Yeh look Poch is a good appointment for the US but international coaching doesn't afford much room for development by the actual coach. He is certainly far above what they have had recently though.
To say "Pochettino wasn't the first choice" is ridiculous. We would never have thought he was even an option. We could never have hoped for a better option. I was upset we missed Marsch to Canada and to get an even better option is amazing. To call Klopp our first choice is just stupid. He would never take the USMNT job. He's practically retired, why on earth would he take the USMNT job? I say this as an American Liverpool fan.
The US public embraces the USWNT more than the USMNT because they have a history of winning things (19 trophies since 1991). They can get behind that. The realisation that the all conquering US isn't even dominant in North/Central America at football, let alone the whole Americas or globally probably has significant cognitive dissonance for prospective US fans.
The USWNT has top players due to the history of bans on women's football elsewhere and legal protections in the US and the culture that developed as a result. The USMNT has yet to have any top players, we are only talking about this team because of the US' overall cultural cache, but when it comes to (men's) football they are 150 years behind the major footballing nations. The expectations should be really low for their team based on the infrastructure and players available... ask again in a century! They lost to Panama at the Copa America, went out in the group stage, so better to discuss the Panamanian national team (Poch has taken this job for the pay packet but it's not a high prestige job, it's similar to managing an MLS, Chinese Super League or Saudi league team)...
The US women's team has benefited from the huge investment in women's sports in the US since the 1970s. Something that most other countries weren't doing until the last 15 years or so.
It's a thankless job, Poch is gonna quit in frustration inside of two years and it'll have nothing to do with anything on the pitch. The culture at the USSF is beyond toxic and the nature of how the grassroots game in the US is essentially a financial scheme that keeps kids from underprivileged backgrounds out and fills teams with nepo babies from suburbs who can afford the extortionate fees to play and get coached. Until any of that changes, US Soccer will always be a punchline.
What drives the US soccer fans crazy is the fact that on the men's side, they are an average and will never be a top 10 team. And when I hear, some pundits, stating that the US could win the WC in 2026. Really?
I've been told I'm wrong, but I believe the best US athletes are not playing soccer. Can you imagine if nfl defense/offensive backs, nba guards came up playing soccer?
An American here 12:57 being honest we Americans all we care about is winning that’s why the most popular teams here are large college football ones being Alabama etc etc because Americans no longer care about being loveable under dogs we expect to win in everything (American exceptionalism and all) so if your not the best your irrelevant that’s why I think the men’s team doesn’t get the same support is because we haven’t won if we win then yk that might change but I can recall when Tim Howard had that amazing game against Belgium and I thought that the US would be in for a watershed moment and if we won it could have but we lost (and deserved to lose) and I have realized since then until we make a World Cup final then soccer won’t be a cultural mainstay
It also didn’t help that when we made a run to the quarterfinals in 2002, the games were in the middle of the night here, so only diehards would watch. We really need to have a nice, respectable performance and pull off at least one upset in 2026 for the sport to really take hold here. And they need to play in a fast-paced, entertaining manner and actually score goals. Let’s hope Poch can execute his vision.
The USA 🇺🇸 fan base didn't accept Berhalter because the team never beat expectations during his tenure and produced boring, predictable, dismal performances many times. He became indefensible after crashing out of the Copa America.
Saying the US can’t beat bigger teams like England is a horrendous take. Name a World Cup that England has won a game against the US I’ll wait… Croatia being labeled as a team to make it out group stages is mind boggling considering they did just got to a WC semi and a WC final the last 8 years just shows how bias you are to a England team that always chokes or has some excuse why they can’t live up to their players potential.
Croatia were knocked out in the group stages in the last Euros, while England made it to the final. Seems pretty reasonable given how the teams have performed recently
Croatia has an aging team, they are relying on players past their prime. All this English bias is absolute nonesense. In Spain, they are biased towards their own country. Its the same in Italy, France, Brazil, Argentina and so on. Get over it already!
@@dawnmancaloriankeebals4262 you’re also naming teams who have titles to back it up, and not teams with half a billion dollars on the field losing in finals. Against a team who went through the trenches the on their side of the bracket.

He's clearly a very good coach so in that sense not over rated but agreed he isn't a top tier coach..or at least hasn't provided evidence of such. He does seem to get linked with lots of big teams but I feel he would be great at a Newcastle level club. Sounds like a win win for US team really.
Every time I see USMNT my brain goes US Mutant Ninja Turtles and I bet I'm not the only one.
Real
Heroes in a half shell
We deserve Mbappe
United States Men's Ninja Turtles has a pretty nice ring to it.
Teenage Mutant National Team is pretty cool too lol
Yes as an American been thinking this since I was a kid
Poch is going to improve so many of our young players. Something GB wasn't often able to do
He’s not though.
This isn’t a club team

You and I can do a better job than Berhalter was doing. Getting him out and being ambitious was unexpected by me
The Athletic not paying well Ayo got his coat on...Put the heating on..
If he does the job he did at Spurs they'll improve markedly. If it's PSG or Chelsea, not so much.
would love to see Poch study/meet with Hayes and Slot to learn how they made such immediate impacts with their respective teams

Guys… it’s Pellegrino Matarazzo
Depends on if the players have the right mindset when playing for the national team but tactically he should be better than GGG no question
To hear an Englishman call football soccer pains me. And I'm American.
They use "soccer" all the time. "Soccer Saturdays." Sky was running "Soccer Specials," all during the last week of the transfer window.

He'll be an expensive disaster, as he has been with recent clubs.
Adam Crafton is so out of it. Klopp and Guardiola would never coach the men's US team.
