    Look what arrived today. Polini Overdrive Variator for the Honda Ruckus 50cc. Made in Italy and in my opinion, the best aftermarket variator available on the market for the bike. Only took 5 minutes to install from start to finish. Instantly got more top speed, better acceleration (with the lighter roller weights), and lower RPMs at VMAX right out of the box. In fact, with this mod (and a few others), my Ruckus/Zoomer officially joins the 50mph club on flats today at a vmax of 51.4mph. With the taller gearing, however, lighter weights are needed to move the RPMs up for even better acceleration.
    Don't use the drill like me if you are handling a more powerful drill. It could cause serious injuries when used improperly. (Thanks Kevin)

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  7 років тому +1

      I haven't invested in a big bore yet! Depending on where you live the 49cc will do very well if tuned right. And if you go one step above and order the slide pc20 carb you are making nearly 2-stroke territory horsepower without even going to the big bore yet.

  • @CrustyBiker
    @CrustyBiker 8 років тому +3

    What were you getting before it? I only get 25mph, I have a fuel injected U.K Zoomer, it has a smaller spark plug than U.S Ruckus, and I gather Carbed U.S models go about 10mph quicker than ours with no mods, do you think I'd at least get 32mph with JUST this mod?

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  8 років тому

      +CrustyBiker From my knowledge, the F.I Zoomers are speed restricted in their original form. In otherwords, your zoomer should exceed 30mph in stock form with the speed restrictions removed. That is why the polini variator was made in the first place for the EU marketed Honda Zoomers. Changing the variator alone and modifications to the transmission should definitely give you significantly more top speed even before you consider doing modifications to increase engine power.

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  8 років тому +1

      +CrustyBiker To answer your other question, I was getting about 38mph stock on my 2005 Honda Ruckus. Installing the 2006 ECU allowed a higher rev limit bringing me to about 42mph. Installing the NCY CDI, lighter slider weights, K&N intake, and increasing jet size gave me the necessary power to exceed the stock variator's capacity (48mph at 10k RPM). After that, installing the polini variator took me to 50mph at a much safer RPM. The polini variator alone SHOULD get you more speed with the correct roller weights, granted you are not banging into the rev limiter (weights too light) or being bogged down (weights too heavy). The polini variator AND the polini CDI should guarantee you would hit 32mph or more for sure.

    Hey there I’m new to the ruckus scene. Can you help me out. Currently the ruckus does about 40. It has a intake that comes out of the carb instead of the stock box. Other than that it’s stock besides the lowered seat. What should I do to it next to hit about 47-48. I’m from wisconsin so it’s pretty flat up here in elevation. I weigh about 144.

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  3 роки тому

      For me, without modifying anything else - lighter roller weights and a rev limit de-restriction took me to 46mph. The rest of the top speed got there with alot of money. If you need 50mph all day, it is a lot more economical to install a gy6. When you're done with it, put the stock engine back in and you could sell the ruckus for a much better price for less miles on the oem engine.

  • @ky1781

      +Kyle Gottschalk I ordered my variator from SCOOTERSWAPSHOP. They had a coupon going on and it worked out to be the cheapest price I could find for the variator. For the best top speed, the polini variator wins hands down. However, it depends on whether your engine's got enough power to push those top speed. I have many other mods to reach 50mph on flat roads (and rather quickly for a ruck too!)

    Nice video! Wondering if getting a CDI is required (in your opinion). I’m only trying to get to 45 max (ish), cruising at 40. Just bought a brand new Ruckus last weekend and don’t entirely want to mess with electrical stuff. Thinking of just getting a performance variator, clutch and weights, new exhaust and intake. I weigh 165 lbs. Thanks in advanced!

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  5 років тому +3

      Trevor, I am assuming your ruckus is US model. In that case, a roller weight change alone (e.g 4.5-4.8g weights) to maintain the engine at approximately 8200-8500RPM should be sufficient achieving 42-44mph at/near sea level. A CDI would give you approximately 45-46mph over 9300-9500RPM. A polini variator would bring those speeds back down to a safer engine rpm approximately 8900-9200rpm provided that your engine is making enough power.
      If you live at higher altitudes, you would probably want the engine to produce more power to achieve the same results. The polini variator itself didn't offer as much improvement in terms of cost-benefit ratio.
      In my opinion, the ruckus was most responsive and saw significant the most improvement from roller weight change, intake & jetting, and CDI.

    • @chevahh87
      @chevahh87 5 років тому

      FIFTYmil thank you so much for the quick reply! And yes, USA. I live in Los Angeles in a somewhat hilly area. I really don’t want to mess with the rev limiter on this bike as I’m not trying to hit 50 mph (I say this now...). I think I’ll pull the trigger on dr.pulley weights and see what that gets me over the stock setup. Just so I’m reading this right though, you are saying the Polini variator decreases speed? Or it maintains the same speed at a different RPM?

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  5 років тому

      @@chevahh87 Due to difference in design compared to OEM, particularly in the roller weight ramps, the polini appears to gear the transmission taller than the OEM 2005 and 2006 variators. That is, it lowers the overall rpm range for the same speed (ie. at 50mph while a stock variator may operate the engine at 11,000RPM, the polini variator would operate the engine at 10,500RPM, for example.) However, I do not have sufficient evidence or research to back up that claim as it could be due to other factors. You can see the difference between stock and polini variator in my other video.

    • @chevahh87
      @chevahh87 5 років тому

      FIFTYmil so, update. I purchased a trail vapor TTO tachometer and took it out to my testing grounds. I was able to hit 40-41ish mphs at ~8700 RPM. I live ~850ft above sea level and this speed was achieved on flat road. If I lighten the weights slightly bringing that RPM to its limit, would I really get any increase in mph? We are talking 200rpm. Also, when you installed the Polini variator, did you get an increase in acceleration and top speed with the same weights? Thanks

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  5 років тому

      @@chevahh87 You're correct, in your case a change in roller weight would do little to give you extra top speed. You may consider changing tires as I am running Pirelli SL26 130 size both front and rear which gave me a slightly taller gearing.
      However, in your case with the supplied information, I would install the polini variator first (which should lower your 41mph RPM,). At this point your engine may or may not have enough power to reach higher top speeds, and therefore I would decrease the roller weight. Dyno graphs have shown that more power can be made beyond 9000RPM, but it is entirely up to you whether you want to install a CDI. That combination should get you comfortably to 45mph. If not, you will have to consider tuning your engine for more power. I found that intake modification greatly enhanced power output for this particular engine.

  • @junktinker
    @junktinker 6 років тому

    I put this kit on a stock Ruckus and did not get any gains in speed on the flats. I lost power going up hill and reved out going down hill at 42mph. But with other mods to a bike it might help out more...

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  6 років тому

      You see, if you fit a 6th gear to your current car with 5 gears I wouldn't expect any improvements also. The same applies here.
      Follow my other documentaries on installing a tachometer and tuning your roller weight to maximize the amount of power your engine puts down into transmission and thereby into the rear wheels to make the best out of your polini variator.

    • @junktinker
      @junktinker 6 років тому

      FIFTYmil when you change gearing in any vehicle it should change the performance characteristics of the vehicle. Lower gear more torque less speed. Higher gear less torque more speed. The whole point of gearing is to be able to change performance characteristics of an engine to suit individual needs.

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  6 років тому

      Correct if we were changing the entire ratio of a manual transmission or specifically just one gear in that manual transmission.
      However, applying your assumption on the CVT transmission is incorrect. Simply changing from an oem to a polini variator isn't equivalent to "change gearing" at all. If you compare the stock variator to the polini, they are nearly identical, even their overall diameter. The only difference is 1) slightly more aggressive roller ramps (which, in your case, actually makes the engine perform worse because it appears you have the wrong roller weight setup), 2) A closer ramp cutout to crank (ie a lower gear but any benefit is offset by point 1), and 3) a higher cutout at the outer diameter of the roller ramps (ie. longer total ramp) which you can't make use of. Thus, based on those three differences, you did not see any gains at all as expected.
      In contrast, your analogy would apply more to changing roller weights. As my other video shows, you might reap more out of a $6 roller weight change and get more of the desired improvements than changing the entire variator ($60+). ua-cam.com/video/d6oFSVqiles/v-deo.html

    • @junktinker
      @junktinker 6 років тому

      The kit I got from them came with the different rollers and springs I have tried many combinations on the stock Ruckus but in the end I see not improvement over the stock set up.(thanks for point 1,2,3) I think for this unit to work you need to Mod your Ruckus then use this to help out. My main point is just one. If you have a stock Ruckus this will not benefit you so spend you money on engine mods. But if you know of what setting with weights and springs works best on a stock Ruckus I would love to see that video and would try it out and give my feed back on it.

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  6 років тому

      The polini variator was never intended for the US market in fact. It was designed for the Europe/UK fuel injected zoomer which came from Honda with a limited variator that only achieves 35km/h. I have been trying to educate the public to not dive straight into changing everything as scooter shops often tell you to. In most cases, as seen here, changing a $60 variator wouldn't achieve much improvement. Instead, a $6 change of roller weights would offer a much more significant improvement. I try to break down what each mod does - their benefits and disadvantage.
      Depending on how much you weigh, if you're the same weight and living at the same level above sea level, I have found great success using 4.5-4.8g weight with CDI/rev limiter de-restriction. Dyno graphs have shown that more power can be made @ 10,000RPM beyond the rev limiter. Obviously there will be accelerated engine wear. After that, if you want more power I would suggest getting a slide carburetor and removing the airbox - but that will make the ruckus significantly less reliable/more difficult to start/poor low throttle useability.
      Any mods after that I would seriously consider engine swap or a different scooter as it gets exponentially more expensive with diminished return.

    I wanna know how I can make my zoomer accelerate faster, I am not interested in a higher top speed...What to do?
    Upgrading to sliders?
    Use sliders or rollers?
    If using ligher sliders or rollers, I might get better acceleration, but also an inevitable higher top speed?
    Thx a lot man

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  7 років тому

      To make your zoomer accelerate faster, you can 1) increase horsepower 2) tune your transmission so while it accelerates at the RPM where most horsepower is made 3) less significantly, stiffer clutch engagment springs will give you a more aggressive launch from standstill. Every engine is different in hp output so it's hard to tell but I tend to find that most of them make peak horsepower around 9800RPM-10,000RPM. It is a very good idea to invest in a $6 tachometer here (affiliate link: goo.gl/LC0oA3 ) and start tuning!

    This makes it impossible to ride because as soon as I put the back wheel on the floor, it turns off.

      Sounds to me like your clutch is permanently engaging.
      I would take it apart again and inspect the clutch for anything jammed in place. Perhaps you installed the belt incorrectly on the clutch side. The belt should sit inside the clutch pulley (looks exactly like the variator) between the two faces. If you installed it anywhere else, the belt may come into contact with the clutch bell side which is connected to the rear wheel causing it to engage and spin at idle. Feel free to email me with pictures if you need further help!

      According to the workshop manual, if you have taken apart the carburetor position sensor, you must reset it by disconnecting the battery. However, that should have no relationship with the CDI.
      To ensure that your CDI is installed properly, I would strongly suggest investing in a $6 tachometer (goo.gl/v4Vnie). You will need it in the future anyways for more tuning. Alternatively, if the engine is fully warmed up, I would put the ruckus on the center stand and rev it at full throttle. If you have an aftermarket exhaust, the rev limiter's sound is very noticeable. However, if your cdi was installed correctly, you run the risk of exceeding the safe RPM limits of the engine and risk catastrophic engine failure.

      Ok. I just ordered the tach. Its a 2017 with only 500 miles. I installed CDI a month ago then the Pollini Varitor yesterday. With those 2 upgrades the top speed should be higher than 35mph when it was stock.
      Just wondering what to do next to get higher top speed? Should I try the other 6.8 gram weights that came with it? Once I get the tach I will run at top speed and let you know the RPM.

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  6 років тому

      When i weighed 180lbs, I only threw in 5.0g weights in a stock variator and my ruckus was hitting 44mph stock on the rev limiter. With the CDI, 4.8g weights and a polini variator (polini variator actually decreased accelearation), I was around 46mph. Removing the airbox and rejetting the carb I was around 48mph but much better acceleration. Notice how the top speed doesn't increase by much, but the 0-30mph improved dramatically.

      I received the tach you recommended. So affordable and so easy to install. Do you know what the correct setting is for a 2017 Honda Ruckus. 02(once per revolution) or 03 every other revolution?

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  6 років тому

      4 stroke engines are every other revolution if I remember correctly. With that being said, if you see 6000RPM at idling, then it is quite obvious I gave you the wrong setting!

      This polini variator is designed for the honda ruckus and other engines that have the same crankshaft spline (zoomer, metropolitan, jazz, scoopy, etc.) It increase performance as a whole kit in several ways 1) lighter roller weights and 2) a longer roller ramp which allows the belt to sit both lower at the lowest ratio and higher at the highest ratio offering both improved low speed acceleration and top speed maximum speed - provided your engine has enough power capable of handling those extra gearing ratios.

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  7 років тому +1

      For a 180lb rider and limited by 700m elevation I "cruise" (which is really WOT) at 70 kmh with just a $10 roller weight change, $15 jet and drilled airbox mod. Throw in a unlimited CDI to use extra power above the rev limiter and you're looking at 78-82km/h.

      You can visit the affiliate links here:
      5.5g weights (goo.gl/jU5jCl)
      Tachometer (goo.gl/q7EQU0)
      Polini variator (goo.gl/pZziSZ)
      The above mods should tune your tranmission to operate at peak horsepower and give you the best acceleration and highest top speed, as limited by the power your engine makes and the rider's weight.
      When you find that is not enough, then you might consider tuning the engine to extract more horsepower. For the ease of rideability I would recommend sticking with the stock carb. Even with the stock carb you can tune for moderately more power from the engine by providing more air and tuning the fueling with the correct jets.
      Jet kit (goo.gl/IeH4Cl)
      CDI (goo.gl/HZk0JR)
      If you prefer to extract the MOST horsepower you might want to start looking into a slide carburetor to replace the original one and other more expensive engine modifications. At that point, the bang for buck you might just do an engine swap all together. The ruckus is, comparably, much slower than similarly priced 2-stroke scooters and that is an unfortunate a fact despite its cool looks.

      +Mantis Reynolds
      I find that modifying the intake / jetting the carb and changing the roller weights along with the polini variator to be the most effective mod to date in gaining top speed and acceleration. You will also need a CDI to de-restrict the engine RPM. Other mods I have include H.O Camshaft, Lightened Clutch bell, Lightened Flywheel, Lightened variator drive face, Shortened Variator drive boss, Polini Variator belt, and a few other mods - All of which really improved the engine response but didn't change the top speed that much relatively speaking in comparison.

      I wouldn't exactly call 30mph top speed to nearly 60mph top speed minimal gains or making my bike slower. While it is a good idea to engage the clutch at a higher RPM near peak power, it is not practical for my application of daily riding to and from work as a commuter bike. In fact, in stop & go traffic as I have found repeated high RPM clutch engagement will lead to overheating and clutch fade.

      In my opinion it really boils down to personal opinion whether a title is catchy or not. Some finds it misleading while others doesn't. So if I make you happy and change my title, someone else would complain about the exact same thing. It is not my job to please the audience because if you don't like the video, don't visit my channel and don't watch my videos.
      What's important is that none of my videos are misleading nor sponsored to sell parts. This channel reviews scooter parts with my honest opinionand provides instantaneous before/after feedback. I pay for my own parts and I document the change in hopes it might help someone who wants a slightly faster scooter without diving into a whole bunch of unnecessary mods that scooter mechanics often recommend - hoping to make a quick buck

The ruckus is speed limited by the fuel injector set up. My brand spanking new 2015 never got more than 39 mph, even down hill. I was just hitting 40 and you could feel the motor bogging down so it's the fuel delivery system that limits how fast it will go.

      First, please clearly indicate where I claimed that a "different cvt will get your ruckus to 50mph." If you have read the description the modifications to the ruckus is listed.
      "the ruckus is speed limited by the fuel injector set up" - This statement is false. Ruckus are carbureted.
      "My brand spanking new 2015 never got more than 39 mph, even down hill" - This statement is partially true, because you're limited by the rev limiter from Honda. However, since 2006 the Ruckus are capable of 45mph top speed stock with the higher rev limit update.
      "I was just hitting 40 and you could feel the motor bogging down so it's the fuel delivery system that limits how fast it will go." - This statement is false and purely just a speculation of why you're stuck at 40mph.

      FIFTYmil ruckus’s are fuel injected tho, maybe you don’t live in the US but here they are very much fuel injected 😂

      FIFTYmil nvm apparently they are carbureted I thought they were fuel injected cuz it said liquid cooled so I Got confused and thought it was fuel injected my bad. Honestly I was planing on getting one of these and I didn’t like that it was fuel injected but I’m glad I was wrong 😂 I like good old fashioned carbs even tho I’m 15 I still appreciate that simple mechanical carb.

      49cc Ruckus Scooter breaks 50MPH! Unboxing and Installing the Polini Variator. See the 50MPH? That is were you claimed the Polini variator got you to 50. Yes I was wrong about the Ruckus being fuel injected but it is still limited to 39mph. Maybe the CDI is programmable and it's set by local regulation. 35 mph is the legal speed limit for 50cc scooters in Indiana so 39 mph max speed. I just want to see a Ruckus have the CVT changed and a speed test done to prove the concept. I don't want to make an investment only to find it was all bunk from the get go.

      I'm sorry but please read it again? 49cc Ruckus scooter break 50mph! Unboxing and installing the polini variator. Those are two sentence absolutely unrelated to each other. That's equivalent to saying: Alan D1 commented on my video! Today we will discuss about homosexuality.
      Does that make you a homosexual? I didn't think so.
      No where on this video does it say "Installing the polini variator will get your Ruckus to 50mph." And again you're wrong the CDI is not "programmable" nor "set by local regulation."

    i think this one is asale pitch it will nèver give you that much jump in speed just by changing your variator who ever or what ever brand you buy or even if you change your cdi its all bullcrap im a mechanic for long time and me and my guys have been winning a lot of race and still are beating many well i font know if you are being sponsored or wanting to be sposored by that product man stop lying to the people might be tempted to buy that shit and find themselves very dissapointed of your empty promise that they will reach 8o km or exceed 50miles cuz i know it will take so much more than that sick variator or cdi and fyi its not a good start to give misinformation pls dont do that and sorry if i hurt your feelings racing and making motorcycle to go faster or your scooter go fast is not one or 2 step it takes a lot more

    • @FIFTYmil

      They all start off saying "They have been a mechanic for years" and then "how they know better." Typical approach for a scooter mechanic who often jumps straight to conclusion -just based on title.
      Please show me where in this video have I ever mentioned that installing a polini variator will instantly increase your top speed to 50mph.
      Of all the scooter channels on youtube, this one is by far the least biased because every mod is purchased with my own money and I document the improvement immediately after each modification. Other channels will tell you that you need this and that- big bore, cdi, variator, jets from their shops - without telling you why you even need it.
