  • Many New Atheist types use the example of the evil eye to typify superstitious ideas and social behaviour that is irrational. I try to explain the manner in which something like the evil eye can make sense to a modern person.

A trip in the poor neighborhoods on the Balkans can show you how seriously people take someone looking at someone in the wrong way. If you walk up to someone and tell them "Why are you looking at me like that?" you are bound to get into a fight, even though they might have not even noticed you. That's how serious it is for people.

I feel like it's also worth remembering that if somebody is giving you the evil eye glaring at you is probably not the only bad thing they're doing towards you. People talk and up and take other actions against each other that are too small and settle for even them to be consciously aware of. Malice is a really powerful force even if it's so repressed that a dirty look is the only overt manifestation of it.

    • @raypatson3970
      @raypatson3970 2 роки тому +3

That's not the same. Evil eye is not the same as cold shoulder or death stare. It exists in other cultures like Islam and Hinduism as well. Hindus believe Evil Eye specially emanates from negative emotions like jealously and envy. In a populated and close knit community someone's gaze filled with envy or jealously can cause them to rob you or to gossip about you and destroy your reputation or sabotage you.
Instagram and social media is a cesspit to that. People are flashing "perfect life" to others and others feel jealousy, envy, shame, etc. Those negative emotions are like a curse that can eventually come back to bite those who have no humility and flash their wealth or health in a egoistic way. And more often than not, a disaster strikes them and they lose what others envy.

Did you do something to deserve that look? Are you not to be trusted? They now have a suspicion (no matter how mild) about you which could effect their interactions with you in the future. The evil eye can be applied to a narcissist or psychopath stare. Communities that are more social in person may unconsciously or inherently have the ability to detect evil people and not necessarily evil due to one's past, but because of genetics that cause them to be more cold or self centered. Hence a narcissist or psycopath living in a community.

In narcissistic abuse, this is called gaslighting. You make the victim wonder what they did to get those looks, ("did I offend them? how? what did I do to warrant that?") and then block them from resolving the situation, bring in some "flying monkeys" to confuse and destroy them further. I have seen this happen in a work situation. The victim of this 'look' may be triggered to fight back, and then will be accused of being 'crazy.' This is so common and people have their lives destroyed because someone chooses them to target. It goes way beyond bullying, and the victim cannot report "she looked at me funny" or "no one will talk to me" to HR. In one case, the narcs would stand behnd a person who was seated working, and just look at the back of their head with disgust, and others would notice. If the person being stared at "felt the look' and turned to see, the others would avert their eyes. Crazymaking evil making every day an utter hell.

You should be very careful of the evil eye sometimes those who stare you straight in the eye are trying to figure you out and are speculating you through previous negative misconcieved prejudice assumptions about who you are whislt not really seeing the real you and still maintaining an intense cold stare filled with hatred.

One has to remember that the ancient Greeks thought that the eyes emitted rays. Plutarch's scientific explanation stated that the eyes were the chief, if not sole, source of the deadly rays that were supposed to spring up like poisoned darts from the inner recesses of a person possessing the evil eye. Plutarch treated the phenomenon of the evil eye as something seemingly inexplicable that is a source of wonder and cause of incredulity. Pliny the Elder described the ability of certain African enchanters to have the "power of fascination with the eyes and can even kill those on whom they fix their gaze". So the "evil eye" has a direct relationship with mesmerism/hypnotism.
The phallic charm called fascinum in Latin, from the verb fascinare, "to cast a spell" (the origin of the English word "fascinate") is one example of an apotropaic object used against the evil eye. They have been found throughout Europe and into the Middle East from contexts dating from the first century BC to the fourth century AD. The phallic charms were often objects of personal adornment (such as pendants and finger rings), but also appeared as stone carvings on buildings, mosaics, and wind-chimes (tintinnabula). Examples of stone phallic carvings, such as from Leptis Magna, depict a disembodied phallus attacking an evil eye by ejaculating towards it.
In the Aegean Region and other areas where light-colored eyes are relatively rare, people with green eyes, and especially blue eyes, are thought to bestow the curse, intentionally or unintentionally. So watch out .. I've got bright blue eyes! lol.
Among those who do not take the evil eye literally, either by reason of the culture in which they were raised or because they simply do not believe it, the phrase, "to give someone the evil eye" usually means simply to glare at the person in anger or disgust. The term has entered into common usage within the English language. Within the broadcasting industry it refers to when a presenter signals to the interviewee or co-presenter to stop talking due to a shortage of time.

Oh the evil eye is real and powerful. The way people see you, that influences on the conscious and subconscious levels, communicates to others that they have at least the eyers permission to attack, it gets conspiracies started, and changes how you view them back and where that whole relationship goes, often toward tragedy. Consider Cassius looking lean and hungry in Shakespeare.

Appreciate this. I first encountered the ancient notion of evil eye in my mid-twenties during a short mission trip to Equatorial Guinea. Upon my return home, I read "Death by Envy" by Fr. George R. A. Aquaro. Those greatest afflicted by the evil eye are those who cast rather than those targeted. Although ancient ideas about the evil eye were bound up in misinformation regarding the nature of sight, Pageau does a wonderful job of explaining how the psychological effects of "viewing people" can affect both the viewer and viewee in a profoundly real and spiritual sense. I believe I exhibit extremely mild manifestations of scopophobia of which the evil eye explains quite easily.

If you're coming at a subject with innate bias towards it, you're not going to add anything to the conversation. He thinks he's being objective, when he isn't. Also I wonder if he knows that his religious materialism which he at once hates and adheres to comes out of the enlightenment which he at once worships and knows little of.

It is a sort of magic. I do tons of hiring for big teams... When someone wears a nice aesthetically pleasing suit to a job interview, I not only remember them but I think to the level of attention to detail they put into dressing well. Tells me more about them than all the phrases/catchphrases/buzzwords/keywords they memorized and parroted out. And people who pay attention to details tend to do well in a lot of difficult jobs actually. There are people blessed with interview skill and communication/social skills, and they sometimes do horrible in jobs where work needs to be done.

The impact of social rejection or ostrastasiation is even more potent in a soceity which is only made up of those immediately sorrounding you. To go through something like that may be a fate worse than death, which is likely why the doctrine of forgiveness and theosis is so central to the Christian belief structure.
Today with the internet there are whole communities structured online, the physical from and their relationship don't have the impact that they used to.
It'd be interesting to go further into the comparison between social rejection and purity spiralling, I think there's room for deep theological rumination in that topic.

This is so wild. I had a dream that pointed this out to me, saying what my “talisman” was. I had been using it for years in that capacity without even knowing it or what a talisman was. I recently had another dream that dealt with the evil eye. I was scared to do something because a man would “put the evil eye on me” if I did it but it felt inevitable. Later I placed something near the man and he was frozen, wouldn’t interact with me. I now realize that was another talisman.
I’ve been blown away at how my dreams have been directing me and clarify what I’m confused about. And the more I delve into the symbolism through various avenues, and especially exploring Christianity after years of being atheist, the clearer the lessons/messages become.

Hey Jonathan, I want to tell you something that I notice in United State. I went there to work (Im from Venezuela) and, I spent 1 year there. I begin to notice how white people talk and give order to blacks on places like McDonalds, Chick Fill A or Wendys to gain exactly what they want and FAST.... For me, its was captivating, I never saw that skills before and I started to implement those behaviors to get what I wanted. (You have to look them directly in the eyes, with a subtle smile like Im better than you and talk fast) Trust me, they would understand that attiude.
So I remember, that I went with my mother to fast food restaurant and I told her: "Look mother, look this technique that I learned from whites americans" then, a black girl was taking my order but with a bad attitude (Customer Service its the worst job), then I started to behave like those white people, and the lady literally put they head down with FEAR cause I KNOW, she recognize it. I felt so bad with myself and my mother told me:
"Bryan, stop doing that. Poor girl, dont transform yourself in those kind of people".
I was acting with evilness and then, I give her a tip and told her "So sorry beautiful, take your tip".
I tried the same thing in my country, but for some reason doesn't work as good as there.

Don’t know if this is the same in other cultures, but in Mexico we call it “El Mal de Ojo”.
It’s not the evil eye. Rather; “The Malice of the Eye”
The way we always describe it is you can cause harm on others by the way you project emotions onto people through your stare.
My grandmother had banned my toddler sister from the kitchen because she had apparently looked at the food weird, making the taste off.
Obviously my sister didn’t intend to do this, but it’s safe to say that her stare distracted my grandmother while cooking, and the food suffered for it.

The former can be insulting, threatening, or provoking, but the later can devastate you without transmitting any sense of insult or aggression to the person being 'evil-eyed'. Even benign looks can have hidden evil energy.

I've said this for years. It doesn't matter whether you personally believe in a curse; when your community does, the consequences will be pretty dire if you're considered to be under one.
This sort of magical thinking is present in the most secular of self-proclaimed rationalists, because living mythology is much harder to discern given it's the essential apparatus for how we discern anything at all. Compare the myth of the 'alpha male', a theory long since disavowed by the animal behaviorist who coined the term, yet wholly adopted into our culture as a means of bullying and devaluing others.

Aboriginal Australians have 'pointing the bone'.
A vendetta arises and a person known to posses the ability to curse others will be sent out to 'point the bone' at the transgressor.
This is widely reputed to be fatal, and nursing staff are trained to deal with the accursed when admitted during their death throws.
In 1987 I was watching an amateur football match in outback Australia when the hundreds of spectators suddenly fled.
A Kurdaitcha man ( a bone pointer wearing slippers of feathers blood and human hair) had been spotted in town.
It appeared to me 'nobody was without sin' ha!

The fact that Christians don't wear them doesn't make them better or worse, or of much or little faith. The picture of the evil eye has a hand - seemingly with two hands over it. I've considered this symbol and wondered this - is the true nature of an evil eye that God the Father would see our sins through the scars in Jesus's palms and then judge us for them?
We accept Jesus, His sacrifice, we are baptized and are new creations, but then at some point in our walk forward, we fail. Whether in thought or deed... are those failures seen? Are we still covered, or will the eye see through us...
Is it a symbol attempting to say: "Jesus's sacrifice was not enough". This... this to me would be true evil.
