  • On April 10th at 11:00AM, the University of Virginia dedicated the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers. It ensures that the hidden lives of enslaved laborers will now be publicly remembered for their importance to the University.
Hear from the many people who strived to create the monument that honors the lives of those who built and sustained the University from 1817-1865 and who's work had been hidden or forgotten over many years.

This moved me to tears. Several of my ancestors were enslaved by UVA and their names are inscribed on the walls. For the 39 years I've done genealogy, I've endeavored to keep their memories alive. Finally, their names are publicly remembered! Thank you UVA!

I was moved on so many levels and I look forward to visiting the site as soon as possible. What a legacy of courage carved out by the enslaved laborers. Their lives, a living contribution. May we never forget, never rationalize and never repeat. I am grateful to them and glad that UVa took a courageous stance to start the conversation in a dramatic fashion. This was hard to watch, but on many levels, necessary to see.

"If you find It in your heart to care for somebody else, you will have succeeded." - Dr. Maya Angelou. Amazingly wonderful. Thank you, University of Virginia, for this success. Blessings and continued courage for all those involved in this presentation and the journey of healing and education. Dr. Deborah Stroman '82
