- My mate Mike, who I mentioned in the previous upload, has, over the years supplied me with well over a thousand Philips N1500 and N1700 tapes, which he's often picked up when taking delivery of the hardware - his primary interest.
This is from one of his N1700 tapes which somehow I'd overlooked until yesterday. It's a bit of gem really, well - if you're a Wales and the West fan. An afternoon in 1978, coming out of an edition of Crown Court, several interesting adverts, (including one of those curious Ronco devices) and an in-vision continuity spot featuring the great Mike Prince, who appropriately enough, presents an edition of HTV West's Women Only.
The recording of Women Only is the complete edition. Unfortunately, the recording stops immediately after the end credits, so we were denied more lovely presentation material.
I've worked out the date, but I won't spoil if for Robin. - Розваги
You always knew Christmas was coming in the 70s when there was at least one Ronco ad in every ad break :)
I wouldn't mind giving that Bird in the perfume ad an Aviance night.
Remember one day over Christmas 1979, maybe 26th or 28th December, Mike was seen on screens in Wales, heavy rain in Wales had brought flooding to Cardiff and I presume HTV decided it would be best just to have one announcer on duty rather than the normal two.
That tie
Mike Prince was 34 at the time. I don’t think I’ve ever recollected seeing him with hair of any colour other than a shade of grey!
I spoke too soon. Lotus did have one compilation album in the charts - the not-then-dubiously-named 'Ecstacy', number 24, October 1978 - and they released 'The Marty Robbins Collection' which hit number 5 in February 1979. The one flogged here, though, happily failed to trouble the scorers.
Never knew Mike Prince moonlighted for HTV!
Htv west signature card always freaked me out
Htv itv in the Era of James callaghan
love the 70s
Great to see another clip of Mike Prince at his best and that glorious HTV West aerial ident
Good to hear the Valeyard shilling for Tesco.
I remember the perfume advert, thanks for loading this up!
I thought I was only on in the Midlands
I hope you intend to upload all of the tapes....I'm loving the nostalgia.
I get 14/12/1978 too, from the Teletext present on the recording.
Was that Richard Williams' animation for the "Oh Happy Days" record? It looks like his work and I know he did a lot of commericials.
Has anyone else used the line about "The Perfect Christmas Gift" being short for "The Perfect Christmas Gift because no-one would buy it for themselves!"?

"He only came to read the meter."
Seemingly, Lotus was a sub-brand of K-Tel - presumably used for the more MOR, more Warwick-esque albums that could have damaged the K-Tel brand (which in those pre-Now days was the place to go for compilations of current hits). They may have been budget albums as well because none seem to appear in the Guinness Book of British Hit Albums (and successors).
Though I find it hard to hear "Oh Happy Day" now without thinking of Bruno Brookes playing it when the Tories won the 1992 election.
I want a spin slicer
OK, should anyone want to know (and if anyone questions my source, I think Gambo's been set up), Lotus also charted with the Tom Jones compilation 'I'm Coming Home' (number 12, October 1978), 'Both Sides of Dolly Parton' (number 45, November 1978), the Anthony Ventura Orchestra's 'Dream Lover' (number 44, January 1979), George Hamilton IV's 'Reflections' (number 25, February 1979), 'The Fantastic Sound of Klaus Wunderlich' (number 43, May 1979) and John Williams' 'Bridges' (number 5, June 1979).
Dang, that was so late-70s, the only thing missing was the disco ball!
There was a documentary done on bread and breakfasts in western, has anyone seen them if so please let me know. Thank you
Found it. Thursday 14th December 1978. Did you use the digitised issues of TV Times, Rory?
@stupidrubbish I wonder when the HTV continuity wallpaper changed to mottled bluey-grey :) ?
@Knightyknight72: It happened in Wales in 1979, so presume as the West continuity booth was in the same building that to would be done in 79 to. In Wales while it was being done, most continuity was out of vision with the announcer read news bulletins being done wherever they could.
Half pence?
