Urban Exploration | Why We Do It
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- Today I want to talk about the whole urban exploration scene. Why we do it, the main types of urbex, like rooftopping, and how dangerous they are. I’ll assign a score to each type of urbex and by the end we should know what the most extreme form of urban exploration is.

For those of you fresh to the concept, I’ll bust out the dictionary term. Urban exploration is the exploration of manmade structures, usually abandoned ruins or hidden components of the manmade environment.
Why do people do it? I can’t speak for all urban explorers, but here are my three big reasons:
First, the connection with the past. A lot of these places are completely stuck in time, left as they were the last day they were open or in operation. Since a lot of them are historically significant - it’s like a natural museum.
Second, morbid curiosity. I’ve always wondered ‘what’s gonna happen when we’re all gone?’ And this is a way to see that. It’s surprising how quickly nature takes over these places. A couple decades is all it takes for complete decay to happen. For example, This airforce station visited closed in 1994 and it now looks like something out of the walking dead - every family that lived here has moved on, and it’s been largely forgotten.
Third, historic preservation and awareness. You got different types of abandoned spots, you know a house on the side of the road, a gas station, a bunch of gum abandoned on a telephone pole. These are interesting, especially the gum, but they aren’t necessarily historically or culturally significant. A place like the abandoned Milk Can Creamery in Rhode Island fits the bill. So when I check it out and make a video about it, it’s to help raise awareness and let people know why it’s important.

I had to look away from the rooftoping stuff. But I’ve always liked the Urbex stuff. There’s an abandoned movie theatre in New Jersey. And built on top of it is a second movie theatre. That’s just plain interesting. Your channel is excellent, Jason. Keep it up.
I couldn't help but watch, but sitting here squirming, with sweaty palms lol

Great video as always! Abandoned Urbex is also my go-to, especially here in New England we have so many historically/ culturally significant abandoned locations to explore. Looking forward to more of future urbex videos from you!
Great video!! It was very interesting to watch, thanks!
I don’t care what the topic is, but your editing style and approach could make a video about the most boring topic, seem interesting. I don’t tend to watch every video an Urbex explorer I’m subscribed to posts. I usually just watch places that interests me or appeals to me, but if I see a new post from you, I know it’s going to be a good an interesting watch, even if the topic is one that generally may not appeal to me! Keep it up!
a note on following the law.. as a rule I obey "no trespassing" signs.. and I'm here to say, there are quite a few places that are wide open, hiding in plain sight, and totally awesome.. I'd love to see an episode on that mountain in VT that has some cool towers (purposely obscured location :) )
Jason, good stuff man. I just came across your channel due to a Facebook post. Love seeing you cover the RI historical landmarks, such as that lovely bridge stuck in vertical position RI'ders know all so well haha also, I had no idea about that Newport Mansion. Kudos for doing this! As a history nerd, when I was younger, I always wanted to do something like that. Somehow document how that happened, etc etc etc. Obviously UA-cam didn't exist back then, and obviously even when it did, I didn't take the initiative. Glad YOU did.
Anyway, again, great channel. Good luck with it - from a fellow Rhode Islander.
Great explanation, I didnt know half of these categories existed
This was interesting.
Awesome Jason!!! Your favorite is of course our favorite as well! Rooftopping….ahh hell no! Draining…we’ve been known to hit a couple. Caving…another one of our favorites and we’ve done this one a lot! As a matter of fact we’ve heard it MANY TIMES from train people that we shouldn’t be in active train tunnels! Duh! Lol Really enjoyed this!!! Hope you are doing well!!! 🙂👍
Cool video and a very exciting place. You inspire me to make videos aswell :). Stay safe ^^
Oh yeah I took take of my interest in rooftopping with a drone - I'm good on the ground. Keep up the exploring guys 😁
I think its also fair to add the very large possibility of breathing in uncirculated, dangerous air in the "danger" category. Always bring safety equipment! 😀
This guy doesn't even mention mills once. lame but im still giving you a thumbs up
Mills are the OG Abandoned Buildings.
I’ll tell you look at the analytics of people who do rooftopping channels like nightscape Usamallama and others notice how they have consistently good views, because they’re creating content that focuses about the person.
But the abandoned place channels views are so wonky they don’t give a single crap about the person only if you go to a cool place
Channels like big bankz and especially when I made content like that in the past it just didn’t work out
CF/Pawtucket. Depot train station is one we'd go in even as kids in the 80s. Before internet. ✊🏻
Love this, just got back onto urbex after a little hiatus, now I feel like I gotta move and see everything before it's too late. Videos are great btw !
Have you checked out Hanton City? Its a ghost town in Smithfield
You're painfully underrated. Loved the video, keep it up!
Red bull for jason! Hes good enough for sure
😡 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐦
shiey was the first channel i started watching. back when he was doiung bunkers
I always go back to his videos
links pls1!
Wow Jason, what a great video, I learned a lot! I love your specialty, abandoned buildings always fascinate me, especially the ones where it looks like everything was left and the doors locked…it is amazing what is left behind. Thanks, always look forward to your new videos.
As long as it is something that interests me and not just for the effect like "look at me here!", I dont care much for the classification or risk/danger. Rooftopping doesnt tingle me, though. There are a lot of dangerous sports I find much more interesting than watching dudes climb stuff and pose at the top. I'm just not wired that way.
