Another thing people can do to help: If you were planning on going to Yellowstone this summer, visit the towns north of it instead, once the roads open again. Gardiner, Cooke City and other communities around YNP survive almost completely on tourism. You don't have to pay to explore those areas (unless you come across a state park and don't have Montana plates), and the close proximity to Yellowstone means they have pretty much all the same wildlife. You can fish, hike and camp, and it would be a huge blessing to those communities if you pump your vacation money into their economies as you'd originally planned.

I disagree. This is normal earth changing it's landscapes to something our grandchildren will call beautiful. Where there once was oceans and seas are now deserts, sand dunes, what was a beautiful forest is now a beautiful meadow. There is nothing wrong with the earth changing, humankind is not responsible. Please just accept the earth has been forming nonstop since it's inception. With or without humans the land has been in a state of constant change, always. Think of this as human life as we celebrate birth yet fear, fight, do not accept death. We were once young, strong, healthy and eventually we get wrinkles, bent over, weak , blind, fragile, die. It is a life cycle.

For anyone who lives in the area we all witnessed the storm over Memorial day weekend where the Bear tooth and other ranges received up to six feet of snow. Then came a warmer storm where it dumped rain. I was on the bear tooth highway Sunday and it was raining at over 10,000 feet. It turned to snow but was wet snow. All that rain on top of a pretty thick snow pack led to a massive amount of water flowing off all these peaks and into the lower creeks and rivers. Its been a wild spring out here. Most of the snow we received came in the spring.

My heart goes out to you. We have just gone through this in Australia. We had hillsides and roads in rivers and we were stuck in our hill cabin for almost 2 weeks because they couldn't get the army and heavy duty machines in to remove the trees, dirt, rocks etc while torrents of water washed under and around our home.
    It was pretty scary 😱.
Now time to get vegetables growing and replant the gardens 🌳🪺🌻🌹

I'm pretty sure it was a mix of an abundance of caution on the part of the park services, etc. not wanting to say a date and have to take it back, and the media absolutely LOVING the story and wanting to further some great headlines. They were pairing this story with some fires in other places and giving everyone the impression the Yellowstone washed away and the rest of the country is burning up.

It's not open at all yet to tourists but will this Wednesday (6/22/22). They are starting of with a system to restrict visitors- if your license plate ends in an even number you can only come on even days and if it ends in an odd number you can only come on odd days. Tour groups and those with lodging reservations within the park are exceptions.
