IN TNG you see Starbase 74 not Earth space-dock. Some sources claim Starbase 74 is the largest Federation structure at roughly 3 times the size of Earth Space-dock.
I was re-watching TMP the other day, and realized the space station there is the original model for the Regula 1, but flipped upside down and without the pillars.
Spacedock tops the chart here! - I completely agree. I like the mushroom profile, the bonkers scale but most of all I really dig the fact you can park a dozen starships inside it!
again another great episode and I agree the Earth space dock should be number one. I also agree that earth space dock would have more than one entrance as if there was ever an emergency and they needed to launch all the ships one door would become a bottleneck pretty quickly.
the fact of Samuel having DS9 as #4 actualy is quite good but I have a notable point for that pick. My honorable mention is related to DS9s abandoned duplicate Empok Nor.
Nice choices. I would also include the automated alien repair station depicted in Enterprise. Great adaptable design and rebuilds itself against damages.
I have always liked K-7 the best followed by the JJ-Verse starbase. Even though I don't like JJ-Verse ships as well as prime universe ships, the station just looks right. It seems closer to TOS designs. I wish this one was in the real trek universe!
1. Earth Space Dock 2. DS9 3. Jupiter Station 4. Starbase 173/375/257 (basically Regular 1, without the botanical tanks) 5. Utopia Planitia space station
My list is #5 Jupiter Station #4 Hirogen Training Facility #3 Caretakers Array #2 Unicomplex #1 Deep Space 9 aka Terrok Nor Honorable Mentions K-7 and Earth Spacedock
saquist That's why I put it at number 5, I was struggling to think of any and I like how it takes some elements from K7 with the saucer shapes but the main part is a sphere. I think it's quite interesting if you look in more detail, but not as interesting as DS9 etc.
No. For the umpteenth time. Sometimes there are 10, depends on the subject. I would like to actually hear 10 on canon starbase a with out stretching. Most of what we discuss has limited choices. So sometimes 5 is even stretching it. And it's my 5 and his 5. So that makes 10.
+Trekyards Sometimes both of you have 10 completely different and unique picks, yes, but even there are two top 5s and not one top 10. I understand why you do two top 5s and i think that this is how it should be, but the title is misleading.
I’d like to see a series called Star Trek StarBase one set in 2381 around a newer earth space station identical to earth space dock but 4 times the size, and a sovereign class starship called the USS California NCC-76656 reassigned from deep space exploration to a similar role that the uss defiant no-74205 filled at deep space nine and give an explanation in dialogue that the old earth space dock was decommissioned in 2301 and disassembled, the new one began construction in 2311 and completed and Christened in 2361 with the same design but upscaled to 4 times larger with 4 times the deflector shield capacity up to 22 million TeraJoules and outfitted with 96 high yield 22 million Terawatt phaser banks with 2000 beam emitters, 40 photon torpedo launchers with 40,000 photon torpedoes then the old earth space dock
The original Ralph McQuarrie Enterprise design for Star Trek the motion picture can be seen in the background. Only the rear half just a little Easter egg
+saquist well memory beta is non cannon but I have to say it does give an explanation that would seem logical given the federations hippie credentials check out the link memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Earth_Spacedock although it does seem odd that a massive military installation like space dock would be unarmed also thinking about it it's always looked like it's in low earth orbit and that is a recipe for disaster if you ask me.
That kind of station couldn't exist in LEO without constantly accounting for atmospheric drag. From the image the station is either in High MEO or low HEO. It's likely the heart of Earth's Planetary defense grid.
+saquist I think meo looks and sounds about right but that isn't my problem with that thing. 1 as demonstrated loads of times in Star Trek security doesn't seem to really be a big priority we have seen starships and indeed space stations taken over by hostile aliens so why would you build such a massive facility in orbit of your capital world when someone or something could take it over and merely crash it into earth like some huge comet with several starships snd there fully functional warp cores inside rendering earth uninhabitable for the long term. 2 I know in the 21st century we have military bases near large population centres all the time but in the time of Star Trek why would you put a fat target like that in orbit of earth when you could put it up next to the moon just as easily. 3 why put it near earth when any alien spy can see what starships are coming and going by simply peering through a telescope. I would put it either between the sun and Mercury where the Suns glare
+saquist would prevent people seeing it or out in the Kuiper belt where it can be passed off as a lump of ice 3 why go to all the trouble of building it from scratch in the first place when you could essentially grab an asteroid and hollow it out
My top DS9 Jupiter Romulan/Species 8472 station Earth Starbase (tough choice) Klingon station, K-7, or Cardassian/Dominion shipyards. Though there is 100s to 1000s of them, how about; Top 5 Fan Designs (?) or Top 5 Books (?)
+Obe Mossop That would be great...I definately like the NX-01 bridge the best along with the rest of its interior design. Worst bridge? Which do you think?
+Mark Bernero I quite like the bridge of the USS Defiant (NX-74205), and a close second would be the USS Prometheus (NX-59650) ...worst bridge USS Sutherland (NCC-72015)
The other doors idea doesn't work. The space station and the ships both appear the same size in the shots despite the D being way larger than the original enterprise. If it was the original space station, then it should appear much smaller relative to the size of the D. The original space station not only didn't have big enough doors to fit the D, the station itself is probably too small to even fit the ship inside. The doors would essentially have to bigger than the hull to fit the D (bow chick bow wow). So it must've been a much, much larger station built to accommodate the new ship sizes in TNG as they maintained the same relative size of the station compared to the newer enterprise.
I'd pick DS9. Prefer the skeletal symmetry to the giant metal mushrooms of Starfleet. Starfleet makes everything so bulbus and utilitarian. Need fewer scientists and more artists. ;)
SB 1 out in the Solar System. Space Docks around Earth, Mars, and Possibly around one or two of Jupiter's Moons? Phobos and Demos Moons of Mars used as maintenance facilities?
Wow you guys only did Federations and their are much better designs. 1-Starbase 74 2-The Caretakers Array 3-Borg Unicomplex 4-Deep Space Nine 5-Utopia Plantia Offices Honorable Mention: Ba'neth space station
+Toasty 9399 (ToastyTop) well pretty much im not sure about that. But perhaps the one that got destroyed was either a duplicate or a booby trapped version. Were as its counterpart Empok Nor to me is just as unique. since there DS9 and Empok Nor both share the same cardassian design.
The automated repair station that we see in Enterprise is my favorite.
IN TNG you see Starbase 74 not Earth space-dock. Some sources claim Starbase 74 is the largest Federation structure at roughly 3 times the size of Earth Space-dock.
I love how you guys always tease about JJ universe stuff as being your no. 1 pick. Cracks me up. lol
I was re-watching TMP the other day, and realized the space station there is the original model for the Regula 1, but flipped upside down and without the pillars.
I'm quite fond of the 8472 training station.
what about the Borg unicomplex, that should count as a space station.
Thank you! That's my favorite as well.
That one's also cool. I personally also like the klingon space stations around Ty'Gokor and the Terrasphere of species 8472.
This is not a top ten list when you have two top fives jumbled together with repeating selections.
Spacedock tops the chart here! - I completely agree. I like the mushroom profile, the bonkers scale but most of all I really dig the fact you can park a dozen starships inside it!
again another great episode and I agree the Earth space dock should be number one.

the fact of Samuel having DS9 as #4 actualy is quite good but I have a notable point for that pick.
My honorable mention is related to DS9s abandoned duplicate Empok Nor.
There was heavy use of the 'earth Spacedock' in ST Bridge Commander. You could even fly out manually.
1. Earth Space Dock
2. McKinley Station
3. Regula 1
4. Jupiter Station
5. JJ Verse Space Dock/Starbase 1
I would of had the alien repaired station from enterprise on my list
Me too
I liked Epsilon IX from TMP because it its sheer fractal-looking complexity.
I like K-7 as well, looks like a nice place to be.
Nice choices. I would also include the automated alien repair station depicted in Enterprise. Great adaptable design and rebuilds itself against damages.
My top 5 is:
1. Spacedock
2. DS9
3. Jupiter Station
4. Regula 1
5. K-7
I have always liked K-7 the best followed by the JJ-Verse starbase. Even though I don't like JJ-Verse ships as well as prime universe ships, the station just looks right. It seems closer to TOS designs. I wish this one was in the real trek universe!
My favorite space station design would have to be the one from DS9 since that's my number one show.
Same, also like the cardassian repair space station design seen in season 6 I think, or the klingon space stations around Ty'Gokor
1. Earth Space Dock
2. DS9
3. Jupiter Station
4. Starbase 173/375/257 (basically Regular 1, without the botanical tanks)
5. Utopia Planitia space station
will you do a top ten fan made deck plans for canon ships and thin for non canon ships?
Mc Kinley station " We'll give you a hand in space."
Just realized how much the space station looks like cloud city from Star Wars.
You guys should really take turns.
I think so too
I think they could totally refilm DS9 and use the Kardashians in place of the Cardasians.
+TwistedSister/Haratiofales Well, it's about time Star Trek differentiated aliens by ass shape instead of head.
LOL, very true.
I know you love DS9 Cap, but is it your favorite series over TOS? Or in addition to TOS? DS9 is my favorite, followed very closely by TNG and TOS.
subspace relay station 47, amargosa stellar observatory (technically a station), DS9, Earth spacedock and i guess k-7
I recommend Raul Mamoru's Starbase for a 3D model. :)
My list is #5 Jupiter Station #4 Hirogen Training Facility #3 Caretakers Array #2 Unicomplex #1 Deep Space 9 aka Terrok Nor Honorable Mentions K-7 and Earth Spacedock
Enterprise era repair station?
The automated one that stole crew members was an interesting design.
ST-TMP. The research station base that is being constructed way out there that is destroyed by V'ger.
Another interesting trek yards top 10.
how about a top 10 on Starfleet Admirals or re-occurring cannon characters
PS: I like Mr Drexter DS9 redesign.
There aren't that many space stations in the shows, it must have been a hard list to trim down.
Before I watch I will list my top 5
5 - JJ-verse Space Dock
4 - Deep Space K7
3 - Earth Space Dock
2 - Regula 1
1 - Deep Space 9/Terok Nor
+Mork_of_Ork2001 I found the JJ-verse Dock rather ordinary
saquist That's why I put it at number 5, I was struggling to think of any and I like how it takes some elements from K7 with the saucer shapes but the main part is a sphere. I think it's quite interesting if you look in more detail, but not as interesting as DS9 etc.
+saquist It's based on the Franz Joseph starbase design from the classic Star Fleet Technical Manual ... so that makes it instantly cool.
Also what about Vanguard? Or are those Novels non-canon? :)
Is the ISS cannon since it is in the intro to Enterprise?
You guys should change the name from top 10's to top 5's. I kind of expect 10 completely different stations. But you guys basically chose the same 5.
No. For the umpteenth time. Sometimes there are 10, depends on the subject. I would like to actually hear 10 on canon starbase a with out stretching. Most of what we discuss has limited choices. So sometimes 5 is even stretching it. And it's my 5 and his 5. So that makes 10.
+Trekyards 2 top 5s are not one top 10. I also agree that you should change the name to trekyards top 5s.
+Stanimir Georgiev nope not happening. Sorry. Because sometimes it is a top 10.
+Trekyards Sometimes both of you have 10 completely different and unique picks, yes, but even there are two top 5s and not one top 10. I understand why you do two top 5s and i think that this is how it should be, but the title is misleading.
+Stanimir Georgiev meh. Not changing it, but thanks for the suggestion.
DS9 is my favorite space station
Great lists. However I think I would have gone Starbase 375 over Regula. Basically same design, just way bigger.
Shame ESD gets wrecked twice in the space of 12 months, first by Species 8472 in early 2410 and by the Iconians at the Battle of Sol later that year
I may be having a video solving the ST5 turboshaft problem, that will turn our understanding of ship design upside down.
Why was the Yorktown Station dismissed so. I've seen the Earth Space Dock type, how this compared to Lya Station Alpha. In size and personally.
what was that about original enterprise in the earth spacedock???
The original Ralph McQuarrie Enterprise design for Star Trek the motion picture can be seen in the background. Only the rear half just a little Easter egg
oh never noticed that... must have been blinded by the refit
+filigrant well the refit is a far superior design after all. Lol.
"From 'Trials_and_Tribble-ations'"? Don't you mean "The Trouble with Tribbles"? Though it was reused in the DS9 episode you referenced, Captain.
Love me Starbase 47 Vanguard from the book series.
Space dock is unarmed according to memory beta but was designed to have massive phaser banks
+Joe Riley No there is no way a station that large is unarmed and DS9 is armed to the teeth.
Stop referencing bad fanon.

My top
DS9
Jupiter
Romulan/Species 8472 station
Earth Starbase
(tough choice) Klingon station, K-7, or Cardassian/Dominion shipyards.
Though there is 100s to 1000s of them, how about;
Top 5 Fan Designs (?)
or
Top 5 Books (?)
Suggestion: top 10 bridges/command centres
+Obe Mossop That would be great...I definately like the NX-01 bridge the best along with the rest of its interior design. Worst bridge? Which do you think?
+Mark Bernero I quite like the bridge of the USS Defiant (NX-74205), and a close second would be the USS Prometheus (NX-59650) ...worst bridge USS Sutherland (NCC-72015)
Spacedock, DS9, Jupiter, then I pick fan art where you have the Massive Omni, then one done by Hammakuvala (Sp?)
McKinkey station looks like a head crab from Half Life...
Favorite station is the TMP dry dock
What about Epelon in St 4 the voyage home?
ypu gorgot yorktown its possibly the most beautiful space station design in my books
Look at the upload date. "Beyond" wasn't out yet, when that video was released.
The other doors idea doesn't work. The space station and the ships both appear the same size in the shots despite the D being way larger than the original enterprise. 1. Deep Space 9
2. Earth Spacedock
3. Deep Space K-7
4. Regula 1
5. Jupiter Station
So it is really a top 6 list.
Is that mutiny I hear from the kid?
I'd pick DS9. Prefer the skeletal symmetry to the giant metal mushrooms of Starfleet. Starfleet makes everything so bulbus and utilitarian. Need fewer scientists and more artists. ;)
You call it Deep Space Nine, but some of us prefer to call it "Terok Nor". No luv for ST Enterprise Yosemite Station?
How about Yorktown Starbase 😀
Jar Jar Verse. Something so large Star Ships can fly around in and have Fast and Furious type Races? Nope.
Top 10 (Cannon) Starfleet Bridges! Top 10 (Non Cannon) Starfleet Bridges.
No Unicomplex?
Commoner, Earth Spacedock. ISN'T Starbase 1, that's well into deep space
SB 1 out in the Solar System. Space Docks around Earth, Mars, and Possibly around one or two of Jupiter's Moons? Phobos and Demos Moons of Mars used as maintenance facilities?
Top 10 phasers
you know...this list is kinda laughably onesided since ESD is the iconic spacedock (outside of DS9,K7 and a few others)
K7 has nipples?
Wow you guys only did Federations and their are much better designs.
1-Starbase 74
2-The Caretakers Array
3-Borg Unicomplex
4-Deep Space Nine
5-Utopia Plantia Offices
Honorable Mention: Ba'neth space station
DS9 AT NO4!
Not exactly top 10 if you both have the same ones on you top five lists.
.
Sleek, the new design asthetic
So you have the option of putting any space station in Trek on this list and it ends up being a top 6. Come on guys. Broaden your horizons.
you guys just spoiled ds9 fir me >:( why'd you say it got destroyed :( anyways, good video
Only in the books. Not official canon. Sorry, but if you haven't seen the series by now we claim no responsibility for spoilers on Trekyards
+Trekyards Im on the 6th season, i watched all the other shows including TNG VOY ENT
first comment, just with no reason
Deep Space Nine is only number 4!!!!!!! Blasphemy!!! It should be at least top three!!!
And yet, there we are. Lol.
