CONTEXT:
Ryuk has offered to give Light the "Shinigami Eyes" in exchange for half of his remaining lifespan, so he can see L's name if they ever meet. Light turns this down, and instead begins to change the schedule of when he kills people. This, as Light predicts, causes L to realise that someone connected to the investigation team is Kira, to which L creates his own investigation team. Light hopes that the Police will realise and try to expose L, so Light can learn his name and kill him.
