I did click on the article on not wearing shifts. It was absolutely delightful. And also a classic April Fools prank and an actual Rick roll. Haven't seen one of those for years!
I know people who have put a zip down the centre front for everyday use. Even easier and quicker to put on than a modern bra, and they're more comfortable!
I'm of the opinion that Regency stays are the best push up bras of any period, including the 1990s. And to beat out the Wonderbra is pretty impressive. Considering they hadn't done individual cups for hundreds of years before that, and only had the transitional stays as "practice", they got very good as pushing up, very quickly! I personally prefer long stays, but that's because I need a bit more back support and I like the smoothing of the tummy that they provide. But I would convert every bra wearer to some form of corsetry if I could, and Regency short stays are probably the easiest introduction.
Yeah it's so hard finding actual feedback on RT patterns even in videos, which is part of why I've loved your corset/stays series so far. They're really helpful in that regard so we get a heads up on sizing and possible issues that may arise. I haven't made a second mockup/final(?) of the RT shortstays but I definitely need to extend the bottom edge by a quarter inch at least, and I've already sized up the gussets. I think the optional drawstring at the bust shown in the pattern and adding in a short busk will definitely be necessary in my case to keep everything in place. It's super interesting to say the least, how these patterns can be adapted so widely across bodytypes with some relatively small adjustments
yeah i feel like they're one of the few pattern makers that doesnt have facebook group for feedback for some reason. lol i have to be honest i didnt read the instructions very thoroughly and completely missed the drawstring and busk option 😅 but the drawstring sounds very cute! and the busk would definitely help with more bust to hold up, i think i'm probably right on the edge of getting away without a busk
@@moth.faerie ..... I skim the instructions 😅 I only noticed the drawstring bit because of the pictures, and because it's at the end. Tbh I don't think the pattern actually offers a busk step, I just know I'm likely going to need one, even with better gussets. Huh, I wasn't even aware of fb corset groups. I usually avoid fb like the plague tho
@@sirencipher1932 i join a lot of sewing groups for individual brands so i can see what the patterns look like made by people who didnt develop the pattern!
I love this! I made a pair last year and they're super comfy. I accidentally made my mock up slightly too tight in the bust and the final was slightly too loose in the bust 🤦 but they were super fun to make and I wore it instead of a bra for months. This was actually the only Redthreaded pattern that worked well for me. I absolutely love your fabric choice, it looks fantastic.
Oh no ah I’ve had a few fitting mishaps lately that seem to maybe be down to fabric choice? Who knows lol. That’s interesting it was the only one that worked for you! Which other ones have you tried?
I'm currently working on my second pair of stays with this pattern! I made the first set two years ago without making any modifications to the pattern or even a mockup, and they didn't turn out very well. They were super uncomfortable and the straps kept falling off my shoulders. I have made several changes to the pattern for the second go, like raising the bust line a little and expanding the stays in a couple places, and doing my own finishes for the interior, because I didn't like the overcast edges being left exposed for the first one. I am almost done with them, and I am much happier so far! It was lovely to work on them while watching you work on the same pattern!
Yay for improvements! I'm glad you found ways to make it work for you 😊 I def also prefer seam finishes that aren’t overlocking for stays and corsets, it never feels like a durable enough finish for garments under so much stress!
Those are lovely stays! I bought that pattern too in preparation to do a Regency themed picnic with my friends. I'll keep you notes on the stays in mind when I make it! I'm planning on making a gothic/punk theme Regency outfit, because why not.
I found I had the true-ing issue on this pattern as well. When I checked the little scale square, they didn’t all match 1” (like if page 1 was 1”, then page 2 was 0.8”, and page 3 was 1.2” - made up numbers, but it was something to that effect) even when printed at the same time. I ended up printing each page individually and changing the printing scale to make the squares all the correct size, and that seemed to solve the issue.
Oh I only checked it on one page maybe that’s why it didn’t match up 😅 that’s so frustrating I feel like they should pay more attention to that for how much their patterns cost
I had that same issue! Some pages printed fine at 100% but others I had to do 105%. So strange. But even then, the back and side pieces don't come together perfectly. The instructions mention notches but I don't see any. I wondered for a minute if the side was reversed? I'm a true beginner so second guessing everything!
I ignored the squares alltogether and measured the seam alowances instead, since the actual length of those was given. I ended up printing everything at 105%
First video I've seen of yours, it is really nice. Also, thank you for cute "black hole"! Mine was found in my dad's truck motor when she was a small kitten and is almost 17yo. The siamese was from a hospital a used to do some work at, she had two litters (first had 3 and second had 5 making her look like a balloon with legs). After tricking some of the nurses into adopting her kittens I brought her home because she wouldn't let anyone else touch her and she's so small I was worried of her getting pregnant again.
Thanks for the heads-up about the pattern needing to be trued!! I was planning to order it when it came back in stock on her site, but I might just draft it from scratch instead. Excited to see your Regency dress when you get to it!! Would also love to see you tackle an S-curve Edwardian corset.
i'll add that to the list! lol i used to like drafting everything from scratch and now i just can't be bothered with the effort 😅 but if that works better for you you should go for it! it was a minor thing that needed to be trued tho so it was very quick!
@@moth.faerie Haha yeah, I feel that. I won't be considering drafting it from scratch if I didn't have access to PAD through school. So much faster and easier than manual drafting. But if it's only a slight bit of truing and the pattern comes back in stock soon, I might still order it.
I love your corset series! I want to make a pair of regency stays once I’m done with the corset I’m currently working on. I would love to watch a video on Aranea Black’s Edwardian Tulip Corset (plus I love the fact that her patterns are free)
Your videos are so nice to put on while I'm working on my own projects! The stays turned out so cute - I've had my eyes on one of the RT stays pattern for a while so thanks for the heads up about the pattern and the trueing. Definitely something to keep in mind. Great vid - thanks for being my rainy saturday sewing buddy XD
I am such musical theater trash because when she said "it's a really good place to start" when talking about the gores, my brain immediately went to the sound of music lol
Your stays came out super cute, love the little pink flowers. I've wanted to make short stays like this, the first ones I made were some 'lazy stays' that I sized up awfully years ago, and were kind of a bust. It's always nice to watch construction videos like this~.
Because of my weird sizing (34 H cup) I found the pattern to be un-useable as is. The 'cups' are three inches too short while the band was two inches too long. Because of the price, it was out of my budget to buy the sister sizes to try altering the pattern so I'm playing with it myself (which has proven a challenge.) I was really excited to use a short stay in place of my every bra because I heard a lot of larger chested women having success with it but I'm more tempted to make my own pattern as this point than to keep adjusting redthreaded's until it works. I don't fault them for not having my specific size (only ThirdLove bras have anything near what I need) but selling each size separately and at such a high price makes failing with this pattern a bit of a disappointment.
Thank you that was very informative. I have a few ideas how to fix my fit issues with the pattern I'm using... Can't wait to try it again in June. In the meantime I will live vicariously through your videos
Hi! Thank you once again for this interesting video😊 I enjoy watching you working. I made those stays as a"lockdown project" completely by hand two years ago. A good way to kill time 😅. I encountered the same length difference in the pattern pieces but as you said it was no big deal. The size is pretty good. Mine sits way higher because I have a short torso. I was aiming for the "lifted/parted" empire look and it does the job. The straps are far on the sides but sits very well on the shoulders. I find they are in the right spot to play with necklines. I can wait to see your next video🥰🥰🥰
Aranea Black's Dalia "Tulip shaped" corset was recommended to me for the Edwardian Era. I'm curious, since she's a modern corset maker, if it would give the correct historical shape.
her dahlia and her tulip corsets are two different patterns - were you interested in one or the other specifically? i'm actually currently working on her dahlia corset so that one is coming soon! though i chose the more modern silhouette option rather than the historical one because i tend to have more hip than the historical patterns accommodate for
I'm working on the updated version of this pattern (1810's short) and they fixed the issues you had! I've just got to do the upper binding but I'm having a gaping issue at the top that the drawstring will (hopefully) fix
I just finished making these XD I did buy the pattern to big, so I had to do some alterations because of that, but I was happy with the results (mine did come higher than that mock-up). I still want to make another pair since I wanted to do a trial version first, I'm doing it all with stash fabric! I think a dress based off it would be super cute!
This was also my first time making a corset/stays. I'm always intimidated by the boning, but this was a good place to start. I did also have to do some trimming since not everything was completely lined up, and I had to reread some of the pattern instructions a few times (a part seemed to be copied from a different pattern and did not quite match what I was doing). But in the end the results were good. My straps do also appear to be longer, maybe it is also a sizing difference?
I super appreciate *all* your corset and stays videos. My mom and I are both planning to make corsets for ourselves, and starting out is terrifying. >w< I've at least (finally) convinced her to do mock-ups first, so that should help, right? lol
I want to make myself some regency short stays from red threaded because I want to hoist the girls after my babies sucked them away and my love of sports bras , thank you for talking about your adjusting needs and how low it fits. your commentary on making them help me know where I might need to adjust too when I make mine.
I know you have done one like it but could you try the Butterick B4254? The pieces don't fit right in my eyes and I would love to see if it's just me or if I'm doing something wrong
That’s the pattern I used for my gold renaissance stays, I used the top left version! I altered it by cutting off the tabs at the bottom. What are you having trouble with?
It looks lovely! I love my Redthreaded regency stays, and the instructions are really speedy, but I had a horrible time with sizing. I don't really know anything about pattern development but I suspect it might be because she copy/pastes the same size guide to all the different styles so there might be some negative ease in the size guide which isn't appropriate for this style? I literally could not fit into the bust cups at all, and it's not helped by the fact that you have to buy each size separately so I couldn't just use the bust from one size and the back from another. I also had to add a good three inches to the strap length! I really like my finished stays but it was a real journey, lol.
i would totally believe that about the size guide! ughhh that is the number one thing that bothers me about her patterns - theyre relatively expensive as far as patterns go and she doesn't even include multiple sizes, it seems like an unnecessary way to exploit customers since almost nobody actually fits properly into a single size
@@moth.faerie yep! I have a small back and a lot of breast tissue and her patterns seem to be drafted for the opposite shape. They’d be great if I could mix and match front and back but alas. Slash and spread to the rescue!
This is so interesting! I’m working on a regency short stays project/video right now, drafting my own pattern using the instructions in Stays & Corsets by Mandy Barrington and the pieces are SO differently shaped to the red threaded pattern! I think they’ll fit differently than the red threaded ones anyway because they’re to my specific measurements, but I’m really curious to see how the fit is different from yours! 😁😁
ooh i'll have to try that pattern out! i think i have one of her books but i'm not sure which one but I definitely want to try out book patterns in the future!
I started making this one recently and I agree with the bust feeling a bit small (even though I am already a bit smaller there) so I altered that part a bit. I was worried I didn’t print mine correctly but I also had an issue with the side panel not matching up properly. I love the fabric choice for yours though, it’s really pretty!
Lovely work. Well done. I love the fabric. Last summer I was working on the half-stays. Even though they were too small for me. Because I thought that scaling up would be easy (past me can be adorkable sometimes). I increased the depth of the band around the ribs. I increased the cup size. And then I got frustrated so I put it in a time out. But summer is coming and I want to wear these, so the time out is almost over. I actually think I'm closer to a proper fit than I thought I was - some adjustments to the side seams and I may be there. We'll see. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
hahaha i have sooo many projects in time out... that's a lot of alterations though i would definitely get frustrated too, i hope they're working out now though! or will be once they're free of time out
@@moth.faerie Sometimes a good time out to think about what something is not doing is the only answer... I may go radical on the thing and switch them to front lacing (when we're back on speaking terms again). Because, why not? I've altered Cynthia's Redthreaded pattern so much, why not some more. When (not 'if', goshdarnit) I can get it all to work I'm half tempted to send her a copy of the pattern in the mail... because right now I'm sitting at this weird hybrid of 1880's and 1830's.
@@moth.faerie Hey! Just had to share. Today we were extras in a film set in Ottawa, "Enter the Drag Dragon". The premiere will be some time in the fall and we're in the credits. Such fun. We got to spend part of the day in a vintage 1929 theatre surrounded by local neighbours and the actors.
beautiful! i am making short stays with a very similar colour palette right now, using the Sensibility pattern because i wanted them to be front lacing. i love the handmade aiglet technique you used :D
I'm now officially wanting to make regency short stays! Regency Heave LOL! I'm in love with your fabric choice! Where did you get it? I have a tough time with underwire in bras and I'm interested in this type of support for more everyday. Have you had a chance to wear it around and do you find them comfortable?
i got it from a korean seller on etsy, it's just quilting cotton! i dont remember exactly the seller since i was buying TONS of fabric at the time for masks but they also sold pokemon fabric if that helps? i haven't worn it for a full day but it was comfortable when i was wearing it! it's just a little more push-up than i like in daily wear 😅 i usually wear sports bras
i sew them in one side at at time, so i'll stitch one side in right sides together, then pin and stitch the next side, it makes it a lot easier to handle! then top stitch
Those look amazing!!!! And in my opinion it was a good decision to make them just a bit longer in the front. Hugs you much better and hopefully prevents slipping out. That i have with my first Regency stays, i did not make a mock up and just wenmt from calculating and drafting out straight to the real thing XD
thank you! it definitely feels mor esecure with the extra length. lol i've made the no mockup mistake so many times it's scared me into always doing mockups now 😅
Thank you so much for sharing! The stays and your video are beautiful! I'm making these and I'm almost done my mockup. I *think* it fits....At first I thought it was too small but after watching this and other videos, I think the boob isn't supposed to fit in the "cup" the gussets create; the edge of the "cup" seems to be where the strap connects. Am I correct?
Hm I don’t entirely understand what you mean without a visual aid, so you mean like where the outer edge of the underwire would go on a modern bra? I think what you’re saying is correct
This is kind of a weird question/weird question for this video, but do you happen to remember where your green, mushroom sleeve cardigan is from? Looove these stays, and the fabric you picked is so pretty!!
I am finding it hard to find plus size short stays patterns. I am 48 bust, 41 under-bust, and about a 40 waist. I ordered a commercial-sizing one off etsy and it gave me amazing support, but I would love to make my own to make it fit a little better to me. But red threaded says that plus sizes do not work in the regency stays pattern.. but surely 1/2 more or so in the cups to prevent boobs from spilling out, and 1 inch longer at the waist, would make it comfortable for bigger people?? I am sure they did this in history for bustier women lol.
I think you could probably make the regency stays work with more boning? I had to use the straps for support rather than just the part that goes around my chest so even at a smaller size they’re not the best for support anyways lol
Red threaded actually had a good tutorial video on cording. I just made laughing moons long corded regency corset and used the method in red threadeds video.
The stays look amazing, and makes me wanna get going on making my own. Maybe the chest ended a bit too small because you were wearing a bra during the fitting??

This was also my first time making a corset/stays. I'm always intimidated by the boning, but this was a good place to start. I did also have to do some trimming since not everything was completely lined up, and I had to reread some of the pattern instructions a few times (a part seemed to be copied from a different pattern and did not quite match what I was doing). But in the end the results were good. My straps do also appear to be longer, maybe it is also a sizing difference?
I super appreciate *all* your corset and stays videos. My mom and I are both planning to make corsets for ourselves, and starting out is terrifying. >w< I've at least (finally) convinced her to do mock-ups first, so that should help, right? lol
yes mockups definitely help!! if you need any guidance feel free to ask!
LOVE THE LUKES MUG LOL
These are adorable! I love the fabric!
thank you!
LOVE the fabric!! May be you need a pinch of more room from the gussets.
I want to make myself some regency short stays from red threaded because I want to hoist the girls after my babies sucked them away and my love of sports bras , thank you for talking about your adjusting needs and how low it fits. your commentary on making them help me know where I might need to adjust too when I make mine.
Glad it was helpful!
So pretty!
Thank you!
Iv been really enjoying your videos! So glad I found you!
Thank you!
I love the fabric choice for yours though, it’s really pretty!
glad to know it wasn't just me then!
HELLO, amazing work🌼☺️
how can I find the pattern of this model online?
nice relaxing vid. yey. want to make some to but no idea how you make the bust bigger change.
mostly by making the gussets wider at the top! you could also add some to the top of the side seam if you need more volume at the sides
We'll see.

hahaha i have sooo many projects in time out... that's a lot of alterations though i would definitely get frustrated too, i hope they're working out now though! or will be once they're free of time out
@@moth.faerie Sometimes a good time out to think about what something is not doing is the only answer...
On corsets we'd like to see you make: I've not long finished making the Aranea Black Amber Bunnysuit and would love to see your take on it!
added to the list!
beautiful! i am making short stays with a very similar colour palette right now, using the Sensibility pattern because i wanted them to be front lacing. i love the handmade aiglet technique you used :D
thank you! personally i would stay away from that brand because the owner is self-proclaimed as anti feminist
@@moth.faerie oh my, good to know!
Lovely!!
The part I am intrigued by is how the godets are sewn together. Tempted to make my own pattern.
i sew them in one side at at time, so i'll stitch one side in right sides together, then pin and stitch the next side, it makes it a lot easier to handle! then top stitch
Those look amazing!!!! And in my opinion it was a good decision to make them just a bit longer in the front. Hugs you much better and hopefully prevents slipping out. That i have with my first Regency stays, i did not make a mock up and just wenmt from calculating and drafting out straight to the real thing XD
thank you! it definitely feels mor esecure with the extra length. lol i've made the no mockup mistake so many times it's scared me into always doing mockups now 😅
@@moth.faerie same now XD so many mistakes can be avoided.
me decis por favor donde conseguir el patron
Thank you so much for sharing! The stays and your video are beautiful! I'm making these and I'm almost done my mockup. I *think* it fits....At first I thought it was too small but after watching this and other videos, I think the boob isn't supposed to fit in the "cup" the gussets create; the edge of the "cup" seems to be where the strap connects. Am I correct?
Hm I don’t entirely understand what you mean without a visual aid, so you mean like where the outer edge of the underwire would go on a modern bra? I think what you’re saying is correct
@@moth.faerie yes, that is what I mean!
Kitties!
The pattern didn't call for it so I didn't add one
This is kind of a weird question/weird question for this video, but do you happen to remember where your green, mushroom sleeve cardigan is from?
Looove these stays, and the fabric you picked is so pretty!!
the green sweater is from carmico 😊
@@moth.faerie Thank you!!!
These are beautiful! Are you using a patterned coutil fabric to make these or a twill?
i used a white coutil and the patterned fabric is just quilting cotton!
Have you tried any corsets or stays from Laughing Moon? Their regency stays are corded. I'd love to learn how to cord!
I haven’t but I’ve been meaning to! I’ve also never tried corded stays but want to do that as well 😊
Red threaded actually had a good tutorial video on cording. I just made laughing moons long corded regency corset and used the method in red threadeds video.
oh trust me Yes Gravity will ALWAYS win 😢.....
Love the comment of raising the bust for a dress by an inches white finger is pointing 3 inches up 😂
But really... when/why did everyone start saying ohmpeer?
French?
What? That’s how I’ve always heard it pronounced?
@@moth.faerie No problem. I was answering RD.
🤷🏽♀️
The stays look amazing, and makes me wanna get going on making my own. Maybe the chest ended a bit too small because you were wearing a bra during the fitting??
I wasn’t wearing a bra, just a cami so that UA-cam doesn’t demonetize me for being too scandalous 😅
@@moth.faerie oh sorry, I shouldn't have assumed it was a bra. My bad
They’ll have to go to tenancy court
