  • In the Rapid Method, we focus on the physical mouth position of the vowels. There are only 8 (maybe 8½) vowel sounds altogether. Once you've mastered these - and it's exactly like developing a muscle memory for the physical positions of each note in a trombone - you will be able to produce all the vowels clearly and accurately.
If you can't already read the vowels in Thai (the vowels have been simplified & condensed into no more than 10 vowel groups in the Rapid Method) then please learn these first. DO NOT think of the Thai vowels in terms of their English equivalents because most of the sounds don't exist in English!
(For example, the "e" in English can sound like "air" in "fair" or "e" in bred or "er" in "her". Even the "u" in "cup" is often pronounced like "oo" in "book" and never like the ะ vowel in Thai! It becomes very confusing and wrong. The closest equivalent to the ะ sound in Thai is like the ITALIAN "a" in "pizza", not the English pronunciation of "pizza". Be warned...)
In Thai, unlike English, it is absolutely essential to pronounce the vowel sounds accurately in order to be understood.
Thankfully, the vowel sounds in Thai are very consistent, they do not change depending on your region, as in English. There are some slight variations in Thailand, depending on the regional dialect... but if you pronounce the vowels the ‘standard’ (middle-country) way then you will be universally understood.
Once you can read Thai, practice these vowel shapes and sounds until they become second nature. To learn to read Thai (and thereby pronounce Thai clearly and accurately) please visit www.rapidlearnthai.com.
