- Ever since I moved my MLA-30+ to the new studio, I've been wanting an antenna to replace it here in the house. This one is pricy, but it's better built and has a lower noise floor when compared to the MLA-30.

I made a loop aerial of my own for LW and MW. Made out of old floor boards, a broom handle and a metal tube set in a block of wood to support the broom handle. U was able to receive MW stations that were supposed to be out of range in Derby. Radio Wales was received without background hiss.
Glad to hear that you were able to get some reception with your homemade antenna
I have a MLA-30+ indoors but i needed an outside antenna a bit sturdier to withstand the Wisconsin winters so I purchased a WV-601 for $189 and received it about a month ago. I installed it atop a 20 foot mast. So far I am VERY pleased. It is a low noise antenna and impressively sensitive. DX-ing is greatly improved on both Shortwave and SSB . It matches up well with my ICOM R75 and other portables such as the Tecsun 990X. I should also like to mention that while i did not obtain the antenna for MW listening the WV-601 is a stunning performer on the 540-1710 khz band as well. I'm looking forward to connecting the loop to my Whistler scanner and checking out UHF frequencies. For $189 it is a highly recommended bargain.
I haven't tried AM skip (MW) yet. Maybe tonight I'll give it a try!
Off topic as I always am. Iowa boosts two 1A 50,000 watt clear channel radio stations. One being 1040 WHO which can be heard all over. The other being KXEL 1540 KHz that boost two 275 foot towers at Dysart, Iowa. I always joke 500 watts at most. Coming home at 2 in the morning I could pick it up from 80 miles to the south.(preacher trying to save my soul) Driving back roads. I drove past the transmitter sight to see 1 tower was completely dark and the other had the bottom 2 beacon lights working, but the top beacon was missing. One would think after the Houston helicopter colliding with a 900 foot tower and winter coming. Stations owners would be checking tower lights.
That a great loop antenna. They great for low noise ! Some times with them you can tune out noise by Turning them. Nice radio ! I miss Radio Shack ! They had great stuff ! I have the DX 440 one. WBCQ has a 250 KW transmitter they get out ! one of WMRI transmitters is 250 KW as well. Big tubes . Water cooled ones. Getting great recepting ! That could be fun at night for AM Dxing . I have tuned AM broadest 100's miles away . Even outher countries.
I want to play with AM DX this weekend. I fall asleep to distant stations nearly every night so It will be interesting to see what I can pick up.
Loop antennas are the way to go. This one looks amazing, I've an MLA 30 on my ATS25X1 and I swear I have 3 times the stations all over the band. Been watching your vids long enough to know if you can actually get more than one MW station... that's really something! Love that receiver. Great vid.
Thanks- A good antenna can really make a difference
Although I prefer outdoor long wire antennas up as high as I can get them, this is a solid solution for anyone with space constraints. Even if someone uses wires outside like myself, I might recommend setting up one of these small loops in an attic for a backup solution. Snow, ice, wind storms, etc. can take down outdoor antennas when you want/need them. An antenna like this can receive communications when you may need it most, and the outdoor antennas are down. With the wide frequency range of this antenna, pairing it with an inexpensive SDR receiver can also provide hours of entertainment.
Good points, I am thinking of adding a pole to the post to raise it up at some point.
thats a great short wave radio . usb/lsb. I miss Radio Shack.
You are not the only one May the shack rest in heaven
I think we all miss Radio Shack-
Unicommer own them now, they are making inroads back to the US with 37 retailers, and 70 other countries worldwide, and of course, they remain online too.
I miss it for sure
Radioshack was neutered by modern age agendas keeping everyone on their cellphones and not playing with circuitry and radios.
I have a mag loop antenna and it's directional for sure. Mine isn't rugged enough to leave it out in weather so I just set it up on the table when I use it. This one looks nice.
I might have to do a follow up after winter to let people know how it held up
Erik, that antenna certainly has some potential for everyday and emergency communications. And, as you noted, a very quiet noise floor that beats the little loop I have :)
I agree
That's a cool receive antenna with some ears. 3.6-3.99 MHz LSB is the 80 meter ham band. 10.1-10.15 MHz is the 30 meter ham band - 30 meters is for data & morse code only. The real test would be seeing how the antenna handles 27.385 MHz LSB (CB channel 38).
I haven't tried to pick up CB yet. Maybe I'll play with it this weekend to see how it preforms.
Fantastic I tell you that right now
Thanks
Thank you for this fine review! I do have the Deshibo GA800, but that's mainly an indoor antenna. The 26cm circle can be used outside, but it needs to be kept from rain. The GA800 is an active antenna. It works fine on the lower frequencies when powered (active), but my experience on the higher frequencies (where, according to Deshibo, it's designed to be used passively) is not good... So I was very interested in your video. Though it's a passive antenna, it'll work better, since it's an outside antenna... If you buy it rightly (depends on the shop), you can get it for about 70 Euro (about 80 USD) here in Belgium. Though the screen of your radio was not readable very well (for us the viewers), I saw a lot of good reception. I would like to hear the difference with the MLA30+...
Sorry about the screen of the DX394. I can't remember what I did last time to make it show up better on camera.
@FarpointFarms thank you for your answer. I think that it's best to set the light strength in your receiver as low as possible, if possible , to avoid the camera lens from blurring. Maybe you can just test it for yourself before you make any new videos. Good luck 🤞
Thanks for the review. I'm still working on finishing my commo preps.
Do what you can do, every little bit helps
Shortwave radios are something I know little to nothing about. Not sure what I would do with one? Perhaps I need to check into them and find out their value a little better. I did enjoy the video,, and I learned a little something. Thank you Eric. May you have a very Happy Thanksgiving.
You have a good Thanksgiving as well, SW radio does have its purpose
@FarpointFarms yes they do I'm finding that out. I've been watching some videos on them. I just might buy one.
Loved radio shack too..in canada they were replaced with the source...slowly the little project stuff was being dropped pretty well sucks now ..that a nice short wave radio
I hear you, it is tough to find good components sometimes. I really miss Radio Shack
I am glad you did a video on this. I was looking at these , I have a dx 302 and a dx 394 also. I really like realistic products, I like to see how many am radio stations I can pick up late at night always looking for better antennas to do that. How would you say it compares to the mla 30+? If you raise up into the air some more would you do another video showing how it does? I am envious of you moving out on a farm, I would have liked to have done that 30 years ago but I am to old now, do not like in town living but at least I do have a nice size garden that I really enjoy. Love watching you'r videos thanks for doing them
I think this has a lower noise floor than the MLA-30, but both are great picks.
I thought you lived out in the stick factory? The sticks are more civilized, lol . Nice antenna! I’m sure with a little more elevation it will be outstanding.
Maybe I can add a pole on the post to get more height.
@@FarpointFarms I have several laying around, 8 ‘ plus , you’re welcome to one or two, they’re galvanized
I was gonna pick up an MLA today! Would you say this is better?
Both are good, but if you are on a budget, then look at the MLA30
Mount it horizontally and it will receive well in all directions. BTW, I own the same receiver and it needs refurbishing. Any good leads?
I am not sure, sorry.
Thank you, Erik, for this great video! As a side question, do you have an advice for a Radio Shack DX-394 replacement, now in 2024? Maybe a scanner of some kind? Being older stuff, Radio Shack is not easy to find (second hand) outside USA... Thank you!
The only one that I can think of would be the Eton 750, but it is not cheap
@@FarpointFarms I already own a Sony ICF-7600GR and considering a Sangean AT-909 X2 , but I think more advanced options exist...
So I bought a retektes shortwave. I’m wondering if this would work well. I want a passive listening shortwave option for emergency situations
I have ham and gmrs license as well.
Certainly! This really ups the reception of nearly all radios.
Think a lot more testing needs to be done before reaching conclusion that's reached here -- need to see the antenna working with other receivers. While the 394 is OK, it's certainly not up there in performance with others. Look forward to seeing another test showing use with SDR or better receivers...
If I can get time, that is the plan.
Reception sounds good, I only wish I could see what band you were listening to. You can’t make out what the display on the receiver says.
Sorry, I try to have it in focus but some times it is hard to see if it is in focus when filming
You tuned in Elder Jacob O. Meyer broadcasting Yahweh and Yahshua and the Assemblies of Yahweh broadcast ❤ 8:20
Cool thanks for letting me know
That’s a boomer for me 😊
How is it powered ? or is it strictly a passive loop ?
It is a passive loop.
@@FarpointFarms Lot of money for something that can be duplicated with a hula hoop and a piece of wire inside, I could see that money if it was a tunable magnetic loop with a coupling loop perhaps.
What is the black thing at the top?
Link to purchase????
It's in the description
Sounds like a tremendous static generator.
Not at all. In fact the noise floor is lower in this antenna than nearly any others I've tried.
Loop antenna have much lower noise floor. In very high mountains the soil conductivity is generally very low. This type antenna would work very well on AM along the coastal plain and the the great plains region .@@FarpointFarms
