and 30” it’s just an optical illusion that they can’t judge so they won’t jump it. I have beans that grew out side my fence that were eaten immediately. Inside the fence not a single bean has been touched. I also have a stupid high deer population so if it wasn’t for the fence I couldn’t even grow alfalfa.

    What I’m noticing when I checked my cams yesterday all my deer (including the bucks. Young/mature) come 5:30am-10:45am then return 6:30pm-12am. They hit the protein feeder non stop and travel back and forth to the plot (clover, oats, vetch and chicory) it’s non stop action! With reducing my footprint with the atv the deer are becoming more active in the day light granted it’s not season yet but if I did the pressure now it won’t bite me in the rear later!

    Sir, I am a new subscriber. I listen to you talk about blends and such and have just one question. Different seeds require so many pounds per acre. When blending these seeds; let's say peas, beans, and oats do you go by each seeds pound per acre or do you dial them down?

  • @stark_outdoors

    I'm planting a couple smaller kill plots inside of my woods and my cousin is farming the fields planting mostly corn with a soybean foodplot on the edge of the woods. He's giving me the beans for free and leaving a section of standing corn. Should I add anything else to the beans?

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  5 років тому +1

      I actually wouldn't personally plant soybeans for a kill plot...instead leaving them bare for the Summer so deer don't use them until the Fall. You really want deer off of kill plots until the Fall so that whatever you do plant on them for the Fall has a chance of staying green and productive for the hunting season. Layered Winter rye, peas and oats are a great combo for kill plots...even clover in some southern locations (lower Midwest). The first layer should be planted in August depending on where you are at, but I personally would avoid soybeans for a kill plot....very limited for the season and most small kill plot plantings don't make it into the early season.
      Let me know if this makes sense...

      @@stark_outdoors you are welcome Clayton! Try adding those beans a to a good green blend in August...50#s per acre, 50#s oats, 100#s peas early...too dress with 200#s per acre of winter rye roughly 4-6 weeks later.

I was lucky enough to retire early in age from the New Jersey State Police 8 years ago, as such even though I have a part-time retirement job I can still work my habitat almost daily. I have been working my 23 acres for almost 5 years now and consider myself as a Micro-Micro Habitat Manager. Can one do too much in the off season? Cris

    Great video Jeff! If your in a big woods area, northern Mn. How do you not have the deer hit your food plots all night as a destination plot?

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  5 років тому +1

      Thanks Brian! It is tough. The first step is to have high quality browse cuttings and browse growth in your cover, which diminishes daylight food plot browsing pressure. The 2nd important aspect is to make sure that tour food plots are located to funnel deer off of tour land after they feed in the afternoon. Hopefully the deer are positioned to leave your land after dark. However, it is tough to get them to leave at times in northern settings. I had the benefit of nearby bait piles in November...which was a great help for getting deer off my land during the middle of the night. Often the answer is the need to offer more food plot acreage per acre in the northern wilderness settings, compared to lands that benefit from the compliment of ag settings. This is the same for big wooded parcels anywhere...MO, KY, PA, NY...doesn't matter really if north or south other than southern Midwest settings tend to hold more daylight browse opportunities.

Last year I planted An acre of clover on one end and a Brassica mix on the other end of the Property and the deer could care less about it I put cameras in never hunted them 1 time pull the cameras a month ago and they're just passing through. Great info as always. As you know my greatest problem was planting all our plots TOO early, and competing with the Ag fields and having the deer decimate them. This year we will be planting later, as per your recommendations. Have you had a chance to look over my e-mail concerning your recommendations? Back is doing a little better, on the mend.
    thanks, Bob

      U must not b in vermont. The deer herd is terrible. So we need to suck them in with ag and summer plots. And all the big bucks are satellite bucks. Only the 159lbers hang around
