Chinese Electric Vehicles and the Looming EU-China Trade Conflict

This episode, the panel assesses the European Commission’s June 12 announcement of countervailing tariff rates on electric vehicles (EVs) from China. Unless an agreement is found, the Commission is threatening to impose import duties of up to 38 percent on the products of Chinese EV companies. The decision has been met with fierce criticism from Beijing, but skeptical voices are also coming from Germany whose automotive sector would be more affected than the industries of other countries, for example France. Together with our experts, we examine the implications of the Commission’s decision and discuss likely scenarios for the looming EU-China trade conflict as a new European leadership is forming.
