  • Understanding phase and the relationship of the phase between two layers drums is key to producing a much punchier sounding tracks. In this example I use a kick to show you how this can create a much punchier and tighter sound, but this can also be applied to other drum channels.

Great video! Would love your tutorial to continue on how to best merge those two layers together (or how to know when two layers work well together?). I'm getting okay results trying to layer synthetic kicks with a breaks but i'm not sure if i'm tweaking the right things or making it worse.
Love the short format you seem to be doing very to the point, much appreciated.

I can do a more specific tutorial on layering kicks maybe, although I cover something like that in my video about building a rolling drum: ua-cam.com/video/jGyBkcpDGR0/v-deo.html
Yeah, short seems to work, people's attention span is generally quite short online so I try and take that in mind. With this video, I really wanted to just show that this shouldn't be overlooked when making a big kick drum as it's fundamental to making a bigger sound.

Bro, stop your screen jumping that's not helpful to view. You could move the side tab, and use a resampling loop so we can see the visual changes.
But good Voxengo tip.. power is key.

Nobody layers drums in the low frequencies anymore, that's an old technique used over 10 years ago. Even Noisia recently joked that it's ridiculous to do that nowadays (as mentioned in their production section in Patreon). If you need a thicker kick, find a better kick and don't polish try to polish turd. Do however layer your drums with high frequency textures like hats or white noise.

I layer my drums in the low frequencies, but I make tracks for basement rooms instead of festivals. It's the whole reason I set up a channel, to give producers insights in this style of production.

@@prtclmusic Same, a 909 sits nicely just above the sub at around 100hz

@@174trek A good 909 or 808 can help give clarity to a heavier kick layer. The same also for snares.

Barely any difference. Slightly beefier in low end but the example wasn't the best for demonstration. Sure not worth going to the effort to do this for that much difference

I find it can help bring out the punch of the kick. It can mean the difference between a flat kick and one which stands out on a system...But nobody's forcing you to use the technique.
