when i hear this, it makes me realise the epicness of this song, sonic has finally reached the end, fighting one last time, for good over evil, saving the world from one madman who wanted it all, no rings, no tails, no hope, and after a long battle, victory!
That final level is the biggest difficulty spike I have ever seen in a game. Two tough bosses back to back with no room for error. I burned over a hundred lives on it and questioned whether I even could beat it, but that just made the final victory all the sweeter.
Tge trick is to learn Silver Sonic's pattern. Once you do, he's easy to figure out. The problem with Robotnik is the massive damage box, and the height of his hit box. He's actually VERY easy to dog Dge as far as his moveset go, and unlike Silver Sonic, his pattern of far more predictable.
As much as I love Sonic on Genesis, my personal most iconic final boss theme of the 16-Bit era is Dancing mad, from Final Fantasy VI, and if we stick to platformer, I'll still take Crocodile Cacophony from Donkey Kong Country 2 over this. That said, Sonic 2 and 3&K probably have the two best final bosse themes on the Genesis/Megadrive
It is kinda cruel considering that 1 ring grants you near invincibility. Although the boss fight was very atmospheric to me the boss fight was a lesson that we shouldn't always rely on rings to keep us safe.
As someone who's played the classic sonic games I feel like this fits the situation the best. You have no rings, you're alone, you most likely died a few times against silver sonic and you hear those alarms going off as the huge ass mech comes out as a final stand. The drums in this also give the illusion of a marching band, eggman literally marches toward you without care as you have to either find a small opening or wait it out. The music itself gives a sense of dread but urgency, something that the final boss music of Sonic 3 would do in the urgency but fail at the sense of dread instead feeling more like a final showdown. Here the final showdown isn't you racing against the clock, it's you trying to take down and defeat a crazy evil scientist in a mech. All of this while you're in space. This is the only other Sonic game, besides Adventure 2, where you fight the final boss in space. Even Metal Sonic in Sonic Heroes was just in the upper atmosphere, not in space.

In my opinion 0:04-0:24 these 2 start up sounds are the best part of the whole track also imo this final boss theme beats both the sonic 1 and sonic 3 boss themes
You gotta understand..... back in 1996 this was the hardest boss to beat. Shit was impossible. Its easy now, but back in the day we needed cheat codes.
I once massively glitched up the final boss, went into debug mode and somehow planted to Giant Mech's into Silver Sonic's Area, it was so funny then eventually crashed. :P
And what makes this theme even better is the final zone having absolutely no rings and no Tails. You either win it all or lose everything. Hopefully you have enough lives by this point.

This has to be the most annoying boss in all of classic sonic. If it wasn't for the lack of rings, this would be as easy as the other bosses in the game. But if you make just one mistake, you have to restart the whole level. This means the beat strategy is to hit it when it lands, then run to the other side of the room and wait for him to jump again. So essentially, the best way to beat this boss is just 2 minutes of waiting.

The most iconic boss theme of the 16-Bit era....
As much as I love Sonic on Genesis, my personal most iconic final boss theme of the 16-Bit era is Dancing mad, from Final Fantasy VI, and if we stick to platformer, I'll still take Crocodile Cacophony from Donkey Kong Country 2 over this.

Beating sonic 2 death egg is pain for noobs, i really recommend to use debug mode if its hard,
and in Sonic & Knuckles.... you get to KEEP the rings that you had BEFORE you went to fight the final fight
