  • Hello Sweethearts!
    Heres my little step by step tutorial on how to put together a fantasy costume. For a larp, a costume party, halloween, a convention, a renaissance festival , or just a little game of adult dress up.

    Dark Skin Elf Ear advice
    Most recommended this website, where you can get your prosthetics in 4 different skin tones:
    www.aradani.com/
    "Aradani will also paint the ears to look like your particular skin tone if you catch them at a convention and buy ears from them there. :) They're very good at providing different shades."
    - Catie
    "I basically got a make up sponge and some Ben nye make up and painted. that was, probably almost 10 years ago. they still look pretty decent. I just need new ones now because, I'm a dumbass and I didnt clean the prosaid off of them last time i wore them, so now they're stuck together"
    - Diana
    "I bought my ears online I think and then a friend who is a makeup expert painted them for me in my skintone. It took sometime but it was worth it. She used Kryolan colors if I remember correctly."
    - Anna
    "I buy Werewolf ears, they all slope backward rather than forwards though. They are a little darker than me, but way closer than the defualt White/Pink that is the only color I have ever been able to find in Elf ears. It was a sad experience when I realized the only ears I could find in my skin tone were the animal/monster ones."
    - Adam
    "Swedish edularp company Lajvverkstaden made the same observation years ago and manufactured elf ears in a multitude of skin tones. If your locally available manufacturer doesn't provide maybe they're open to it if asked? "
    - Johannes
    "would totally look into highlight tutorials.
    Becca shimmering skin perfector (liquid) gives amazing dewy-glowy-looking skin, perfect for an elf (their range isn’t great, but have seen the colour topaz work wonders on dark skin). Top it with a bit of powder-highlighter on the cheekbones and nose for full on shine."
    - Liv
    " I hate prosthetic ears. I hate them because they are generally uncomfortable and they always stick in my hair and look extra fake to me. They take fucking forever to paint up to my exact skin tone as well....So I started creating elaborate wire ear covers that had the illusion of pointed ears. They are a life saver. I can just pop them on and it really looks like my ears are pointed and I get cute jewelry as well. "

      Even as someone who doesn't LARP, I know how hard it must be finding ears (or any prosthetic) in more than one shade. It's kind of a piss-take at this point.

    Depending on the species the deer might nt have died at all. Most species shed their antlers once a year. So antlers are usually 100% ethical.

    I feel like I'm being so pedantic, but what you did isn't stay stitching. Topstitching is what you did. A staystitch stops the fabric stretching out when you're making things (usually done at a neckline or waist) as when cut on the bias some areas stretch out and distort themselves.
    Honestly, from someone who has sewn for 15yrs, you did it in the same order I would have done and you did it brilliantly!

    I'm so excited you're getting to go to several LARPs this year (and getting to have fun at them, not just workworkworkworkwork). YAY! Also, with the sewing: it'll be easier if you cut the curved seams *after* you sew the two layers together (and also reduce risk of cutting through the seam allowance)- aside from that, as a novice sewer you have an excellent grasp of sewing techniques and whys. YAY!

    Would you be willing to do another cloak tutorial, more in depth and with more measurements?
    That would be amazing! I have only ever sewed a couple of times and am actually better at hand sewing than machine, so it would be awesome to see you demonstrating exactly how you make your cloaks. (I can never find ones that fit me right 🙄)

    • @robynndoesstuff7495
      @robynndoesstuff7495 5 років тому +1

      A really easy way to make cloaks that I personally used a lot (I had one week to make a full costume basically) is to just take a big square and gather it to the width that you want it to be on your shoulders, and the hood can basically be two rectangles if you want a pointy one or you round them off. There's a pretty decent tutorial of it on UA-cam, they use fixed measurements though

  • @ElwingofRivendell
    @ElwingofRivendell 6 років тому +2

    Love you Momo ❤️ the notches help with a couple things. On patterns, notches are sometimes used to keep track of where pieces will be sewn together. Along curves, notches help cut down on bulk so fabric lays flatter. Also, what you called stay stitching is actually top stitching.

    For contacts, make sure you know what curvature you need. Eyeballs come in many different shapes, buying a pair that doesn't fit you can cause air to get caught underneath leading to general discomfort and... eye infections or other potentially blinding issues :D speaking from experience. Don't just walk in and buy them like I did :( Also even on the same person, the two eyes can be different.

    Hot tip, use derma-wax to make a neat transition from latex-ear to skin instead of liquid latex since you can get like chemical burns by applying it directly to the skin, I'm pretty sure. If you really want to use latex, (i get you) - make sure it is cosmetic latex, yes there's a difference.

    I find that it's easier to put them in leaning forward, dipping your chin down to your chest (preferably you want to be in front of a mirror), contact on your index or middle and the finger after pulling your lower lid down, your other hand will be pulling your upper lid up and you will want to put them on while looking ahead. I tried the leaning back method and could never get them in.

    I absolutely love the look of cloaks.
    Only problem is, i live somewhere that almost never gets cold enough to warrant the use of one.

    I made a flower crown the exact same way for a costume a few months ago, except instead of wire i used a "fall" wreath, which was really just some dried twigs in a circle.

    Okay, while I think being a cosplayer or whatever it's called is wicked cool, and would be TONS of fun, I am definitely not that. BUT! I HAVE HALOWEEN!! This costume would be literally perfect because I have time to make the cloak, am able to style the outfit my own way, it can show my more fun, feminine side, and the cloak will keep me warm and dry while we trudge around in October weather! Mo Mo thank you so much, I am going to have a wonderful time with this.
