For whomever it may help, I have a 2023 Polygon Colossus n8e. I upgraded it myself to auto shift and free shift. Cost me about $1500. Ideally, could have been abou $750. . My microspline hub will not work with the link glide cassette needed to do the conversion . So I built a custom rear wheel. An hg hub is what works with the link glide cassette. Anyway, when the mechanicals were complete, I went to a Shimano dealer and had them call Shimano on my behalf. Shimano went into the software of the e8 motor and enabled auto shift. Thats badically what it takes.
I will NEVER buy any bike component other than Shimano - I have Avid Elixir brakes that are not that old having to be bled constantly. The shops couldn't fix them (three tries at two different shops). Each shop says that Avid doesn't provide support once a new component is released. So I purchased Shimano XT disc brakes and installed them myself in less than 2 hours and they work FLAWLESSLY. Shimano is the KING of components.
Nice video Steve, who &/or how do you 'adjust' the Auto systems, & ABS! Is there any new ABS coming through? Soon we'll be riding Auto forward systems into braking with ABS followed by steering stabilized & electronic dampered corners. Funny how my 2018 (23,842 km) IceBlue Levo looks so much like that Nukeproof..
I’m wondering, is it possible to get the free shift or auto shift on an acoustic bike with these drive trains but without an e-bike motor. If not today is there anything stopping it from working in the future. Seems like they could make it work with an add on microcontroler. Or is a motor mechanically necessary to enable a freeshift/auto-shift?
They use the motor to change gear, so it’s not possible to use it on a normal MTB! The motor spins the chain ring and the derailleur changes gear while the cranks are stationary.
For my case i have a canyon spectral on With the shimano Di2 a buy all the component online and mount on my bike , need to buy shimano box to connect on my computer , and use not official software to active di2 on motor , all the thing cost me 800 euro in total with all the thing / my ,dtswiss wheel adaptator for shimano casette . but its nice and work very good / i use manual mod with autofreeshif ( to only autoshift when i descent ... very very good , i can brake , i am every time on good shift
Ok, great discussion, but i just recently purchased the Giant trance ebike. What's the situation regarding upgrading With both stable companies having this out in the market??
Zero chance, either option only works with either shimano motor or the SRAM motor. It’s getting worse in my opinion since it’s so inclusive to the motors .
@50whatnomadtravelnursemtb5 agreed with the bike market in turmoil in terms of sales. You are restricted from purchasing ebikes with those motors, yet on an analog bike, both components are compatible sram cassettes with shimano brakes. It's ridiculous

The biggest difference between the systems, as I've heard, is that Autoshift doesn't work under full load with Shimano, but it does with SRAM. With Shimano, only Freeshift works under full load.
Freeshift is shifting with no load without peddling. Autoshift has specifically been designed to be used in conjunction with linkglide to shift automatically under full load.
Sorry guys, but I got the answer from Shimano. Auto Shift only works under load with 11-speed cassettes, not with 12-speed cassettes because the transmission forces would be too high.
I have shimano motor on my both ebike and dont seems to like it anymore. Shimano is hard on customer support and finding parts on amazon. 2024 yeti has ep801, but use sram transmision😂. Is pretty bad when yeti shimano team wont use di2 on their ebikes
@macrogers good for you man! Like I say it makes it easier for people to ride the bikes with bigger wheels. Not a fan of 29 myself, think 27.5 is perfect and keeps me intouch with the ground yet not to complacent to just roll over everything. I watched my friend ride up a rocky hill on his 29 ebike, I struggled with my 27 had a couple of points where I bump stopped and that keeps it real for me, sa,e on the decent the 29 rolls over things too easy, I want the challenge, I want to put my skills to use... not ready to die yet 😉. To put it another way the bike industry recognised a bigger market in 29'ers as it made mtb easier! So that's why they have done so well.
@@Scott-wz4sc so true about just rolling over everything 😁. There are a lot of days that I know for sure im just barreling down. I have never ridden a 27.5 so I have no “useful” opinion on it. Although I think when bike manufacturers make SL bikes it should have 27.5 for weight savings.
So you ride a single speed hardtail with rim brakes then? Or are you happy to make use of the larger wheels, better brakes, suspension, modern geometry and gears when it suits you? In 10 years time you’ll probably be happily riding one of these bikes around and complaining in some way about the next development in biking.
Just change the gears yourself, this new technology just brings out more laziness and more stuff that can go wrong. What’s next self driving bikes? Common
