Honestly respect them shifting the scope of the game to keep it playable rather than have everyone's work just go into the void and be a distant memory at best or completely forgotten at worst. Also like the aspect of a one and done upfront purchase with no mtx and no required internet connection like the good old days before online only live service riddled with mtx became commonplace.

@@ofat9082 THQNordic has published the 2 most recent games in the series, but they didn't make them. Airship Syndicate made Darksiders: Genesis, and Gunfire Games made Darksiders 3. Seeing as both of these companies have members from the original team that worked on Darksiders 1 and 2, and THQNordic were incredibly willing to put the franchise back into their hands, it's stands to reason that they would want to do the same for any future games in the franchise.

So, I bought the highest tier Founders pack for this, and I agree, that part of what I bought into, a live service/MMO-lite type experience constantly updated in the vein of Warframe, does feel bad getting pared back this hard. However, I will give them some benefit of the doubt that, let's be real...MANY "early access" games don't get repurposed into something maintainable or workable...they just get shut down outright. We get the black background jpeg tweet "something game dev is hard something something we're really sorry, thanks for the support." It says a lot about what the devs made here with Wayfinder that they were willing to significantly reduce the scope and availability in order to keep it playable, and not only that...
Making an offline mode...something that's been a HUGE pain point for, frankly, most big ticket titles these days...I feel like that's kind of a selling point. Weird, growing up in the old school console days when EVERYTHING was offline, but these days, it's different.
I think this is a brilliant move, and as long as they afford my Founder's purchase with tons of items and goodies, I'm all right with this and look forward to playing the full release! Worst case, the game gets a slow and steady influx of players wanting to try it, it builds a cult following and they work on something bigger down the road in the Wayfinder universe.
At least now, the game can live on and not tossed on the garbage pile.

Thank you so much for the support through this bumpy ride. I completely understand the frustration on losing the persistent online aspect of what was expected. Unfortunately fate had different plans for us. This was the only way we could keep Wayfinder around without disappearing like you mentioned was the fate of many other online games before us. I can assure you, the game performance is actually much much smoother without server connectivity. The gameplay has been tremendously polished even from where it stands in Live today. The grind is dramatically reduced and we hope it will be an adventure you will love to explore.

@intothevoid9083 It would be, had Anthem continued to be developed. For the life of me, I can't remember a single MAJOR update Anthem got to really make it shine as a game. The Tombs mission being nerfed wasn't it. Cataclysm wasn't it. Nerfing the loot rain bug TWICE, when everyone was screaming "please give us more loot" definitely wasn't it.
This seems like a major shift in what Wayfinder is. Anthem never saw that.

  • @soulechelon2643

I'm a founder. In fact I'm one of the ones who chucked $150 bucks at the game. I'm no whale - I just wanted to support what looked like a fun game - one I'll play long enough for that money to feel worth it. And when everything exploded I was sad to see it, but I still had faith this game will get through these trials and tribulations and come out as a success. Of course, the fact that DE got alot of that money annoys me greatly, but we're never told of these things until it's too late. It is what it is.
But I still believe this game can succeed. Call it sunk cost fallacy or whatever but quite frankly? A single player/3 player co-op game is actually right up my alley. Heck I got 2 friends I play games with all the time that are suddenly far more interested in this game now than they were when it was an MMO. MMOs demand costant time, effort, and tons of grinding. Co-op games - not as much. So with all things considered, I feel this was the right choice. With no publisher and DE's absolutely terrible mishandling that kneecapped this game right from the start, this is I feel the best solution.
As for my Founders items, I'm happy I'll keep them. As for modders modding them in: One - AS can very easily demand such mods be taken down from Steam Workshop or Nexus Mods and so on. That's how other single player games get away with having purchasable DLC while still being moddable. And Two: while I definitely can't speak for everyone, I personally don't care all that much. I dislike exclusivity in all its forms. I paid that money to *support* the devs, not get a couple of exclusive baubles.
I feel (again, with all things considered up to this point) that Wayfinders finally has a future. Not the future we all envisioned, but at least there is one.

I honestly don't mind the change. The "MMO aspect" caught my interest initially, but as I progressed through the game during my first 20 or so hours, I realized I liked running almost all of the dungeons solo. The "MMO aspect" I liked was just seeing a bunch of people walking around skylight doing their own thing; it made the world seem more alive. Sure, I had a friend who also bought the game so we could play together, but we both mainly played solo and only teamed up when it came to grinding for specific materials. After passing the 600-hour mark, I did end up purchasing the highest-tier founders pack, but that was because I genuinely liked where the game was heading and playstyle. I'm just happy this game isn't getting tossed into the dumpster like other early-access games would have been. Only time will tell how long this game will last and how far it will go.

Thank you for the coverage, we will always be around to answer questions. Ultimately this isn't the path anyone would have expected, but this was the only option to keep Wayfinder around forever with DE shutting down their publishing arm. It will be up to the players to determine if this is a good decision or not, I cant think of another game that has converted from a Live service F2P into a boxed product, but there is an insane amount of content that tons of talented people poured their hearts into and we couldn't stomach that disappearing into the void like so many other games before us.

As a founder - yeah I'm a little sad we won't get the MMO that was promised, but I really really enjoyed the game and want it to succeed. If anything I'm disappointed with DE's mishandling more than Airship's change in direction. Especially since the money I put in was to support a game/concept/style I thought was cool. You could tell Airship really cared and it made me sad seeing all the backlash and anger from a bad launch. I'm usually a massive supporter of DE but running away from the problems and not letting the studio keep all the founder money was a really low blow. If I could get a refund at this point I think I would. The game reached a point where it was unplayable for me. Struggled to do a boss so hard that I spent like 47 attempts trying to do it, the one to unlock the other zone. Had to cheese it to do it. I had chose Niss as my character and perhaps that was like choosing hard mode cause I'm not that good at dodging out of things and not taking damage. I finally reached a point of no return where I finally quit. I think I tried to do other characters, I had been liking Venomess but her lacking damage compared to Niss was always a bit of a bummer to me. It feels like I spent so much time leveling stuff or trying to get it leveled, where that grind burned me out too.
It was easy to see that the game launched too early and needed more time in development. I'm not sure how I feel about the changes as it is so drastic. On the one hand I like to see them taking this kind of approach. Though it does seem like they are already end of life the game and just pushing out the content that they have. On the other hand, yeah I bought into Founder's for a potential Warframe like game. Sucks that will not happen now but to be fair I was already done with the game

Biggest issue I have ( as a founder) is not even necessarily the shift in direction. But abandoning matchmaking/pubs AND dropping Crossplay (and any presumable Cross-save). Crossplay particularly immediately toasts the actual group I was playing with.
It is still a seismic shift in direction and I can see the point of the folks who would want refunds based on that. Its certainly a bigger shift then even most Early Acesses ever go through (or even the shift in No Mans Sky over time).
But yeah the big one is completely dropping matchmaking and crossplay for single player or friends only. (Also I'd slightly question the games balance, because well, Warframe vets we all know that if something is soloable its basically trivial)
Also yeah, being moddable and all, the skins and exclusives that people paid for with actual money (founders pack or otherwise) are basically dust in the wind in terms of value.
Airship themselves is saying they can't do anything for refunds because DE Publishing (which I'm not sure has a direct correlation with the DE Studio (similar to Coffee Stain (DRG) vs Coffee Stain Publishing) has the money and not them. Playstation won't refund it because its been more then 14 days and asks to contact the nonexistent publisher.
If all things being said are to be believed, that means DE (or DE's Publishing Arm, or Tencent or whoever owns the rights) is holding onto millions of dollars fed into an undelivered product and basically abandoned the team who actually did the work without a single cent of it. Which I can't imagine being the complete case, or there'd be some gigantic legal issue going on.

    • @dr.wiggler
      @dr.wiggler 18 днів тому +2

Remnant have matchmaking, DRG... Gunfire Reborn... Roboquest... Aliens Fireteam Elite... so on and so forth
Saying it won't have matchmaking make Airship Syndicate looks really REALLY bad, and match up some people who said they are incompetent of what they were doing.
The right tihng to do would be refund those who paid $100^up founders, which I doubt they would do it sincerely.
In game currency? for a single player game? Skin? for a moddable game?
Anyone who brought the game should contact Steam ASAP, and hope Steam would do something about it.

@@dr.wiggler Yeah I'm not sure how you can expect to launch an MP game of any note in 2024 and not have matchmaking and crossplay (Remnant took awhile but did get there)
the last co-op I remember without matchmaking was Shadow Warrior 2 way back in 2017. And the only multiplayer game of recent memory that was on multiple platforms without crossplay I can think of was BG3 (partially because of the weirdly altered console version maybe isnt strictly an identical game)

What AS is doing is pretty much "we are launching the game like this because is the only thing we can do so the people that paid have a product and all the work we put in doesn't go to waste" the other option is never releasing anything.
The "scummy" part I think comes from DE, and no one likes to think badly of DE because warframe has been a beloved game for over a decade and the devs being so in touch with the community, but DE publishing a game that could be seen in some aspects as a direct competition to Steve's new game was never a good idea.
The fact that all of this went down less than a month after Steve was appointed as CEO of DE doesn't look good either.
I feel bad for Joe Mad and the team at AS, they have a really fucking strong identity in everything they do and have been having the worst luck with their games, I hope this doesn't end the company.

Seems scummy at first but honestly, it could be worse, you could not have a game to play at all. This shift was 100% due to the game not having a playerbase to support a online game going forward. Maybe this switch will save them and we will see a future for Wayfinders.

At the end of the day it sucks, but Digital Extremes got ALL the money from Wayfinder Founder's Packs as the game did not meet it's recoup to start paying Airship Syndicate anything.
The choice to either let the game die and all Founder's Packs become worthless or release the game as a buy to play solo with co-op and give the original Founder's something instead of nothing to show for their investment in the IP is commendable by Airship Syndicate.
Airship Syndicate obviously value this IP as they would have otherwise let it die and moved on to another project. This is making the best of a bad situation, recall that all the server and connectivity issues were with their publisher Digital Extreme whose job it was to supply and maintain the server infrastructure for the game and NOT the developer Airship Syndicate.

If this had been announced as a co-op action adventure like let’s say a co-op Darksiders I feel it would be all fine and dandy. Problem is most of us were looking forward to play this with other people and explore an entire new universe with new characters.
That’s no longer the case and my problem is, if you can finish the entire game with only one character (leveling up, upgrade, cosmetic and whatnot) what’s the point of doing everything again with the other characters?! Are they gonna have different stories, boss encounters or even unlock new areas?! If so, it could be a nice workaround for most but I feel this game could benefit either from controlling multiple characters at once (say like genshin) or having some update like Diablo Rifts were you could come together with other high level players and have a Dungeon to explore of sorts.
As is… feels like a small slice of the big dream we all had for it and that just makes me sad!

Honestly this was probably the best possible outcome we could have gotten out of this for Wayfinder. Does it suck Wayfinder is no longer the genre of game people opted into originally. Absolutely, it just is what it is of course it sucks. HOWEVER generally this shift in direction I feel is ultimately better for the health of the game. First of all Airship Syndicate clearly did not have the experience or man power to properly run an MMO. That's obviously why they seeked a publisher among other reasons like ad campaigning. Secondly the game going single player is infinitely better then it just being scrapped all together. THAT would have trully wasted people's money. At least now people can still play the fucking game. Most studios would have just said fuck it and deleted the game never to be seen again. After people wasted however much money they spent to get into the early access originally. But Airship Syndicate instead took the hard option, and is at least making the game playable in some way. That's more then I can say 90% of studios would even consider let alone actually go through with.
Making the decision to go with this major shift in direction took balls. I can only imagine how fucking scary it was, as a small indie studio. To be so upfront with consumers in the way Airship Syndicate was when they announced this shift in direction. The internet can be crazy, and vindictive at the best of times let alone for situations like this. I hope this shift in direction goes well for Airship Syndicate.

I fully agree with you on the scumminess of it. I was so hyped for the mmo and got the Exalted pack to help support the devs and to make the game a reality. And now I look at the new model and I ask myself “would I spend $150 on this single player rpg?” And the answer is a resounding no, and with the promises being cancelled with no grantee that we’ll ever get the “true” Wayfinder, along with not being able to get any form of refund seems scummy at best, and Overwatch 2 levels of stupidity at worst.
Now do I say all this against Airship or anyone behind Wayfinder? Absolutely not, and I do honestly hope they can recover from this, and turn this into an amazing single player RPG. And I do think this was the best course of action for the company & project as a whole. And who knows? Maybe we will see the “true” Wayfinder some time down the line. Especially if this does well. I was hoping that at launch it was going to fix its issues, but know that even Blizzard with all its resources and experiences routinely stuff that up, I was not surprised when Wayfinder had a disastrous launch.

Well I never really liked games that promised to be online-only(rental if you know what I mean), so it is more good than it is bad because I'm sure nothing lasts forever...
Yet, even though it does last quite well...with monetary issues as another factor, I think this whole MMO trend was always a bit too risky, especially for fresh games.
Hence it is good to hear they have a backup plan rather than a full-on MMO.
