  • Expert parotid surgeon, Dr. Babak Larian, has created a comprehensive parotid surgery animation so that his patients can better understand the procedure. Learn more about parotid & facial nerve surgery at www.parotidsurgerymd.com/
A minimally invasive procedure pioneered by Dr. Larian, Micro-Parotidectomy is a revolutionary way to treat parotid tumors through the full or partial removal of the parotid gland. During the micro-parotidectomy procedure, or minimally invasive parotid surgery, Dr. Larian will remove the parotid tumor and a portion of the surrounding parotid gland through a very small and well-hidden incision near the ear - an approach that results in reduced pain, minimal scarring, and a quicker recovery. At the same time, Dr. Babak Azizzadeh, a leading facial nerve specialist and facial plastic surgeon, will monitor the facial nerve to ensure its safety and reduce the risk of surgical complications. Once the parotid tumor has been located and removed by Dr. Larian, Dr. Azizzadeh will then perform a reconstructive procedure to fill in the defect left behind by the removed portion of the gland. In addition to restoring symmetry to the face, this corrective procedure provides an added layer of protective tissue on top of the facial nerve, which helps prevent Frey's Syndrome. To achieve this, Dr. Azizzadeh will use muscle flaps, grafts, or a combination of these, dependent on the needs of each individual patient, to provide a positive aesthetic outcome and ensure the patient experiences minimal to no scarring. Micro-parotidectomy is commonly performed as an outpatient procedure; most patients do not require hospitalization and can return home the same day as surgery.
Is Micro-Parotidectomy right for you? Everyone should be evaluated by a team of parotid and facial nerve surgery experts. Your smile is very important and we want to make sure you get the best care possible! For more information, contact the CENTER for Advanced Parotid & Facial Nerve Surgery at 310-461-0300.

I'm happy to inform y'all that my daughter's surgery was a success. She's doing very well, smiling and happy it's over. She returned to work 3 days after her surgery. Though she doesn't have any sensation on her ear lobe, it's certainly better than the alternative. Her surgeon, Dr. Nasri removed a large tumor that had wrapped around her facial nerves and her incision was done on the side of her neck that measures approximately 1.5" and she didn't suffer any paralysis. 🙏
Thanks to all who were kind and answered my questions. #happymama #lasvegas 💖

My poor husband is in Need of intervention. I have been researching for weeks and reading about other patients who also developed Bell’s palsy post op.
Some had to have plastics come in for facial Paralysis…He has lost weight , it is difficult for him to speak or even eat. Because he drools . His blood pressure is up and he is exhausted and overwhelmed….

hello all. I was diagnosed with a Warthin tumor in early december 2019. After all tests (MRI, Biopsy etc...) it was clear / no cancer tumor. Today, february 19th im 8 days after the surgery, home recovering. Doc gave me 2 weeks to stay home and relax. im feeling great, eating well and sleeping good. Surgery was about 3-4 hours but expect to be done and out from the hospital in the evening. its a whole day basically. After the wake you up you go through two resting areas in the hospital where they monitor your breathing. i got to the hospital at 7am and was home the same day around 7pm. The only problem i have is the not feeling a part of your ear like everyone is saying. its a strange feeling, im only 8 days after the surgery so its still fresh. the doc said it could take up to a year for you to feel everything back normal or you may have permanent loss of feeling there. its a risk. please make sure you speak to your doc before the surgery so you understand it. any questions feel free to ask.

If someone on here has been here to get there surgery please get in touch with me! I have a parotid tumor and was kinda scared of the idea of traveling so far to get it done! I haven’t been far from home ! I was also wondering about the cost of travel and sleep accommodations! Is there any program to help pay for traveling? I also wonder if you except Medicine and Medicaid?

@Narayan Bhagwan you should get it checked and x-ray again. I've read so many stories where people got the stones removed successfully and emptied their salivary gland and ducts. Now some time later they later they mention felling like you, like if there is something still in there. So they go back to the Doctor and check it and end up finding out that there's more in there. The Doctor informed them not to worry because this is normal for salivary glands that were blocked up. Some way up the duct. So when the first ones were removed the others had a way to move up the duct toward the surface after the swelling went down

Hope you got on fine with the surgery if you've already had it. I had this back end of 2019. Left side of my face. The tumour (pleomorphic Adenoma) was the size of a pea under my left ear. Had the Parotidectamy. Had some facial paralysis for about 2-3 months which Doctor had told me to expect. That completely resolved itself. Numbness in the ear lasted a bit longer. I still have a little bit of numbness in the ear lobe but nothing to bother about. Good luck.

It's devastating when the facial nerve has to be removed due to the parotid gland being malignant and impacts the facial nerve, requiring complete removal of both nerve and gland. The patient was left with the appearances of having Bell's Palsy. It's legacy made eating difficult and drinking required a straw. For an elderly female patient, the consequence was to withdraw from society, always extremely self-conscious in public which interfered with both eating and drinking when outside her room. A big problem is not only carer staff but also advanced nursing staff working in a Stroke Unit, didn't recognise the difference and don't know the difference between a Stroke and Bell's Palsy. With Strokes staff encourage using the side of the body affected. It's pointless pushing a Bell's Palsy sufferer to exercise the facial muscles, even more so when not having a facial nerve. I suggest all staff should read a patient's medical history before making assumptions. Shaming a self conscious, elderly patient unfortunately can and did have long term issues with self esteem. I don't think nursing staff realise the psychological damage that can result from careless or unthinking staff actions.
