In this lesson, we review core physics concepts involving electric fields, magnetic fields, relativity, and quantum mechanics. Each of these phenomena are explained in simple terms and with practical examples.
We discuss the concept of how magnetic and electric fields are very similar to each other and how modern physics has unified them into a single theory.
We give an introduction to time dilation in special relativity along with quantized energy levels in quantum mechanics.

Hi, thanks for this awesome series of lectures! I've been trying to understand relativity from this video and some others. The way I understand it so far, is that your perception of time passing on the lightspeed-travelling clock would be the same, since the speed of the light reflecting from the clock's surface into your eyes still wouldn't be any faster or slower than its speed of motion (i.e. the speed of light both ways). But when you return to Earth to the person with the inert clock, the time would disagree between the clocks because the time and space of the lightspeed clock became relative to its inert frame of reference (the lightspeed rocket) and I guess that's where gravitational force comes into play (between the clock and the rocket). From an earlier lecture in this series, gravity exists between any two bodies of mass, and here you add that time & space are relative to your speed of motion. Can you tell me if I'm grasping the overall idea correctly?

I am not a scientist. Like you, I learn most of my knowledge from videos like this. I am very happy that you are trying to learn, but someone has to tell you that your explanation is not correct. For starters, you are mixing General Relativity and Special Relativity in the same question. They have completely different formulas and effects. I can't try to explain it all here in this post. I would strongly encourage you to look up more videos about Special Relativity. For now, you should try to ignore General Relativity. By the way, standing on earth is not an inert frame of reference, as you claimed, instead, it's an accelerating frame of reference. All people standing on earth feel acceleration against their feet the same way that they would feel acceleration if they were standing in a rocket with its engines turned on. This is what Einstein called the key to his own understanding of General Relativity. Gravity and acceleration are equivalent ideas. I encourage you to study Special Relativity first. Best wishes.

I like these videos and Master Gibson, but I have one specific issue (which is what brought me here in the first place).
In all the examples I've seen, heard, or read about regarding time & traveling at near speed-of-light, two "clocks" are used. I see a problem with that right out of the gate.
"It isn't because the clocks are broken," Gibson says, and I'm confident the clocks are reliable for what they do. But when you take away the second clock and use one common "clock" - the earth going around the sun, for example - the argument of relative time seems to fall apart.
We've all heard about our twin who launches across the universe at near speed-of-light, and how we age differently than our twin. But earth goes around the sun once, and that's one year for both. It goes around ten times, and that's ten years. A million times, a million years. Using one common clock, time is the same for everyone no matter where they are or how fast they travel. If we age more or less than our twin during the same period of time displayed by our common "clock," it must be the aging process that's different, not time itself.
So in the two-clock examples, yes, the clocks are not "broken," but they are certainly affected by traveling at such unimaginable speeds plus the effects of gravity. The clocks show different times, but not because time changes. It must be the use of multiple clocks.
In the case of the jet experiments, or the GPS satellites (not mentioned in this video), the onboard clocks would surely be affected by the speed and gravity (being in an orbit farther than the earth-based clocks, therefore lower gravitational pull).
I believe the world has misunderstood some of Einstein's claims made in special relativity. It's possible that Einstein himself, known to have had a vivid imagination, misunderstood a few things himself (I'm not betting on this, though).
Having said all that, I'm here as a rookie to try to understand, and maybe even explain, exactly why this doesn't add up.

You dont have to speed a clock to the speed of light to be diferent in time with another clock, if you take it inside a flying plane it would be diferent by fractions of a second to another clock that is clicking at the same time on ground level. This experiment has been done over and over with the same result.
