I love that once or twice a year this song pops up in my feed. I'll watch it a couple dozen times, learn to play it on guitar, and then a few weeks later, I'll forget about it and then a while later, it pops up on my feed, I grab my guitar, rinse and repeat...

Gary Louris has a predilection for beautiful melancholia, exorcising his angst through reflective, self analytical lyrics, invariably offset by subtle and infectious melodies.
I have always been predisposed to revel and delight in this particular form of expression of the Human psyche.
Originally, The Jayhawks were heralded as champions and purveyors of a style of country rock originated by Gram Parsons, and whilst Mark Olsen dominated the sound and lyrical content of the bands output, the similarities were undeniable.
With the departure of Mark Olsen, the general consensus amongst critics and fans alike, was that the Captain had scuttled the ship whilst riding a creative wave. Mercifully for those hungry for, and appreciative of intelligent music, Gary Louris declined to abandon the good ship 'The Jayhawks', and accompanied by his talented and stalwart crew, salvaged and refitted the vessel, setting sail for challenging and uncharted waters.
Sound of Lies, the initial port of call, was a stunning achievement, a fully fledged resurrection, and pointed to a very different influence, in that the dark mood and lyrical content was redolent of another pathfinder of country rock - perhaps the true originator - Gene Clark. I would recommend anyone who has treasured and enjoyed The Jayhawks output post Olsen, to investigate the wonderful Gene Clark anthology, Flying High. My only surprise is that neither Gary nor The Jayhawks have contemplated or been persuaded to cover such classic Gene Clark songs as, She Darked The Sun, Set You Free This Time, Something's Wrong, One In A Hundred, Polly, or Past Addresses.

Honestly, one of my favorite live recordings of the Jayhawks. I've watched so many, and the quality here is insane: there's no keys, they're literally under a tree in a field, but Karen's vocals sound amazing, they're incredibly tight, and the recording is great!

Could not agree more. Karen is that vital ingredient in the recipe that without her contribution, would render the dish decidedly bland.
P.S. Correction. They were never bland. Olsen's and Louris's vocals were a breath of fresh air in the arid late 80s and early 90s - but Karen's harmonies subtly propelled the Jay Hawks to another Realm.

this is talent there are songs that try to make you feel something, there are songs you just dont get for whatever reason, usually the music overwhelms the message, and then there is this,, a song you feel deeply. to try to intellectalize it, does not do it justice. it just has something that hits the heart, and its beautiful. this and hearing Blue in a supermarket in Baltimore
