After every new Jihadist attack against the West, politicians reassure us that the atrocity does not represent the true nature of mainstream Islam. Of the 1.6 billion Muslims in the world, they constantly reassure us, the overwhelming majority are as law abiding as any members of any other monotheistic faith. Only a tiny fraction engage in terror. And Islam is a religion of peace. Furthermore, we are told, the great majority of Muslims hold moderate views.
But what does that mean? How moderate are moderate Muslims? Given the threat of radical Islam, it would seem to be a fair question. Let me start to answer it by telling you something of my own story.
I was raised in a middle class Muslim home in Cairo, Egypt. Growing up, I was told, among many other things, the following: That every day that passes on the Islamic nation without a caliphate is a sin. That the failures and miseries of the Muslim world started the moment we Muslims gave up conquests and wars against the infidels. That our prosperity depended on conquering new lands and converting new believers. That anyone who leaves the faith must die. And I also remember how my teachers and my mosque imams reacted to the news of 9/11 when it happened: joy.
My experience was typical, and there is data to prove it: According to the Pew Research Center, 88% of Muslims in Egypt, 62% in Pakistan, 86% in Jordan and 51% in Nigeria believe that any Muslim who choses to leave Islam should be put to death. Similar, if not identical, numbers are in favor of stoning people who commit adultery, severely punishing those who criticize Muhammad or Islam, and chopping off hands for theft.
All of these practices are a part of the penal code of Islamic law, which is known as Sharia. And 84% of Muslims in South Asia, 77% in Southeast Asia, 74% in the Middle East and North Africa and 64% in Sub-Saharan Africa support Sharia as the law of the land. Less drastic, yet significant, percentages are to be found even among Muslim communities in the West.
So, too, most of the world's Muslims believe that any acts of violence against Israel, including suicide bombers in buses and restaurants, are justified. Now, does any of this sound moderate to you? Yet if anyone raises these inconvenient truths here in the West, he is sure to be called an Islamophobe, a hater of Islam. Again, my own story is instructive.
In February of 2015, I was yelled at, cursed at, and successfully prevented from speaking at Swarthmore College by students and others who did not agree to what I was saying. Some of them were Muslim women who fit the image of the unveiled, perfect English-speaking, moderate Muslim young woman. Other seeming “moderates” tried and failed to do the same during my speech at Temple University the next day. Some of them, sadly, were students of journalism.

Want to know the truth? It's not solely because of Islam. It's more because of nationality. The U.S invaded Iraq -> Iraqis became angry -> ISIS was founded/re-branded as a "solution". 3 years later, ISIS started in 2006 in Iraq. This video left out the reason for radical islam is invasion of islamic countries.
If USA didn't invade Iraq, Iraqi terrorists wouldn't have started an onslaught against USA and NATO in Europe. Libya, Iraq, Syria, Iran has faced invasions of USA. Iran was the victim of multiple U.S Coups. Iraq was the victim of invasion by American Blackwater Mercenaries which is a CIA Sponsored Mercenary Company.
The Kurds over there were armed by USA to do the dirty job of ethnically cleansing Iraq together. Now the same thing happens in Syria. In East Xinjiang, Uyhgur Chinese Civilans are victims of Chinese Invasion, forced by Chinese to become Communists, cut their beards or end in jail if not cutting it off. This is Forced Brainwashing. It's imoral, it's wrong. But the Chinese kept on doing this. Now many Uyghurs have become extremists because of this and have taken up arms against China.
They may not have neecissairly attacked the US, but there would have been Muslims gathered together killing unbelievers SOMEWHERE. Muhammad said himself that the ending wont come until Muslims are gathered against the Jews killing them. Merely being a religion, or identifying as an Abrahamic religion, doesnt make it in any way like Christianity. Its entirely its own doctrine with its own set of values and teachings, and that includes violence against unbelievers.

There are MILLIONS of reform Muslims who speak out against and protest extremism, but it's not your fault you don't know about it. You haven't heard of it because the MEDIA DOESN'T COVER IT. They don't cover Muslim leaders like Andrei Sakhorov and Vaclav Havel who speak out against it or events such as the 30,000 Muslims from around the world who traveled to the UK to protest Isis a few months ago. You will see the media is not trying to paint a good picture for Muslims. People that agree with this video is because the media has told them this. Do some fact checking on other religions. well, as far as I know, no one really "lump" on me, and i think its because I'm Asian and doesn't look like middle eastern person. Most of Asian Muslims rarely get lumped on as the other Muslims, I think we have a little bit different take on the religion and that's what make us seem more moderate. I think the violentness and other bad things is not really associated to the religion, but to their culture and background; because I think people in the middle eastern country had it rough and have different view on moral standards, while where I came from our moral standards is not really that different than where I live now(US). (I know technically they are Asians too, i meant like Asian looking people, you know what I mean)

I am a Muslim living in the west and i agree with everything you said. I love my God but right now i am having a lot of doubts of my religion. I will ever leave my religion though, ever. So please don't take me the wrong way but i am just extremely confused and i need to do a lot more research into this religion i am following. Tbh i agree with you, Islam IS in need of reform but sadly i don't think that will ever happen.

I couldn't agree more with this, this is basically what I've been saying for years. I was also a muslim raised in a middle-class family, and EVERYTHING this video showed are very sadly true. People who deny the factual data, and don't believe first-hand accounts NEED to actually study the horrible facts and re-evaluate their views accordingly. And even these are just some examples of the adverse effects of the religion's general mindset.
People need to understand that it is NOT offensive to acknowledge facts. What offensive is ignoring the often unheard voice of people who are the victims of people who are not in their right mind because they are faithful to such belief.
And one of the reason people hate islam and muslims is because THEY LIE and DENY all of those things. Which make people more angry.

I am a muslim from south east asia. Some well-knpwn preachers in my country do support, and order their audience to support sharia law in an explicit way (by mentioning hand chopping or another anti-humanism act). The other preachers speak about it smoothly by not mentioning the cruel parts. And the rest preachers said that sharia law cannot be interpreted literally as the same as its practice in ancient time, instead, it is something subliminal and the value is already exist in modern law. You can say that this last type of preachers as the moderate one. Ironically they keep on losing power and attention among the believers. They also started to be called as the liberal-bad-false preachers who dont follow the prophet teaching correctly. So... yea... this started to scare me as a moderate muslim

I really appreciate you highlighting that we moderate Muslims exist, cause we really do. When the twin towers came down my mom told me she cried for hours cause of how bad it was. Unfortunately most Muslims are becoming radical extremists but we moderate ones exist. The problem is most us don't realise that Islam is just a religion, just like every other religion. We're made to believe that our religion is perfect and I guess all religions tell that to it's followers and every religion believes it's the correct one but some Muslims don't realise that other ppl also think their religion is correct too so they go on thinking islam is the only religion that should be followed and others are wrong and shouldn't be followed and start seeing non Muslims as not human beings and it's just wrong. The only way we'll ever have peace in this tiny rock of ours drifting through space is if we recognise and respect the fact that the same way we believe our religion is perfect is the same way everyone believes their religion is perfect cause even the Quran says that..You have your religion and I have my own. Everyone should have the right to worship what they want. Cause if you were to go into a Muslim majority country and say Christianity or Judaism is the right religion you'd probably be killed. I stayed on an island in Thailand for 4 weeks at a guesthouse owned and operated by a muslim family. The entire family was so nice and courteous to me the entire time, asked me to sit down and join their family for dinner on multiple occasions. The eldest son asked me questions about living in the west & the culture, I asked him about his culture & faith & and if it was a big influence in his families life. We were basically 2 people from different worlds sitting and having a conversation...while sharing coca cola. His Dad would let me hop on one of their motorbikes for free whenever I needed to cruise down to the markets and buy anything (other guests had to pay to rent them XD).
This family just wanted to live in peace on this beautiful island.
We can't ignore the threat of extremist Islam towards the West, but there really are Muslims out there who are decent human beings & shouldn't be held to the same standard as the extremists.
DarkWandererAU yeah I hear you, I lived in Indonesia during the 90’s when I was a teenager (my dad worked at a big mine) I didn’t have any issues, I had a great Muslim friend and a few that I was close with. Having said this, there were huge cultural differences between us, my sister (2 years older than me) couldn’t go out and hang in public, the women had a totally different experience than me and dad. My mother was not allowed to drive either. It was a great experience but I thing the cultural divide between us and them is too big to have large scale migration, it just won’t happen. When we were living there we had to follow their rules, be very respectful towards their traditions etc. that’s just not the case when the roles are reversed.

I had Egyptian Muslims living next to me for a few years, and they were really friendly to my face. But, they would throw huge chunks of metal and plastic in my yard and other trash. I live in Mindanao in Southern Philippines. We (as well as my ancestors) live with Muslims for about 600 years here. This is true. Those who live with them long well know them well. I visited my grandpa a month ago in his dying state at age of 89 in the province of Cotabato where i spent my childhood. "Muslims want war, it's in their blood". I could never forget what grandpa says who lived he's entire life in a province of many muslims community. Here in the south we have a legion called "ilaga" (meaning "rats" in my language), a group of armed christians who operates without the government support. This group was formed because nonmuslim communities are being harrased and attacked since ages. Here in my country we have the saying "isog ra nang muslim kon daghan" meaning "muslims are only brave when they are numerous". They play victim when they are the few but will become very aggressive when they are the majority. My country has always been plagues with endless peace talks and treaty but the muslims always break them. Fake peace treaty is justified in islamic faith, as what Muhammad did to the Meccans. Everyone knows in my island of Mindanao that it is dangerous for non-muslims to enter a muslim town or village. Yes, not all muslims are bad, i have muslim few friends, a muslim family even helped me with my college thesis. The problem is not the muslims per se. It is islam and its ideology, and a muslim person is an outlet of that ideology - to conquer, to dominate. Political correctness is a weakspot that this ideology will find it's way to penetrate.

We partook in Ramadan, celebrated certain religious holidays, welcomed our newborns in a muslim way, buried our dead in a muslim way but that was it. We didn’t read the Quran, we didn’t have a drive to convert people, we didn’t cover ourselves and we sure as hell didn’t want them religious nut-jobs to gain power. I married an American 24 years ago and live in U.S. My family didn’t demand he convert to Islam if he wants to marry me just as my husband never pressured me to convert to christianity. I recently converted to christianity by choice and my family didn’t disown me and actually joked and said they were expecting it much sooner.

Well, I actually liked the video because he had some fair points but I'm against the hypothesis drawn from it all because I've grown up myself in as many Muslim communities as one has fingers and I've seen many many extremes...it's too long of a topic to talk about but if you have a specific query, ill try my best to answer... I have a Muslim friend who is the kindest woman I know. Her family is very much in favor of Sharia Law, and she has had to run away from her parents and siblings because of how abusive her father has been in following their faith.
While she's the only Muslim I know, she is a moderate Muslim and has certainly been affected by the religion. She chooses to follow it without all the hate. I just hope she's safe.

I rlly like how PragerU stands for conservative thought and speaks up. But I think that these videos are biased and focus on one topic while hiding other influential factors.
I can approve most of these things BUT if that much muslims would support sharia than you would see sharia law in all these countries.
That means that Islam doesn't play such a big role as most western people think.
And the second thing I want to state is that there are also a lot of muslims who are really moderate. You picked extreme conservative muslim societies in your examples. Look at Lebanon, Syria (before the war), Turkey, all muslim countries in the Balkan. They are moderate. There where education fails (subsaharan, middle east) extreme political ideologies (including political Islam) can flourish.
Bad education is the problem, not Islam. Once bad education was the problem in Europe, when people where radical conservative christians there. Now there's more education and less radical conservative christians.
I totally agree with you, as a Muslim from Turkey, jihad and sharia concepts are not common among people. Most Muslims in Turkey believe that a secular understanding should be accepted in the country's administration.
