Just a note on the bag system comment. I hit up the dev and they responded "there is not because the tetromino shapes matter less than the colors. But you are more likely to get a useful color if you are losing... It's not like the game is giving you only the pieces you need. You basically just get 1 random re-roll for a better piece if you are losing."
So there is a seudo mercy system in place so it's not going to stomp you so hard.

Setris is the answer to the question, what if Tetris was effed up beyond all recognition. The answer is, still a pretty awesome game. It turns out that Tetris is the COVID of videogames. The more you try and mess with it the more this analogy falls apart. All I'm saying is that Every Indy game these days is improved by sand physics. That's what Noita taught me at least.
Setris is a java game published on itch.io by mslivo for the price of whatever you think it's worth. Personally I think it's worth a lot.
So yeah Tetris blocks in this game collapse into piles of sand. so there's going to be no wells for doing a tetris into, and there's no T-Spins or holds. This is classic tetris, if classic tetris was as stable as my employment prospects.
The rules are pretty easy, all you have to do is connect a single colour from the left hand edge of the screen with the right. Gravity is in full effect so once you destroy a row a cascade effect goes off, giving you the chance to pull off some pretty awesome combos. This really does feel like the perfect combonation of Puyo puyo tetris that puyo puyo tetris never bothered with.
Honestly if they wanted to skirt any potential lawsuits the block shapes are almost entirely arbitrary. Although if you replace the tetris blocks with I dunno, trumps face or something the novelty factor gets stripped away a bit. But it's such a solid game that I feel like it should be able to stand on it's own two feet without the clout of tetris to piggy back on.
There are 3 game modes and 5 difficulty settings. The difficulty changes the well depth and cranks the speed for maximum butt tightening while playing. I'd rate my butt at duck levels of tightness while playing the harder difficulties.

I would not put this game in the same category as the many versions of Tetris. Those are all the same game, with different rules and goals. This. Is sand.

I don't like sand. It's coarse, and rough, and irritating, and it gets everywhere.

@@bigrathole Yeah, this felt legit on par with most of the creators I watch. You should definitely consider making the low-fi version; it could be superb algorithm bait (plus, I'd vibe to it) :P
P.S. If you talked a bit slower to match the rhythm and made your usual sardonic commentary over the low-fi, I bet that would actually sound pretty sick too. Or maybe that's just a gag to sneak into another video 😂

This is why I am a proponent of the "Tetrish" genre
The specific phrasing I came up with to define the Tetrish genre is as follows
A polygonal-tile or object based game wherein the player controls the "landing position" of an object _through continual guidance_ as it descends from a single direction.
The player scores by removal of grouped tiles from the playspace based on a clearly defined "removal rule".
Titles in the Tetrish genre include:
Tetris
Dr Mario
Puyo Pop
Not Tetris
Anode
Tetris Hell
There are several examples of games that utilise tetrominos or fit some of the Tetrish definitions, but are not Tetrish titles.
This includes

Bejeweled is a tile swapping game
Don't forget Pentris
Its a real mind bender, but incredibly fun once you figure it out! And its also very similar to the OG Tetris

This seems like itll be up there with Not Tetris 2, which adds a bit of bouncy physics to the blocks. (The lines have to be around 95 percent filled to dissapear, which slices the pieces up. Slamming a block into the pile might squish a layer below just enough to trigger some removals but can also spray blocks up into the air to cause problems)

nice video! the game reminds me somewhat of Not Tetris 2 from a while back - similar idea in that the blocks obey actual physics, but in that case they're still solid blocks that rotate freely and the line clears work more like classic Tetris. crazy to think that these bizarre spins on Tetris have been their own genre for like a decade now, if not more.

If you like this, you should also try Not Tetris. It's Tetris, but instead of being grid-aligned, you can rotate the pieces any angle you like aand drop them anywhere you like as well. It's very fun!

This game is a perfect example of how innovation is sometimes simpler than expected.
Very few pixels and very few colours, I see this as a perfect opportunity to port this to the Game Boy Color!

I would like to point out that the Tetris blocks are not copyrighted, and they'll likely uncopyrightable, As they are a general math concept known as a tetramino (which are only seven of if you count mirrors separately), which are themselves a subcategory of polyminos. Top rating them would be like copyrighting dominos, or a polygon of a specific side number.
Yah, I talk about the block shape but really it was supposed to be about just the piggy backing off the general IP. In fact a few days after I posted the review the game got DMCA'd by the Tetris company. I think it may have been the straight lifting of the music that might have been the nail in the coffin. The new linked version strips off any trouble spots.

I heard about this game before. Glad to know it actually does well. By any chance have you heard of a game called 'Brok the Investigator'? It's a combination beat 'em up and point and click adventure game. It takes place in a dystopian setting where humans died out long ago and animals evolved and took their place. You play as Brok, a gator detective in the Slums just trying to make ends meet for him and his stepson. The developer even made an accessibility patch that lets blind people play it. It may be worth giving a try some day.
