You cannot imagine how revolutionary this was after all the tired little programmes with three or four different pieces of music cobbled together with sedate little routines. I still love them. They have never been bettered.

Agreed. Watching this again after 38 years I see that, unlike Barnum & Bolero, they changed almost nothing from the initial performance. It really couldn't be bettered.

It's amazing they didn't change one bit from this first performance to their last. Perfection! No need to change perfection! My favorite skating couple!

Torvill and Dean will never ever be bettered. They took ice dance to new heights which have never been reached by any other skaters. Brilliant, I have been lucky enough to see them twice and both times were magical, especially the Balero. Thank you very much for these video clips.

You just know how good they were by the audience. They affected the audiences more than any ice dancing or single ice dancer I have ever seen. The crowds clap along in time to the music, applaud before the end and stand and cheer for ages after they have left the ice. That really does say it all.

I know exactly what you mean, Craig; I was one of the people IN that audience; we had truly never seen anything like that before - one whole coherent piece of music that conveyed character and emotion as well as skill.

I keep coming back to this wonderful clip, as a first outing for a routine, it is perfect in every way and remains so. Also what is incredible is that the Richmond ice rink was such a small rink. For them to fit every move into a much smaller space, is also amazing. Thank you so much for uploading this!

Unreal for a first performance. It never gets old. So perfect. And I didn't realize until this clip how fast Mack and Mabel is. WOW! Show us more old clips like this. I love seeing the first performances and how routines evolved.

This makes me shiver! They come from Nottingham my home city! And I used to talk to Jayne Torvill when she worked at the Norwich Union Office in Nottingham and I was in an Insurance Brokers Office. They are such nice people too! She used to send memos to me about Insurance. This is the best thing I have ever seen English sportspeople do!!!

When I saw T&D's performance at the 1984 Olympics I paid $85.00 for the "ABC Sports presents Best Of the 1984 Olympics" VHS tape" just for T&D and I didn't even own a VCR yet! Christmas 84 my husb gave me a JVC/VCR. It cost him over $500 and it wore out almost 20yrs later! Back to T&D, I taped a show from PBS about them called "Path to Perfection." Their unison is still spot on and they are truly the best that ever was. I am fr Canada glad to see Ice Dance isn't dominated by Russions now.

Not quite sure what you mean here. T&D used a bowler in one of their show routines, but that was after they turned professional, not Mack & Mabel. Karen Barber & Nicky Slater did a Chaplin routine the same year T&D did Bolero and they used a bowler in the exhibition version of that programme that they did for galas, but I never saw T&D use one in their amateur days.

  • @denisej4813

The only thing that betters this (possibly) is the exhibition dance that they did to "I won't send roses" (the song from Mack and Mabel whose music forms the third section of this freedance.) They incorporated a lot of the moves from the freedance in to that exhibition routine, which they skated at the galas in Sarajevo and Ottawa in 1984 after winning gold in the Olympics and their final World Championship, and then at a couple of galas on their triumphant return home . I shall never forget seeing it for the first time, on TV at the Sarajevo Olympics Gala, it's an incredibly emotional watch. I remember their coach, Betty Calloway, saying that it was her favourite routine of theirs, she loved it even more that any of their wonderful freedances and Original Set Pattern (short programme) dances.
