Interesting how your take on private servers is so negative. It was a private server that lead us to getting classic in the first place
This is basically entirely true. If you look back, Blizzard only decided to pursue creating their own vanilla servers because of the quite large and growing demand for them. Nostalrius was part of that wake up call, and part of the reason they issued a takedown for them was because Blizzard decided they wanted to provide their own vanilla servers.

Xar is either bipolar or just loves to ass kiss the biggest thing in the moment. For example, retail was trash talked, xar immediately jumped on board to trash talk. Then hyped up SoD while it was being hyped. Now he's trash talking SoD because everyone else is. Hardcore was hyped for a while, xar was on board. Now HC is kinda small side thing and xar trash talks it and recommends blizz do this or that to it. Previously like Asmon he was all about UE5 wow when it was just a trailer that he watched asmon watch. Now all of a sudden he's against it, because big bad blizz said omfg we gonna lose money.

Turtle WoW devs running absolute circles around the Blizzard devs in terms of quality. Sadly the Blizzard devs have shown with SoD that they have absolutely no clue what makes vanilla amazing and such a timeless classic. Just like Ultima Online, the very best servers this day are by far the private servers. Sure they operate in a grey zone and Blizzard has a shareholder duty to issue takedowns, but they're a definite plus for the players, especially the passionate fans who care about vanilla-style gameplay.
...until they suddenly shut down and hundreds of hours of work goes down the drain for thousands of people. I'd love to play on private servers more, I just can't commit my already limited time to a game which might just disappear overnight without warning. That isn't to the player's benefit at all.

Literally I've been having fun with phase 4 for the cpl weeks it lasts but they literally put no effort into it. Mobs thrown into a zone that was already there from incursions new dungeon. Items quickly buffed a lil n added n a event where mobs were jus quickly thrown in a little area like incursions.

It's ten volunteer devs working in their spare time that's making this UE5 update to the game. They've been working on it for a year now. And it's launching next year. Ten people.
Blizzard has around one hundred total working on SoD/Cata. The company is desperate to take this down. As it not only gives people what they've wanted for a LONG time (new engine). But it's being done with no budget by a handful of volunteers. This is making Blizzard look incompetent to the max.

Turtle wow didn't imply they owned the IP at all. If Blizzard wants to take down people actually exploiting their IP for money, they should take down Ascension. Ascension is like a more "p2w" version of retail. They literally sell blizzard-made transmogs for money in their cash shop among countless other pay for convenience things (which get wiped from your account every season).

Under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act they absolutely can do that. They can ask UA-cam to strike any video using their intellectual property. It's federal law.

Which obviously isn't nothing, but it also isn't like it's a complete re-imagining, and it's not just a cinematic teaser of what the game could look like, they're promoting a private server with that video, very obviously... It has nothing to do with a visual representation of what could be.

For the first time I have to disagree with you on this
"That's illegal" and "You can't do that, that's not cool" kinda make you sound like someone who's never played mods for a game before. What Blizzard is weird about with their games, other developers are completely fine with. Blizzard's always been very, very weird in regards to mods with WoW. I think the only time they should realistically even have to worry is when something big like Nostalrius happens, but there isn't really a feasible way for Turtle WoW or others like Ascension to even get that big. And yes, I'm aware of their own legal obligations, but I think those restrictions that they made for themselves harm the fanbase in the long-term.
Not the first time they get weird by mods and stuff xD remember the lawsuit against Dota 2 and Valve? wich thank god failed in court, cause they did not make the mod in WC3
@@jimmiekarlsson4458 Oh I completely forgot about that! That'd be probably one of the greatest examples of their stance on mods being strange. If Blizzard had worked with Dota and capitalized on it sooner, then they would've dominated the MOBA market. But I'm kind of glad that wasn't the case.
It's not the same as modding since it's offering the game for free. It's more akin to piracy. Personally I have no objections since Blizzard doesn't offer a good alternative themselves.
@@MrRavmoor It's a mixture of both worlds, although it's still a modded version. They've made multiple new dungeons and modifications to existing dungeons along with new races and new customizations for existing races.

Xaryu, I don't think they're implying that they think they own the IP by arguing their content is highly transformative. They're probably arguing for Fair Use / Copyright rights. There's loads of mods out there that follow the same kind of ideas. Technically speaking, Blizzard has been fine with this before in regards to other games like Warcraft 3: Reforged (and to a slight lesser extent their other RTS games), granted each situation is different from the other.

jfc what you think I need you to tell me what somebodies IP is? Or that I care? IPs aren't globally enforced and when you make as many changes as Twow has specifically with things like Unreal, what's to strike? Blizzard didn't make the video, or make a version of WoW that runs in unreal.
Showcasing a video of your own unique version of WoW isn't copyrightable, they can't bogart people making changes that are derivative of the original in a video format.
Because it's their IP you can't just take wow and port it to unreal then try to put it on mobile hell wow hasn't even went mobile yet. That would be like if I went to your house took your car and went and got flames and skulls painted on it and tried to pass it off as my own.

@@NotTheWheel So the IP has more to do with the idea, rather than how the game is coded or what engine it's on. The place where this begins to get muddy is when a modding community, like Turtle WoW, begin to incorporate their own unique ideas or additions to the game. This could be in the form of dungeon changes, map changes, raids, class design, etc. One can argue that it is an entirely different game, albeit still under the WoW IP.
Having said that, Blizzard undeniably owns the Warcraft IP. Do I think Turtle WoW or other projects, like Ascension, should be taken down though? No, not at all. I don't think Blizzard has anything to worry about, because it's a very niche community, and it's offering different gameplay, so there is less overlap with what Blizzard themselves are providing. The case with with something like Nostalrius was different because Blizzard was actually planning on producing their own version of vanilla, and Nostalrius also just got a bit too big.
I hope that, eventually, Blizzard changes their stances on modding communities for WoW, because in the long-term it will potentially be very important. Blizzard isn't necessarily immortal and could someday die down and have to shutter the WoW servers - so having modding communities build themselves over time is important. We see this happen with numerous other games all the time.

Imo there is NO REASON why WoW in 2024 should be locked behind a $50 expansion AND a monthly subscription, especially when you consider how many micro-transactions they already have have, including blatant pay2win via the WoW Token and leveling boosts...
I'm playing "the devil's advocate" here, but people just wanna play WoW and have fun, without having to spend money on it every month PLUS every ~2 years on it... Which is why we have private servers. I think they should just ditch the subscription already, and make the expansions cost 70 bucks or so...

I'm sorry, but do you realize how much money goes into WoW? Compare any WoW expansion to another MMORPG. I've played a lot of MMORPGs, and to have massive content updates as big as WoW every 2 years with even more to come over the course of those two years is unheard of for a lot of MMOs. I think the only level of scale that's even close is FFXIV/ESO.
FFXIV netcode and servers and content updates by comparison are not even that amazing, and yet people eat that up, deal with all its microtransaction, sub cost, and expansion cost, and say it's the best MMORPG ever. Even with Dawntrails story being hit with a lot of negative reviews, people are still eating it up. With WoW right now you get MoP Remix, Dragonflight, in a couple of days prepatch for War Within, WoW Classic, WoW Classic Cata, WoW SoD, WoW Hardcore/SSF... All for one sub price. I'd argue that is more valuable and worth more money than FFXIV, especially when you consider how much content you get... More transmogs, mounts, pets, and content in general.
ESO is probably the best value for a MMORPG though. You pay one massive price, comparable to that of a AAA deluxe/platnium edition, and you get every expansion + the newest to experience, with no sub cost. Next to that GW2 offers a very similar price structure. However in GW2 I know for a fact they have more p2w than WoW/FFXIV, where you can just buy gear pretty much, and I assume as much for ESO, even though I'm not sure.
Path of Exile has the best pricing structure, with no p2w, unless you count storage as p2w, and just cosmetics, with free updates. However if you compare content updates in PoE to WoW, PoE basically requires you to replay the same game with small changes every season, with the hope of a potential big update that adds a new boss, but that's less common.
While yes, you're right, that WoW could get away with no sub, the fact that they have a sub allows them to keep on top without having predatory monetization strategies like Diablo Immortal, gacha games, or korean MMOs like Lost Ark... Which are free, but you pay the price with your time wasted while others bypass the grind that was made purposefully frustrating and not fun, with daily login rewards/daily quest that are the same thing each time, that you repeat over and over to upgrade gear, just to have that gear break, making you want to end it.

Blizzard does not have copyright over the UE5 engine implementation of WoW, nor do they have copyright on the transformative work of making the trailer.
They have a trademark on the term World of Warcraft and many of the characters in it, which is why Turtle WoW needs to make sure it gets the data from the classic client and patches it.
Once they do that and have replaced both server and engine, it’s over for Blizzard.

Examples include the wine project, Linux, and tons of game engines like OpenMW or OpenRCT2. Blizzard have in the past shut down these sorts of things, but that's not because they have a right to do so - it is mostly toothless intimidation, for example against projects like Warsmash.
The only thing Blizzard can nail them on is the fact that they redistribute a modified version of the 1.12 client. They have to stop doing that. They need to say get your 1.12 client somewhere else - here's a patcher, here's the new data, and then they're in the clear.

I regularly see 5k players on at once on turtle wow, do you think I, or any of the other players give a crap about IP? Here's the thing Xaryu, nobody cares who makes the next vanilla-like game. If blizzard does it great, if turtle wow does it, great. However, I feel activision is incapable of it. I didn't pay them 20$ a month so that they could provide 0 gm support, and let botting and gdkp's run the show. In fact, with how they abuse their own employee's, and hide their wrongdoings, I even feel pirating is more moral that supporting the Activicriminals.
And you know what? I recently gave turtle wow 150$, and I felt good about it. I don't remember the last time I felt good about giving Activision a cent.

Without private server you would have never enjoy classic, hardcore or sod but instead would still eating blizzard retail shit forever. Turtle WoW benevol team make so huge and work compared to the small indie company which in front of the shame, had to strike the trailer. However it will not stop Turtle and vanilla+ hype like vanilla itself at the time of Nostalrius (but too bad, Blizzard will not be able too shutdown directly the server like they did with Nostalrius at the time).
Turtle WoW actually purpose an experience at years of what Blizzard purpose to his poor players : a real community, events, no bots, no cheat, no pay to win, games masters, real classic+ updates. And Blizzard will not be able to get back the hundred of thousands of players back that choose Turtle WoW today until they give us a similar quality product which they haven't been able to give since 15 years.
But hey, if you guys still want to support the sexual equality and milk drinking small indie company, you are all free to continue playing a pay to win, low server budget, very bad and very unbalanced recreation of Ascension WoW with the updated guild UI in same time than we discover the 40 man T4 raid version of Tol Borad on Unreal Engine developed by people who actually like WoW and not only money.

Turtle wow does what blizz refuses to do.
I don’t think I’ve seen but one bot on turtle and they get banned almost immediately. No gold selling, the economy has been healthy and inflation free. They fix what is broken. An example would be the z-axis, where mobs could attack you from the ceiling or the bottom of a tower if they were on the same z axis. Do I even need to mention fly hacking? That was in the game for the entirety of classic. I think blizzard tries too hard to appease share holders instead of their player base.

when its ported it stops being microsoft/blizzards
If you did ANY research on Turtle WoW at ALL, you'd find out that damn near everything has been changed. The talents, the classes, hell, even some of the trash loot is different. To say it ISN'T transformative is insanely misinformed. Also, in ALL copyright laws if something is changed over 15%, then it is considered to be different enough to be owned by the one who changed it. Just because they call the world Azeroth doesn't mean Bastard Blizz has any rights to it. It has been changed far over 15%, so Blizz can GET BENT! This new update will only further change it.
Being able to utilize the legal system to your advantage, does not make you automatically in the moral or ethical, right.

Im not convinced by that argument. If the community presents an idea they would like and the company chooses to ignore the idea and proceed in a different direction. Trying to become more light hearted and disney like. I could claim blizzard is stealing from disney based on cartoony animations and faces. I believe they should have to purchase the extra work put into it. Its not their fault if people like the game more than the original. Legally I understand. I just dont agree.
This video should be shut down due to the amount of Twitter (X) content included in it. You don't own Twitter, and the entirety of this video contains its content, and little more. A single voice-over with a video in the corner does not make it original content.

Without Nostalrius we would never have WoW classic. Private server dev teams do it BETTER than Blizz.

Wow private servers aren't illegal... It's illegal to run a private server for profit. There's absolutely nothing wrong with playing on private servers.
Most of the people condemning private servers are the ones shilling classic and most likely have played on Nostalrius before its shutdown. At least give the folks some credit for what they are doing with a small team, something that Blizz with the BILLIONS of dollars they have will never do.

Sure, making a WOW 2 with those graphics is definitely illegal.
But the video trailer itself, does not depict wow and IS highly transformative.

I fully support private servers, look at project ascension. If the actual game was advancing people wouldn't feel the need to go to private servers. The new talent trees + dragonriding is cool and all but it's something that should've been in the game 5 expansions ago.
TurtleWow and Ascension wow are literally making way better versions of the game than blizzard ever has. Ascensions expansion thats coming i been playing its ptr they have 23 classes all different from anything blizzard has ever done all of them according to lore its amazing.

I agree with you Xar, but you know that Blizzard never would create something so awesome like this. Blizzard only cares about money, so does Microsoft and all multi bil-companies and the current law makes it harder for good games to be created.
wouldnt have to do it if blizzard did it but we all know they not doing it so let the private server do it when blizzard sees everyone playing they will shut it down and make their own just like how they released classic after seeing everyone wanted to play older ver of wow
