Assuming Leverkusen wins the Bundesliga this season… I have a feeling it will be difficult to keep Alonso long term just on the $$ potential coming his way
He’s a legend already just winning their first league title, That’s more than enough. We all know with all respect he’s aiming for the top clubs where he can implement his tactics and coaching the top players. Assuming his history and nationality the natural path is Liverpool and then end up in Madrid after couple of years.
@@paulmelnyk6897 Technically possible, but the way Bayern's playing they may even lose against Köln, but even if they don't, Leverkusen just needs to win against Bremen, which while they shouldn't be underestimated, is not unlikely.
Don't underestimate Xabi Alonso's time coaching youth teams, he's been able to figure out his coaching philosophies away from the limelight and journalists, he was able to make mistakes and learn from them, it's not something that is afforded much in top level football.
Very much agree. Certainly important to learn in a protected environment. Also at Leverkusen the stakes were not too high and he would have had a couple years to develope his coaching even if the results would not have shown. This is why I'm hesitant about a possible Liverpool or Bayern move after this season. Better take the time to develope before going to a big club with more media and performance pressure...
German football is so exciting in all aspects this season. All the sensations in the DFB-Pokal. Leverkusen played the second best Bundesliga season ever right now with fantastic football. So many spectacular matches in the Bundesliga. Even 2. Bundesliga is crazy with attendances of 50k or 60k or 20k away fans. And 30k in the third division. Such an amazing football country and the Bundesliga is so underrated. You have it all there. Attractice attacking football, crazy fans, and also exciting off the pitch
Being a Benfica fan, I always knew Grimaldo was one of the best Left-Bavks in the world. We dearly miss his presence on the field. For me he is the main reason we fell so hard this season. Never understood how the rest of the world never saw him like that.
I believe often the Portuguese league is overlooked for talent until that same talent moves into the major markets Even Grimaldo, if he was on another team in the Bundesliga.. I think would still likely not be credited properly. Due to the success of Leverkusen it's impossible to not take notice imo
I discovered this guy on Football manager 2023 and undoubtedly he was so good at everything. His stats are pretty much on same level as Marcelo but much better at free kicks. How this guy had been undervalued by major clubs is still a mystery to me 😊
😂😂 and who will be the Mourinho coz on the look of things Xabi for me is the master Pep, his style of play, defence and attack is impeccable, actually the entire system is great
As a liverpool fan I would love him to come back to us after Klopp leaves but I do love what he is doing at Leverkussen and hope he continues the amazing work he is doing there instead of jumping over to Munich.
I think this is prolly the most rumored story for Alonso from a managerial stance ^ I think another question is around… Can Leverkusen bring in top top level talent for the future? This year has been a culmination of fantastic young performers, vets living up to the hype, & obviously the tactical side being aligned… but, for long long term success in football you have to keep adding talent & depth each year
Alonso has a chance of becoming a Leverkusen legend. He must stay and help Leverkusen. Spanish Obi Wan can then leave after huge success with his head held high like Zidane did with Real Madrid
You could be right, but... if this didn't go over well... it would 100% be seen as a super risky move just based around the lack of experience as a manager for Alonso
Neverkusen turning into Neverlusen / Neverlosin' (That's not my creation, I would like the credit the original inventor of the pun, but I don't know who she or he is. Anyway it needs to catch on.)
He is a great player and is making the transition to manager the right way he is paying his dues and gaining more respect from clubs, players and the ones who drive the team the fans.
Did you know that Alonso has an All Ireland medal for Gaelic football? He spent a summer in Ireland got interested in the game and won it with a local club. Which is amazing really as it takes years to get good at. I believe the only player with a Champions league medal and and All Ireland.
he for sure gets some due in this - being the risk taker in the aquisition & would have been the person feeling major pressure if it didn't turn out well Shoutout to Simon Rolfes
People normally also forget to mention that Xabi Alonso was a key part of the best Spanish National Team, and possibly the best National Team in history, winning Euro, World Cup and Euro again with absolute dominance. I see many resemblances in the way this Leverkusen plays to that Spain.
Among the greatest achievement in football. For one thing this is the German top league and not something minor. Then it's in finally breaking the jinx for a long-suffering club that also carried severe psychological disadvantage of soul-sapping last-foot failings. And achieving this against Bayern Munich who looked to have `better' players and resources. Xabi Alonso has taken a huge step in joining the exclusive club of elite managers.
Honestly if you look at his playing days you can tell he would succeed as a manager. Pirlo seems more of a surprising let down than any of the others you mentioned.
I think it's really challenging, cause sometimes you also have the right mix of players & compared to the older days... Managers are given so little time to actually "develop" a squad. So you need to have some signs of instant success with these moves. Especially, at the largest clubs
@@TheFootballRecords in Xabi's case I see that he has always been someone very tactical as a player, had solid leadership qualities and wasn't silent when things were going wrong. On top of that he had patience and intelligence. I think those qualities moved over to the managing side of things really well. Now another thing is that the staff at Leverkusen are definitely doing their jobs, whoever is scouting players needs a raise. They found the best match to Alonso's ideology and tactics. The trainers are doing their job and let's give a round of applause to the Fullbacks causing insane chaos for the opposition this year. If I could study to be a coach I'd do it. It seems stressful but also fun.
....and 3 weeks later they are still unbeaten hat 16 ahead to the second team Bayern München, is in the Dfb-Cup-Final and under the 8 best teams in the europaleague .....
It was a brilliant decision by the Leverkusen board. They've got a lot more than what they bargain for. For spaniards, signing Alonso is no brainer, even before he started this year's Bundesliga legendary campaign. As you mentioned, he was born into football. His dad Periko Alonso, was a great player and manager, and he also played with the best players, successful clubs and coaches from the past two decades! It is a perfect mix of manager/playing styles to create a mastermind Alonso is today. Some rumors in Spain say Alonso already has a deal with Florentino Pérez, to wait for him another year at Leverkusen, allowing Ancelotti to retire next summer 2025.
I would even say the way Alonso played was also tactical. He wasn’t a player that overly relied on superior physical attributes & then it’s actually incredible when you go through the managers he played for
