Update 18.08 has made engineering a lot easier, the materials are easier to fill up on now, I maxed pharmaceutical isolators no problem, all from one source!
How to farm manufactured materials, the most efficient method if you relog.

Core dynamics & proprietary composites - Federation, high population (billions), state nil/election. Try LP413-18
Military Grade Alloys - Any system, high population, state war/civil war.
Imperial Shielding - Empire, high pop, state none/election.
Proto Heat Radiators - Independent, high pop, state boom.
Pharmaceutical Isolators - Any system (Alliance/independent?), any population, state outbreak (many in outbreak, none in any other state ie war?)
Improvised Components - Independent, any population, state civil unrest.
Proto Light Alloys and Proto Radiolic Alloys - Independent or Alliance, high population, state boom. Sources drop a mix of the two materials.

@@neilallso400 you need them for dirty drive thrusters G5, which is the best thruster engineering for most ships, you can also down trade them for lower materials.
