Let's Talk About the Northman

- Vikings! They're sort of a hot topic right now, but director Robert Eggers is nothing if not creative, creepy, and downright inspired. The Northman is one of those movies I wish I'd talked about sooner, but I now intend to make up for that lost time in style. Please allow me to share with you my thoughts on this brilliant retelling of an old, old myth...the Northman!

This movie should have made the same impact Gladiator did in 2000, but it sadly seems to have slipped under the radar of the masses.
This. I actually think the similarities to Gladiator are enormous, and it certainly deserves all the attention it can get!
My favorite film as well. We need to watch it again... and soon.
Dope film watched it a few times now
I definitely intend to make watching it a tradition of some sort. We’ll see what I can up with…
I've recommend it to so many people. I wish I saw it in the theatre, but the trailer didn't do it any justice at all.
I agree. I went in expecting a (very good) action movie with Vikings in it. I was aware Robert Eggers had a few tricks up his sleeve, but I really wasn’t ready for what I got!
I doubt anything in the next decade or so will beat Dune and the Northman, these will be the cinematic legacy of the 2020s
Of that I have no doubt. I haven’t had the chance to see Dune Part Two yet, but I thought the first was a perfectly fine movie (with admittedly stunning cinematography, and the acting was phenomenal).
I for one would like to see a film adaptation of the Dishonored series in the style of the new Dune movie (consider the scenes on Caladan). It would be beautiful…
i wasnt expecting anything, and i was so wrong, best movie ive seen in theaters in a long time
I wholeheartedly agree. Might be my favorite movie of all time!
I didn't like it. Too many creepy/religious/foreboding for me. I mean, how many sequences of that do we need?
That’s fair. I suppose taste is everything, because my answer to that question is usually: More. A whole lot more. I eat that stuff up!
That said, I think I’d be miserable if every freaking movie was as esoteric as Eraserhead… 😂
Yeah... I see the Hamlet reference there, and the visuals where powerful, yes. However storywise it was a big disapointment for me. Overly simple. It's like all the story would've been easily avoided if...
(Spoiler alert)
...the father wasn't killed in front of his son.
I can see that, but I also can’t help but think it’s a comment on the culture. You know, revenge and all that. Regardless of how horrible the War-Raven was as a person, a murder still took place, and Fjolnir (the brother) still wanted Amleth dead.
I can see your point, it is a somewhat standard plot, but I personally don’t think it’s as shallow as one might at first think. Then again, I could be biased, as I love a good Viking story 🤷♂️
