- This is a rare clip from the 97-minute UK cut of 'The Muppet Movie', shown only in British theatres in 1979 and once on VHS. This extended scene features additional lyrics not included in the US/international cut.

@OfficialOrangeGoof I love that too especially I thought after he said "go home" he should have said "have dinner" and then "read a book" and everything else in the order he said. I guess the few beers he drinks is his dinner.

I hope you have checked out the Jason Seigel "The Muppets", which I think is such a beautiful homage to this movie (I grew up watching this and the Great Muppet Caper). The first song Kermit sings, about his old friends and the feeling of loss because he isn't close to them anymore, it makes me cry every time. I'm usually in tears and then break into laughter right when Fozzie, in framed picture form, goes "I was framed!"

i'm listening after my first real heartbreak. here's hoping the pain goes away soon and that somethin' better comes along.
I didn't do it but I pictured myself writing my own version of the song with different lyrics in response to Scoob skipping theaters in favor of streaming. Luckily, a little over a year later, Cinemark locations did a makeup theatrical release and I got to go see it in Bellevue Washington and I wouldn't mind seeing it again if they do another theatrical release and I have the chance and if there's nothing else playing that I'm more interested in.

@@Peer_Review not really sure myself, but maybe it has something to do with how similar skunks and badgers look and upon approaching, they got a bad response ( yknow skunks spray when bothered )
A badger is a notoriously strong & determined animal, skunks have a super potent smell... A cross between the two would be strong both in smell and ferocity lol
Rowlf is such a great muppet. I was always so confused about why he suddenly stopped showing up, though now I know the reason why, it's still a shame that we barely got to see him during those years between Jim Henson's death and the 2011 Muppets movie.
Because they had a hard time finding a replacement. Fortunately, his career and prominence in The Muppets has rebounded!

However, I know that Richard Hunt voiced Scooter and Janice and after Richard Hunt passed away, Scooter and Janice were in other Muppet movies where they didn't talk. Plus, I know Richard Hunt voiced some muppets on Sesame Street like Forgetful Jones, Placido Flammingo, and Sully and after Richard Hunt passed away, some of those muppets were taken off Sesame Street and some were still on Sesame Street but didn't have lines on the show.

My family had the 8-track of The Muppet Movie soundtrack. Today is the first time in over 30 years I've heard this song, and I still knew all the lyrics! (And now they make sense and make me chuckle in a whole new way!)
My dad had the soundtrack on a record, but recorded it for me onto a tape. That's the reason I don't know why they didn't use the extended version in the final cut!

My oh my . Watching this as child when it came out it just another song I sang to with my friends and siblings. Fast forward to present I'm a divorced man in my 40s the dialogue and lyrics are more relevant than anything every before. So yes I hope that something better comes along!!!!
Such a good song. Definitely one of the most underrated muppets songs. Such a clear message and mature message to it.
Every line is a unquie, shining gem that can stand alone as brilliant. As some would believe, God must have needed Jim Henson more than we did but I still miss his touch.
Kermit and Rowlf was both voiced by the late, inspiring and without a doubt the greatest performer ever, Jim Henson.
Jim Henson was also the voice of Ernie from Sesame Street.
Jim had Rowlf perform In Baker 9 for 9 lights in 1969. Also starring Jim's son Brian in the same film.

@maggielovestoads Yes that's true and I wondered myself on how Jim Henson can perform both Kermit and Rowlf at the same time since he voices both of them. Now that I think about it, I think what is happening here is that Jim Henson is holding and performing one of them while his voice is recorded into a tape recorder for the other one. For example, maybe his voice is being recorded into a tape recorder for Rowlf while another performer (Frank Oz, Richard Hunt, Jerry Nelson, etc.) is holding onto Rowlf and moving him around and whenever Jim Henson's voice comes into the tape recorder for Rowlf, the performer (Frank Oz, Richard Hunt, Jerry Nelson, etc.) is moving Rowlf's body and his mouth while on the other hand, Kermit is being held and voiced by Jim Henson the whole time. Somehow I have a feeling about this because Jim Henson wouldn't be able to perform Kermit and Rowlf at the same time using two different voices from 1:42-1:45 and from 2:31-2:33 since there is some distance between Kermit and Rowlf. Plus, Jim Henson wouldn't be able to do two different voices at the same time from 3:15-3:24.
@@afriendofbean There are three voices right at the end: the harmonising notes of Rowlf and Kermit, plus Rowlf doing a bit of scat. I've always loved that. But yes, IIRC, that's exactly why there are so few scenes of Kermit and Rowlf together anywhere in the TV show. Because this was a movie and would have needed a load of ADR anyway, they realised they could do loads of interesting and fun things that wouldn't have been possible on TV. Kermit cycling, the swamp scene (with Muppeteers hiding underwater) and so on are all examples of just how ambitious and clever the Muppet Movie really is.
@@XKenny77 I could definitely picture it being hard for Jim Henson to perform and do two different voices at the same time for Kermit and Rowlf which I guess can hurt the throat. For example on Sesame Street there's a muppet named Harvey Kneeslapper who was a jokester on Sesame Street and he was performed by Frank Oz and Harvey had a very loud scream on the show but, he had to be taken off the show because his loud screaming was hurting Frank Oz's throat. I would assume it could do the same thing for Jim Henson while performing Kermit and Rowlf at the same time.
After decades of watching this movie, once I noticed that Rowlf is both harmonizing and beatboxing at the very end... I couldn't unhear it.

I've always thought Rolf was the "old soul" of all the Muppets too. Kind of like, if the Muppets had a "Rat Pack"(w/out the rats), Rolf would've been Frank.

Not sure why I love this song. My wife and I are getting along great (33 years and counting), before I met her I was a lot more problematic to women than they ever were to me, and I don't go to bars. I think the appeal to me is the quick camaraderie between Rowlf (yes, that's how it's spelled) and Kermit. Rowlf is comforting but doesn't feed the misery by being overly sympathetic. Kermit leaves with just a quick nod of respect -- they will get through this. I like that kind of friendship. Oh, and the song is catchy with clever lyrics and puns. RIP, Jim Henson. You left the world a better place than when you arrived.

I was about 6 years old when my father bought me this record. It was a .45 and I played this song until the record warped.
I've always liked the way at one level it's for kids but on the other hand there's stuff in their that there's no way kids will ever get - at the end Rowlf says "I've never seen someone that green have the blues that bad".
I'm confused.....I'm not that old, but I've known what the blues are since i was like three. Are you trying to suggest kids don't know what the blues are? I can assure you that is either incorrect or not their fault that their parents can't be bothered to introduce them to things.
Love this song, and the extended version is well deserved.

It's fascinating how much I loved these Muppet Movie songs hearing them as a kid seeing it in the theater, and loving them even more as an adult for different reasons. They really resonate across all ages, an amazing feat.

If you have someone nice and caring for you in your life, then the notion that nobody cares should not exist. Even if it seems hopeless that anyone could love you, not everyone is careless. There are people in the world that care for others, but unfortunately, if they're not around to be with you, then you can't help but feel reluctant and give up, as if it really is hopeless to ever see them again if they're never with you. No matter where I go or who I try to meet, nobody is around, and nobody cares. Between rejection that I faced in high school and college, and nobody feeling that I'm very important to them, I have nobody. Pretty soon, before I know it, I'll be too old to remember what it's like to be a kid, because I passed by and wasted my teenage years without a true friend. Being an adult is a sad reminder of regret that lets you know that you're too old to be appreciated by younger people anymore, because they only want to be with people their own age. Kids are happy, excited, and more appreciative than adults are, and because of that, I miss the days when someone really loved me, without restrictions or fears as they put against me today. I have no relatives that care about me, and all of my past friends who I thought were close to me have all forgotten about me as if I don't even exist anymore. Relationships at work are casual as most working people are too busy to appreciate the fun of life, so that's out of the question. I sit alone at home and write, but it takes up a lot of time, which I regret wasting, because I could be spending my time outside to enjoy a nice day with a girl to have fun with. Unfortunately, I can't think of a reason to go outside when there aren't many places to meet someone, so my only choices are to go out for bike rides or play with a basketball in the park, but nobody is ever around no matter where I go, and it would be very nice if I actually had someone to share my life with. As much as everyone claims to look out for one another, I don't feel very wanted at all. Just so I can cheer up or share my happiness, I wish that I could have someone nice to be with.

I always wondered why the extra verse from the soundtrack wasn't on the...well, at least the U.S. version of the movie. Cut out for timing purposes, I suppose? Too bad, because the movie version of the song has less weight. On a general note, I always loved that piano is the only instrument (with a little percussion). And of course, that this scene is Jim talking to himself for almost four minutes! XD

Me and my two sisters (I'm the youngest of three) used to watch the Muppet show when we were young in the eighties. The middle sister sadly is no longer with us, but these are still sweet memories.

The one who directed it was James Frawley so he should be the one to ask how Jim Henson could voice Kermit and Rowlf at the same time here. Also yes, I'm sure somewhere Jim Hensons voice might have been tape recorded to make it sound like he's voicing Kermit and Rowlf at the same time especially since it would be hard to voice two different voices at the same time especially from 3:15-3:25 which could have made Jim Henson out of breath very fast using two voices and/or cause him to cough. It's also amazing how he is able to switch voices back and forth like that.
@@afriendofbean Frank was Jim's right-hand man, so even if he wasn't on set that day, (which he probably was) Jim would have discussed with Frank all the procedures of the film. Besides, James Frawley is dead...

What really gets me is the fact that Jim Henson voiced and operated both Kermit and Rowlf, and managed to have them sing at the same time. This wasn't practical in the show proper because of tighter limitations, so I'm glad he was able to do this with the extended budget.

The Muppets Genius Jim Henson
I find this scene very unusual for this movie because both kermit and rowlf are voiced by jim henson. I dont see how he could have performed both of them here, given that they are two different kinds of muppets. Kermit is a muppet where one person can play the head and control the arms on rods. But rowlf is a muppet that requires two people where one person does the head while another performs the hands. So does anybody have any idea how jim could have voiced both of them here?
Most of their songs are pre-recorded then played by puppeteers. He probably pre-recorded, switching voices then played Kermit while two others played Rowlf

He has a couple of beers, he takes a walk, and he goes to bed. I guess those are a couple of ways to forget about your stress and worries in your life, especially to put yourself to sleep when you can't try, but I certainly would never drink though. Not a drop. I'd rather face my troubles and think clearly than to risk losing my mind.

Steve Whitmire did Rowlf’s hands if I remember correctly. I’m not sure how they split the rest of the doubling though.
At least for modern productions, if, I don’t know, Piggy and Fozzie are in a scene together, or something like that, the main performer will generally take the character that has more to do in that particular scene.
@@megelizabeth9492 That was usually the case in the old days as well. Whitmire recalled that understudying was one of the ways new puppeteers were trained.

Actually all of the lyrics in the song are in the soundtrack version. This song shouldn't have been cut in the US release. In fact, nothing should've been cut when The Muppet Movie came across the pond. Why was this movie cut in the first place?
Because the studio felt the full song was too mature for a family audience.

If you compare the soundtrack and this video, there are still some cuts in the intro before they start singing. Not sure if those parts were ever put to film though.

That entire section from 1:44 to 2:34 is included in the soundtrack but never made the final cut in the film. Maybe the producers felt it to be a bit too suggestive...
