I didn’t know about the camp either, very interesting. The mushroom soup recipe looked delicious and just the thing you need on a gloomy day, heartwarming. Thanks Rebecca.
Enjoyed your video a lot. I know Lodge Moor and Redmires well as I grew up 10 mins down the road. I had some idea about the POW camp but had no idea how big or how important it was. Brilliant fascinating video and yes Lodge Moor is colder than anywhere else in Sheffield lol. 😀
Thanks for a really interesting vlog, Becky. It's hard to imagine what life was like in that camp or any prisoner of war camp for that matter. I also appreciate the research you do for these vlogs. Thanks for posting.
For 27 years I lived in sheffield and not far away in the Hope Valley. The Three Merry Lads is a great pub. Good food and good atmosphere and also marvellous views from the beer garden. I also lived a short distance away from it and used to mountain bike all around that area. Not once did I realise until now that this had been a POW camp. Not only that but I could see you walking on the periphery on what seemed to be a superb level path on which to cycle. Never knew that was there either! So many thanks for the video..
Hi Becky, great vid as usual, only a fellow sheffielder can appreciate the area's which you visit. If memory served me correctly, the old Lodge Moor hospital was nearby, now a housing estate.
Hi Rebecca, Great vlog, but we’ve learnt to expect nothing less now! This resonates with us greatly having family ties to this history. We know of many stories about the Italian prisoners of war and we have connections that would simply fascinate you! Best wishes, J&M XX
Hey Becks, wow it's amazing how many people take their dogs out in the woods not knowing what was around over 80 years ago. My love is secret underground bunkers past and present x
Hi Becky, A few years ago I remember my dad having a book by an Author called John Harris. I think the novel was called Covanant of Death, it was set at Blackmires a training camp for Sheffield soldiers. I think the book was about soldiers from Sheffield who evenually ended up on the Somme. Also talking about Lodge Moor, did you know about the jet aircraft that crashed into the Hospital? See photo of article I have.
Lovely autumnal walk, fascinating history about tho POW camp but must have been a bit eerie around the ruins. Nothing tastier than homemade mushroom soup ❤
Great vlog again😊 iv made most soups , my fave is Roasted Red Peper & Butternut quash, I'll try the mushroom it looks amazing. When do you start Christmas decorating, now I'm looking forward to see how you do it.😊
I need to try a roast pepper soup. I'm usually a stickler for tradition and do the 12 days before however I thinknI might have to go early this year if I'm to vlog it!
My grandfather worked constructing part of the camp. I've still got a wallet which one of the Italian prisoners made out of his blanket for my granddad for treating them like humans. And loads of stories
I used to wild camp there when i was around 16-18. Ive always struggled with my head. This was my place of peace. Never once had an issue with the traveller site next-door. If you keep going to the carpark at Redmires. Walk behind it and you will find a secret gem.
Late in WW2 most prisoners in the camp where Italian and considered low risk. They helped with local farm jobs and built the current 'drive' through Wyming Brook and round Rivelin Dams. I do not know who decided to put such a prison next to some of west Sheffield's water supply? The camp area had at one time being considered for a Sheffield airport but the weather was against such a plan. During WW1 there was a mock up of hill 60 on the western front for training purposes just north of the top Redmires dam
I parked on the main road across from the entrance to the camp there was a little lay by however there was a big car park at the hallam rangers football club
I used to enjoy watching a tv show called 'One Man And His Dog' presented by Phil Drabble. Years later I now find myself watching 'One Girl And Her Dog' !
Hi becky love these history blogs who would have thought prisoners of war was so close looks a beautiful walk I love autumn and heads up on coffee shop I had a fabulous gluten free gingerbread latte and wait for it gingerbread muffin to die for meadow Hall at bakers baristas 😅
Hi Becks I love walking my one year old cockapoo in the woods only problem is because of his colour he blends into the autumn leaves that have fallen 😊 great video bye the way.
Thankyou. That's just reminded me about Campbells mushroom soup I used to make a lovely pasta sauce with it but totally forgot about it, off to the supermarket tomorrow 😆
Brings back happy memories as a child, we used to walk up Wyming Brook and either onto the 3 Merry Lads for a drink and bag of crips and back down to the car or up to Stanage Pole to admire the views, can vaguely remember my dad telling me about the Camp and unfortunately my Grandma died in Lodge Moor Hospital of a heart attack when I was little but can remember visiting. It can be a little bit bleak up there as its very exposed. I'm going to have a bash at the mushroom soup in my soup maker (cheat) usually make Butternut squash soup during the winter months, its lovely.
It was always a treat to go to the pub for pop and crisps! 🥰 I wasn't aware of the hospital until a few people have mentioned it I need to have a read about it. X
