    I'm glad that 3DFX made so many spare chips, back when they did. Since they only essentially invented a single infinitely-scalable processor, their only plan was to keep increasing chip counts and miniaturizing, without updating the key architecture. That's why they immediately fell behind, on the shader updates. While competition rewrote texture routines, their chips could only go faster, but not do new things. I have a ton of Voodoo's, with 5500 being the highest. I'm cooling off on retro, since spare time is always in short supply, but I'll still watch videos of people trying things with their 3DFX chips. I hope my 5500 lasts. I can reflow chips, but I hate doing it, since there is always a chance of something going wrong, especially with IC's that big. $700+ may seem like a high price tag for a prebuilt product, but what you're buying is the guarantee that some solder bridge you didn't notice, when building your own thing, doesn't take out your GPU and your motherboard along with it. I'm a professional, and still, any time I can save a few hours and get a pre-tested build, I'll go for it, no matter the cost. I don't want risk. I want the end product.

      Yep - the amount of 3dfx spare chips circling around the internet amazes me. From the original up to V5 - anyone with a certain degree can redesign, revamp and even resell these. I just wish there where models released with faster memory, perhaps binned chips.

      "since spare time is always in short supply" this, and it feels like it gets worse as I get older. I have a mountain of old hardware I never get to enjoy. Those newly built Voodoos are very appealing. I still have my original Voodoo 2 from 1998 along with the 200MMX. I bought a bunch more Voodoo hardware off ebay 15 years ago before the "vintage computing" category made all the prices shoot up.

      I had a Pentium 233 in 1997 and an S3 Virge video card. Meanwhile, a friend of mine had a Pentium 75 + Voodoo 1 card - and he was showing me GLQuake on his PC... and I was like: "Aaaaaaaaa..." Bottom line - he was having a better gaming experience, at least in Quake because that P75 was no fun with titles like Quake 2 or Unreal...

    I remember pulling the trigger on a voodoo 1 back in 1998 with 6mb of vram. Unfortunately the card did not work, 3dfx GPU and ( can't remember the 2d chip on it, alliance semiconductor? ) both 2d and 3d chips were seperate and incompatible, leading to a defective line of voodoo 1 cards. Did not know this at the time of purchase and could not get a refund for whatever reason. Kept using the diamond monster 3dfx card with 4mb ram. That was a good solid card!

    • @O_mores

      A Voodoo 1 in 1998 still was a enjoyable pick for 3D acceleration. Going from 320x240 software rendering (almost Minecraft style graphics...) to 640x480 with smooth textures and double FPS was a great experience...

  • @TheRetroRaven
    @TheRetroRaven Місяць тому +2

    With Voodoo 1, some games support 512x384, which gives you a bit better performance compared to 640x480 and with very little loss in "fidelity" (graphics).
    I recommend trying the original retail release of Unreal (not Unreal Gold which uses the more demand and upgraded engine from Unreal Tournament).
    Enjoy!

    • @O_mores
      @O_mores  Місяць тому

      Yes, the only inconvenient with these HDMI Voodoo cards is that 512x384 is not a standard HDMI resolution so 512x384 most likely will display a blank screen over HDMI. Meanwhile, I managed to use the HDMI output with the help a cheap HDMI to USB adapter... And it looks good.
