The story behind the production of this song just amazes me.....She wrote this song when she was 12. Let that sink in....That level of emotion, and the ability to express it in words at age 12. You really need to look up the lyrics, they are really powerful. This song came together at the end of a producing session when they just had a few minutes left. She truly is a God given talent that will be around for a long time....just be greatful yall that you are here at the beginning.

Actually I think she was 13, but that's just quibbling isn't it? People who get depressed have said the song affected them deeply. It made me cry. (along with A Better Life and Beautiful Thing, which I think is a modern day classic) I'm traveling from Vancouver to Toronto to see her on her latest tour; soooo excited!

Oh yes, it was worth the trip. If I hadn't seen her I would be kicking myself for years. I'm sure she will have many amazing performances in the future but I'm so glad I saw her now.

She is truly amazing and as a fellow musician I am amazed at her gift she has been blessed with And how she mastered it at only 12 with her first EP four songs which blew me away then at 13 her Full album “just the beginning “ took talent to a whole new level along with A handful of singles. She writes and produces her own songs in which Columbia records and let her do her own thing

    • @jamessmithe5490
      @jamessmithe5490 5 років тому +7

Well, co-produces; she never records a song and just lets someone else produce it,(like the true artist that she is) but she does have a collaborator for her songs. But, how many 13 year olds(when she was recording her cd) can assert themselves artistically that way? As you say, she is truly amazing. And I have nothing but praise for Columbia for just letting her find her own path.

Excellent reaction, thanks. The lyrics... really listen to them is my recommendation! Seriously, this is the song that put Grace on a level I reserve for Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, and the like. But I am a product of the sixties and early seventies, the era when there were so many awesome songs that were poetry as much as music. She has a lot more in this vein. Your discussion of her musical talents is spot on. But when you combine that with her writing talent, her amazing personality, and her intelligence she puts herself among the elite of singer/songwriters of all time. Of course this is just my opinion, but many others agree. Which brings me to my second point: Be warned that you are about to be sucked down the rabbit hole into Grace World. It is a beautiful place, a true Wonderland, but there is no escape!

If you want to be blown away try checking out her acoustic "In My Blood" cover on the Elvis Duran show (14yo at the time). She is one of those people who can own a song effortlessly. Another that is amazing is her cover of Ed Sherran's "The A Team "at Paste Studios. She had just turned 13 at the time and it is her first time playing the guitar publicly after spending a week learning it with UA-cam tutorials. (Links below)
Amazing explanation by the way, and you are exactly right. Her lyrics and vocals always amaze me, but it was more then that and I have not been able to figure it out. She seems to suck in so many different people of different ages and backgrounds, not the just young girls you often see in her concert footage.
Bob Boilen, who does the NPR Tiny Desk Concerts, has a great story about how he stumbled upon her after grabbing tickets for what he thought was a show by rock guitarist Grace Vonderkuhn. After realizing his mistake (the line of tweens around the block apparently tipped him off) he decided to check her out. He got sucked in as well and it wasn't long before he had her on the TDC.
Taking in the fact that she didn't start playing music seriously and writing songs until she was 11 years old, getting her uke with her B-day $. Learned to play it off UA-cam. Then she auditioned for AGT the next spring and going on to win with her only actual stage experience being small open mics at coffee shops.
It just boggles the mind how some people just have a destiny.
Even if you don't react to these I recommend listening to them. Normally covers are just that but even Shawn Mendez was blown away by her cover of his song.

The best reactions to Grace are always the professional musicians. Invariably they’re always blown away. Grace wasn’t “amazing for a 12 year old” - she’s just flat out amazing at any age.. It is the nuances and textures of her vocals that isn’t something you could ever learn or train or develop, it is just something that was God given (if you believe in that) or a gift of nature. I’ve seen Grace perform live 5 times. I’ve seen her in tiny venues accompanied with just her uke and I seen her in stadiums warming up for Imagine Dragons, she is awesome in both settings but it is in the small venues where you really get to experience all the magic of her unmatched vocals.
    This girl is special.

Again, I love how totally you get Grace. And join the club - everyone has trouble naming a genre for her, she slides to and between genres in the same song. Loved how you said it was strange to compare her to such a big name as Springsteen, but got deep into it anyway. Have heard her compared to Sia, Adele, - and Ray Charles! Always with; not that she sounds like them, but there are elements...
She is great when she opens up and belts it (even when 12). I think she was fighting a cold here. She really opens it up in the studio version.
You appreciate her pacing, phrasing: I think you would really enjoy how she had these instincts from the beginning. Listen to her "Beautiful Thing" from America's Got Talent. At 12, such changes of timing, dynamics, tone - conveyed with just her voice and a ukulele! Written totally alone, in her room. And the dynamics are all in service of her being a conduit for emotion.

And yes, though you didn't hear them, the lyrics are way beyond what you would expect from a 13 year old(when she recorded it for her album). I think, if you really haven't seen it you should check out her debut on America's Got Talent; you'll realize it's not just her unique vocal stylings that turn people into such devoted fans. It's her unique personality. I haven't been a fan of anyone in 40 years, and appreciate the talent of others but I'm crazy about Grace. Interesting that you would compare her to Springsteen though; that never would have occurred to me. Good reaction. She is her own thing. Her earliest songs have complex phrasing, time Sig's, and chords. Some are paired with cello and piano. The producers were very careful to keep her voice forward. The studio version captures the rich texture of her voice better than the restricted gain on an outdoor mic did here.
Check out the ACL Fest first week and watch her command the audience. Better Life is a simple tune but she just unhooks her jaw and belts it out. I have all her ballads on a loop and it's great driving tunes which seems to prompt some epiphany of some sort. She hasn't released a bad song yet. Thanks for your observations on this. @@knate_official Not only dd she write the song but incredibly I heard she wrote it in about 20 minutes when she had some spare time in a recording studio in NYC when she was working on her album "Just the Beginning". I'd highly recommend listening to the album version too. The depth of FEELING she put's into it is staggering. It's had me in tears many times and I'm 66 years old! You mentioned her phrasing... YESSSS!! That's one of a long list of standouts to me about her. Listening to her from a drummer's perspective her innate sense of rhythmic phrasing is off the scale. She plays syllables like a seasoned percussionist! "Can't Escape my Mind" is a fine example, but really it's notable in all of her songs.

It's kind of subtle and easy to miss but there's lots of other "clues" like that I've seen in a lot of her other videos that tells me she's not just standing there singing and playing the uke oblivious to the backup musicians. She's totally aware of everything going on.... The whole sound, almost like a conductor would do. She's everything all rolled into one complete package. Singer, songwriter, arranger, producer, ukulele player. All topped off with stunning good looks tempered by a humble positive attitude. From day one, her audition (I Don't Know my Name) is packed full of dynamics and well thought out song structure you'd never expect from a 12 year old kid banging out an original song.

      @donjones4719 4 роки тому

@@Emondotcalm Yes, her "sense of rhythmic phrasing is off the scale," and anything but conventional. In many songs her phrasing is whatever she wants it to be for that line, regardless of the line before or after. Is aware of her percussionist, the basic beat, but independent of it when she wants. One of the things that makes her unique. This very special phrasing is one item of the specialness that people heard/felt in IDKMN, even if they didn't realize it. Also one reason people can't name a specific genre for most of her songs.
In IDKMN and Beautiful Thing, the girl sounds like she never heard of a metronome in her life. Just has that flexible beat in her mind.

I didn’t listen to the words at first either. Her WAY, and delivery, like you say, was all I could concentrate on in the beginning. Just wrapping my head around a little girl writing such a song. What is she? Fourteen, or thirteen here? THEN there is the words, which then turns the whole thing into mind boggling. And she is no fluke because their are so many other songs at least equally as unbelievable. And so much variety. You say Springsteen, I say Beatles. I have just never seen such a thing. Listening to this song around other people is sorta difficult to do. It is an extremely deep emotional song. One of these days don't be surprised if you're listening closely to the lyrics and you start crying your eyes out. If you've ever been "there". And many of us have been "there", it's a hard emotion to deal (fear). IMO, it's essentially a little girl crying out in fear for anyone (friends, fans, family, God), to save her from the darkness (depression, sadness, evil). At times she is begging for help.
She does have some hooky songs as well. Check out all of her AGT performances, everyone of those are major "sing along" songs. In case you don't know yet she writes her own music. (I subbed and liked).
She an assortment of astonishing covers and about 15? Or 16? originals. She also has 4 or 5 unreleased songs you can find on UA-cam (my favorite 12STARS).
Sorry I start typing about Grace, I either cry or write an essay. I'm a 49 yr old man. I used to tear up pretty good for about a year and a half every time I watched her sing. If you watch her AGT in order with the judges comments, you get to see a little girls dream come true, before your eyes. And it's a beautiful thing.

But, WE OUT HERE don't need to be so analytical, and we just need to enjoy the music and singing, and we don't have to go so deep into the analysis. Perhaps that's what's wrong with the music industry, where people just want to enjoy the music and singing and lyrics and performances, while the industry fills up the airwaves with JUNK. It's kinda like with the movies, where the critics love the "artsy" movies and those end up getting the Oscars and other awards, whereas the people mostly go to the action movies and super-hero movies and even horror movies and monster movies; IOW, what the people enjoy and want, is not what the industry consider best.
In any case, I don't fault you for your analytical ways; to each his own. I'll just enjoy the ride.

@@Calers-gu1ib yeah, I can see that. Vocal coaches are usually so focused on proper processes and techniques that they usually cant quite grasp when someone is so good outside those accepted boundaries. I was a singer in a Mike Patton-esqe metal band back in the mid-2000s, and I was quite adept at a lot of his wild, character driven tone and style changes. My vocal coach at the time had no clue how to approach what I was doing in those songs. He was able to help me improve on my breath control and pitch consistency in my singing, but the different character voices I had in each of those songs he wouldnt touch. I suspect that those vocal coaches wont react for the same reason. Whats the point of reacting as a coach if youre just gonna shrug your shoulders at the camera?

@@efrainadorno2344 Thanks. I appreciate the clarification. The over-analysis I do on these reactions is how my brain operates on everything every day. Youre getting a direct line into the thought processes I would have if I was doing this without the camera on. Although it can be quite exhausting, its also allowed me to understand and teach myself to do things just by observing others. Its a skill that Ive come to really appreciate as Ive gotten into middle age.

I would love to see your reaction to Grace's performance of "Clearly" on the Stephen Colbert show. Don't want to spoil it for you, but I think you will really like the end of the bridge. ua-cam.com/video/nJ9awW8vwIU/v-deo.html

Can you react to Allie Sherlock? She is a 14 year old Irish busker (she plays music on the street)
She does a lot of covers but also has amazing original songs. Anything of hers is mesmerizing.
Here is one of her originals if you want to start with one of those. It’s called Some People ua-cam.com/video/XE-TfFI42dA/v-deo.html

If you can't understand all the lyrics of this song, you should read the lyrics. Maybe, watch a lyric video of this song. It would be worth it.

Hey you, I really enjoy your “intelligent” comments. It’s refreshing to say the the least - that is, to listen to reactions by someone who seems to be “schooled” in the subject of music, which I absolutely no nothing about. True.
Something I do know about, though, is that as part of your work, personal presentation is also extremely important. And so my good-looking, intelligent and talented young man, please get the hell out of your broom closet and show a more professional side of yourself. Your work and personality are so good, it’s a shame that’s it’s not reflected more in your personal surroundings. So grab a friend, pick a new paint color, clean it up a bit more, keep your closet and cupboard doors shut, put up couple of nice pics and see what good that could bring your way. Cool! My best for your continued success.

Check out some recent reactions. Been working on minimizing my background as you suggested. It bothers me too
