You just have to be a Chinese to drive in China. Srsly, I went to China to visit my relatives and almost have a heart attack driving in there, and my relatives was like: "just be more Chinese, and then you will know how to drive". I tried, and it worked! The problem is as soon as I got back to Toronto, I got 3 tickets in one month.

Yes. Chinese justify this by saying "there are so many people, if you don't take your turn, noone will ever give it to you". This is why Chinese suck at queuing too. They also have this great rule where.. who-ever hits the OTHER with the front of their car is at fault, so cutting people off is totally okay.

Colin Christie we don't do that in china, because we don't want to piss off a random 'gov official' or 'rich people who have power' that sit in the car. They have 100 ways to revenge us and our family. They basically own police.

    • @tannawannavannabittannawan7138
      @tannawannavannabittannawan7138 6 років тому +4

Colin Christie Yikes...........Don’t know about that way out reply above! Doubt that in today’s China. That seems like an answer that would be accurate in rare, extreme cases in old China. What you were saying is very true. People aren’t out to take out all their aggression on the streets, but they aren’t out to take a leisurely Sunday drive either! They just want to get where they’re going as efficiently and rapidly as possible. But you do occasionally get people saying rude things to each other about their driving habits, but nothing that comes close to road rage in other countries. People respect the idea that others also need to get where they are going as well.
There is a LOT of horn honking, but as you already know it’s not the same meaning as in Western countries. People “drive” with their horn, but it’s to let other drivers know that they are right next to them so the other driver does not make a rapidly lane change or other fast movement that would cause an accident. Drivers aren’t upset by having the person near them repeatedly honking their horn or driving very close to them either. 🚗🚙🚛🎺🎺🎺

I think also if you got out to exact road rage at every occasion a driver cuts you up it would takes days to get where you going in China. Plus I guess since it's happening to everyone and you're probably doing it too it must feel like less of a personal attack and because of that is easier to get over. Guess in most countries where people drive better when you do get cut up you feel it's very personal and gets you angrier.

Good times! I used to ride an electric trike in Linyi, Shandong Province. This really takes me back. Awesome. It's not that hard. First, you have to have 360-degree vision. And then you must always mind the hierarchy. Buses first, then trucks, then black cars, then Mercedes and BMWs, then all the other cars, then bikes, then hand-pushed or -pulled carts and pedestrians. Piece of cake.

I worked in this town for a year. Traffic is nuts. My girlfriend is a Chinese. Kept saying to her I can't understand how this works. In the bus you're like: oh shit he's going to hit that car, and then the driver misses by an inch at full speed while nobody is even looking at the bus....
Also honking the horn doesn't mean the same thing as in the west. In China it means: "Hey here I am, keep me in mind."

James Kaplan You got it wrong tho, because China is a developing country. There was a new bus centre under construction in this town named Ningnan a few years ago, so there was no traffic light during that time period. After the bus centre was rebuilt around the Spring Festival, the traffic lights came back and the road became broader. Ningnan is still developing but it is much better now.

Got my license (I'm American) and drove there in the summer of 2011 around Shanghai, from Shanghai to Qingdao and to a village in Shandong province. Wasn't too bad, nothing like what you see here in this video, but one time I got lost looking for a shortcut to a village and there were no signs whatsoever. None. It was complete guesswork, looking at where the sun was in the sky and going from there. Finally found the way back to the main road and found the village, but had no idea how I did it...

Not only can I drive in China but I do regularly now. I have a Chinese drivers license (took me 5 tries). My wife is Chinese and now when we go there we rent a car just like here. The traffic looks crazy but I actually prefer to drive there over here because we waste sooooo much time at stop lights and stop signs here (wasting fuel I might add). As you see in the video an uncontrolled intersection is just entered slowly and you wiggle your way through. It actually works very well and no one gets angry (for the most part the horn honking is just the way they announce their position).

China has laws that incentivize killing pedestrians. Culpable drivers have to pay medical bills for people they hit for the rest of the victim's life, or pay a one time lump sum payment to the family if the person they ran over dies. So, there's enough cases of people hitting someone, and backing up and running them over again. I'm not sure to what degree this perverse law plays a role in their MVA death rates, but I think we can safely assume it does.

After reading the comments below, I think some guys are making a deliberate misinterpretation out of context.
There was a new bus centre under construction in this town named Ningnan a few years ago, so there was no traffic light during that time period. After the bus centre was rebuilt around the Spring Festival, the traffic lights came back and the road became broader. Ningnan is still developing but it is much better now.

This is more efficient than if there were a stop sign or red light. In the area I live in the US major state routes intersect at a red light. And it takes longer to way longer get through than this proportional to traffic volume.

Where are all the 2 wheelers? A surprisingly low number of them in the chaotic mix you filmed compared to the Chinese cities I've been in. Otherwise, not anomalous! And the comment below about the non-aggression is spot on. I would add, If this were London or NY there would be fistfights (at the least) at every intersection!

Of all the answers I would like to say, this is a town in county...County...which means it is a very small, way more behind the rest and poor region in terms of Chinese cities and towns. There was no traffic light here just might because it has not installed yet. China does have these and those, small and big issues, because it is a developing country. There are so many ignorance and misunderstanding on China around the world. Before you say something, better to have something to convince others.

Actually, I've been driving in China for 8 years and the only accidents I've had is 3 times, e-bikes/scooters have hit me from behind at low speed (the Chinese LOVE to check their phones in traffic). It's not too bad here, sure, there are LOTS of complete morons but people rarely gun it so you usually have time to stop or avoid when you see stupid shaite. And also, the main problem here is clearly the local government should have put up a red/green intersection.

Having driven in China, I find that lane discipline on motorways is dreadful. It is very common for people to hog the middle or outside lane (lane 2 or 3) at well below the speed limit rather than keeping to the right when not overtaking. I frequently had to undertake people because of this. Lorry drivers are among the worst and frequently have defective lights at night.

I don't really know how larger intersections in China work. I would assume they would have traffic lights. The only other viable option is that larger intersections they just act like traffic in Meskel Square, Addis Ababa. Seriously, if you thought this video had some risky driving techniques, you should check out the videos of Meskel Square.

See, in places like Vietnam where they can't afford lights at every intersection, the people flow through in a very predictable way. Everyone generally understands "the unwritten rules," and so everything flows smoothly. Traffic moves as a solid rolling mass of thousands of motorbikes that never stops flowing, like a river. If you walk across, they will part like water around you.
China can afford signal lights and a dozen plate readers and facial scanners at each intersection. But since everyone tries to "cheat" their way past everyone else, traffic locks up instantly. The Chinese driver thinks "I will make this move, because it will save me 5 seconds. I don't care if this means 20 cars behind me loses 10 seconds each." Each of them believes they're the only "clever" driver who thinks like this, but the truth is that _90% of them drive like this._ The road system in Chinese cities aren't _perfect,_ but it's perfectly adequate. It's just misused by the people who drive on them.
    Hell is other people.
