this movie/series is so near and dear to my heart. as a victim of CSA, it makes me feel so happy to see a narrative give these children justice against their abusers. instead of a fluffy story of the spirits needing to forgive the people who did unspeakable things to them, they are allowed to serve their own justice and that is what sets them free. i love this so much.
there are some things that cannot and should never be forgiven, i will never forgive my abuser. but this anger is what fuels me to heal and process the trauma so that i can achieve the things that i want to in life. my anger fuels me to succeed, because that is another way to prove that my abuser has no hold over me.

On the topic of children's art, I remember the children's drawing in the FNAF games giving this added layer of emptiness and paranoia. The animatronics are seen as friendly faces to the children, and the drawings on the wall kinda shows in almost a taunting manner that no matter what happens to you, the children will never know or understand the true horror behind those masks.
Behind those masks wasn't really horror, it was the human that made them.
On it's own, made by anyone else, they would have been just cute robots.

Funny, because the animatronics are child murder victims. They're literal ghost children possessing the animatronics. It'll be interesting if the animatronics in the FNAF movie have somewhat of an innocent childlike behavior to them, kind of how we see evil children in other horror movies. Although I don't really know
this is the first analog horror thats actually made me happy, the good ending and hearing jess actually speak warmed my heart, even if its just a fictional scary story

If you want something else like that, try Angel Hare. I mean, the exact horror element is both resolved and unresolved, being left vague, but the supernatural being involved is benevolent and the ending was cute

It doesn't have a happy ending but it have solid end (which is pretty rare for analogue horrors imo) with all motives for every main characters (including the monster) pretty clear.
It's ending is sweet because if this were real life, Jess probably would've never make it in the end. Or if she did, the family would've been destroyed beyond repair where Jess may need to spend the rest of her life in an asylum, or the therapist would've never got to the bottom of the case. This may sound harsh but I know that this story wouldn't work well in a real settings knowing how fragile developing children and families are when these kinds of stuff happens. I think there are some movies with this same premise that have bad outcomes
one thing I can appreciate about this series is the happy ending, I love how they gave the children the justice and rest they deserved, and healed Jess, allowing the family to live happily. I think that's a beautiful thing that is missing from most media now. in a market that rewards bad ending in horror, its nice to see something with a good ending that's done very well.
Thanks for this comment. I actually went to go watch the series since hearing it actually had a good ending, and I'm glad I did. What a story... I teared up at the end. So glad they found peace. Jess' artworks really sold the torment and horror of these kids being trapped, so to see that drawing of the children flying away at the end I could feel the weight lifted, and it hit me harder than I was ready for.
Something I didn't expect was for the mechanics of the world to be kinda... badass? Like the whole thing with the kids transforming into these nightmare versions of themselves and then getting to see Jess transform and have her own nightmare form was obviously horrible and sad, but it had this element to it of being kinda cool with the kids all having unique designs and being able to use their ghost powers to help. The world-building was great, is what I'm trying to say I suppose. The element of some of the kids retaining a part of themselves and being kind but others having lost themselves and becoming agents of vengeance, really cool story aspect with having to help them and then all of the kids uniting at the end to kill the Clarks.
I'm rambling lol, I really really like this story.

I think it's especially great since the story itself focuses so much on the victims. I like the idea that it's possible for there to be justice.
Kinda makes me think, too, about how it's much more important to remember the victims of mass shootings than the perpetrators.
Reminds me of 'Mama' 2013 by Guillermo del Toro, it's an empathic way to view Ghosts, they are the antagonists but ultimately they are victims. In 'Mama' a ghost living in a cabin in the woods adopts two girls who's father killed their mother and was about to kill them, she cares for them as well as she could for a few years until they are found, she haunts and threatens their new adoptive family, but in actuality this ghost only wanted her child that was taken from her because she was disabled, taking her child and plunging to their death, she haunted the cabin until the girls arrived at her care. I love that Guillermo del Toro rarely uses ghosts as the villains but as victims of greater evil or tragedy and mostly care or aid protagonists while still being terrifying.
I saw that movie when it first came out, I was probably 12 or so, and it was so touching. We're always told in horror movies that ghosts are people's lingering spirits, but Mama was the first time it actually FELT that way to me and I really loved it.
Crimson Peak was very much the same sort of deal. Loved that one.
Del Toro didn't direct Mama, just produced it.
This movie is a main reason I actually paint, draw, claymate and partake in other forms of art . It gave death a better storyline then that of only vengeance....but instead agony, and the pain of a distraught mother.

The story it’s tragic but for me it’s refreshing that main protagonist and her young patient survived whole ordeal and actually sent those ghost free.
I personally prefer those kind of endings.
Analog horror could really do with more happy-ish endings. Too many downer endings could get exhausting.

Horror stories with good endings are underrated
Preach it! It's kinda a bummer that downer endings are so prevalent in analog horror in particular. Only happy one I know of is the FNAF VHS Tapes, and even then, that already had a preexisting plotline to follow (a somewhat batshit insane one in later years, yes, but a plotline nonetheless).

One of my favorite parts is that Adam even though he just died, murdered brutally, He sees this monstrous looking childs spirit that had been haunting his daughter and his last thought before ascending was to try and reach out and take her with him. He was a good man.

I worked security at an art exhibit and I was in a section for kids art and I tell you, it was the most creative yet messed up shit I’ve ever seen.
They were putty art and it was “humanity abstract”. A business man like figure with tendrils from its torso, a creature that likes like a dinosaur bit was hollow inside; really strange but “new” creatures.
I wish I had my old phone to have the pictures but they were fascinatingly haunting.

i work at daycare and i’ll hear stories about some weird things that i know aren’t true..but what if it is (ie. this kid was telling me the police come to his house to give him stickers when his dad is being bad). or these this one boy plotting to kill another then escape. everything is warped in a child’s mind but sometimes even they can’t tell where their imagination stops and reality starts

When I heard you say "and the Clarks, a beloved family who owned a burger shack" I was immediately scared this series would fall into predictability with the plot line being that the clarks killed children and used their meat for burgers. I was pleasantly surprised though! The story we ended up getting was a lot better than I thought it was going to be.
Her little voice saying "they're free now" always gives me chills. It always makes me cry. I watched the movie fo of this a little while ago and i can't stop thinking about it. It touched me.
I'd like to point out that, near the end of CutH, you can actually hear a faint background sound that, to me, sounded like a door opening behind the voice actress, as though implying there may be one last loose end to the story overall. Perhaps one final ghost left, or a still-living child trafficker.
My question for confirmation of this was met with something to the effect of "That was a chair squeaking, I just left it in because it sounded creepy".
And honestly? I think that's both kind of hilarious and kind of endearing.
That is hilarious, and also kind of genius. This story is wrapped up pretty well, but if they for some reason do ever want to do a sequel, that can serve as a nice bit of retroactive foreshadowing

I genuinely got kind of thrown off with the "I understand you've been having trouble sleeping." Line because I had moved my attention elsewhere and am an insomniac who typically sleeps in 36-48 hour cycles not 24 hour ones so it felt super weird and personal all the sudden to suddenly be 'told' that lol.

kinda unrelated but i totally relate to sleeping in 36-48 hour cycles!! my biological clock does this thing where i physically can’t make myself fall asleep for two days, then i sleep for 12-14 hours the next day at weird times usually around 7 am to 4 pm, and then i can’t sleep again for another two days. no idea wtf is up with it. i have orders from the neurologist to get sleep studies done but i can’t until summer because i’m too busy with college. they gave me the medication for narcolepsy but i don’t know if that’s the full diagnosis yet lmao
Not quite as bad here, but having been up almost 24 hours currently and still not sleepy it did catch me off guard too.
This series actually stuck with me. Its truly horrifying because despite the ghosts its very ground in reality. And the ghosts allow us to focus on the children who went through basically a form of tort*re.
I didnt mind catching the villains early. For me it was more exploring the story with Jess.
bro i watched Children Under the House a few weeks ago and was SO enraptured by it, that ending was just a a a a a a a
but i remember having a nightmare a few nights later involving the kid who was torn in half. ofc her look was disturbing in the video, but i wasnt bothered by it, but she freaked me out in my dream. kicker is, i KNEW she was from this story, so while i was freaking terrified, i was like "but why tho"

I don't actually think a twist that can be figured out a bit "too" early is necessarily a bad thing. The works of HP Lovecraft are great examples of writings whose twists are frankly downright predictable, yet still manages to build suspense while building up to their "reveals".
A twist that is predictable, but ultimately makes sense is infinitely better than a twist which was UNpredictable, but came out of nowhere.
A twist that you can't predict causes surprise. A twist that you can predict causes dread.
Honestly, I was able to see the reveal with the Clarke’s from the very moment they were introduced. It seems too easy, and maybe that was intentional. I think the creator wanted us to know that, but wanted to make us desire for the characters to know that to avoid the danger. Knowing the threat of the Clarke’s so early made them this looking presence in the background I was dying to learn more about and see exactly what they did to those kids. It also made the moment Julia realized who they really were feel so satisfying like “finally, you see what I’ve known for so long”, and it makes the horror of her seeing that she shouldn’t have talked to them all the more terrifying. I won’t rate them as antagonists as I don’t think they go that high, but as tools in the atmosphere of the series, I’d say they are nearly S class.
Every piece of information we learn about the kids makes this seemingly sweet old couple look all the more heinous and leads you to think they have some masterful control or something to have gotten away with their horrible acts so many times.
Seriously, I love the atmosphere in this series. The pauses, the slow moving of the scenes that allows each moment to breathe and leave you on the edge of your seat to see what happens next, even if you can already predict what will happen. When I finished the series, it was on a night where I said I’d only get to the hour mark and watch the rest the next night but I got so captivated that I told myself I had to finish it all. The skill of the creator is unquestionable.
I know this is disjointed, but I just have two more things to say. The first is on the Homework. I felt that these moments were some of the scariest because of how unpredictable they were. In these scenes I imagined Adam and Jess in the house talking. Here we have a father disconnected from his daughter and possibly blames himself for the loss of her voice. He has no idea how little control he has in these situations. When he started talking about Jess’s “imaginary friends” I was terrified because I know Jess had told us that not all of the kids under the house were nice. I didn’t know if one of them would do something to him or the therapist if they said something wrong. We know that these spirits have powers but we don’t see much of them through the series, and really only one time is that power used against the protagonists. The thought of the spirits just lashing out suddenly because of some ignorant remark kept me holding my breath every Homework scene and therapy scene.
Last thing I’ll say is that I don’t think Dean was necessary for the story. He didn’t really add or detract anything. He’s just there.
With the Clarks, it was kinda too obvious and the way the therapist discovered it felt kinda dumb. Like, one would think she would at least notice that the heads in the windows matched how Jess drew the Clarks. They were way too big of a chekhov's gun to not be the threat. Sweet old couples don't exist in horror like this. There's not enough flaws that could get them killed if they're just a sweet old couple. And owning the house before them? A little too obvious.
I really liked the ending though. It's really refreshing to see good triumph over evil in a medium where the opposite is often true.

Pixels After Dark also does reviews and analysis of analog horror series, he even got to interview a couple of the creators.
I feel like We need more horror where the ghost, while terrifying is just as much a victim as the people being haunted, anyone got more suggestions for something like that?
Del Toro is a good place to start since that dual role of ghosts is a theme in Crimson Peak, The Devils Backbone and The Murmuring

They vary in how they cover the ghosts and some of them focus more on horror and scariness than storytelling but overall they basically have the same idea when looking at ghosts

With so many horror series ending with some ominous final message or feeling of doom, it's nice to get one with a genuinely happy ending once in a while.

Something that really gets me about this series is how the ghosts and the Clarks are depicted. This series had a very rare thing for me, which was to present something that I found really, genuinely, viscerally disturbing... I cant think of much else that did that, aside from GHE. When Mia was introduced, the drawing of her came out of nowhere, and there's something just so fundamentally distressing about that particular drawing that really got me good. It's hard to explain exactly what did it... part of it was the drawing itself, it's just awful in a way that's hard to define, and then it gets more awful when you think of what Jess must have seen. Sure, Mia is by far the most positive of the spirits, protective of Jess, and only wants to help, but based on Jess' drawings, the form Mia took was absolutely horrific. Granted, Mia isnt the most messed up of the spirits... that definitely goes to Kate, with the arms going all over the place, but Mia was the one that got me the most.
And then there was the Clarks. Yeah, they werent super unique as villains, but what gets me about them was how they see it all. They say things like "it was just business", and "of course we didnt want to kill them, we never wanted to see a child in pain", and it really shows to me that they had convinced themselves that they really hadnt done anything wrong. They felt no guilt as they were like, well, we had no control over what the guys the kids were sold to did with them. Of course, they then show that they did even more, with having murdered Adam and planning to kill the rest of them. I wonder if they would have tried to rationalize any guilt from that away as well. If they hadnt gotten obliterated, that is.
The one thing that did bother me was the ending... mostly good, but I found it very odd that Jess would later not remember it. It just seemed like such a massive event that it would stick to her for good, probably requiring a lot of therapy as time went on. So the "oh, she just doesnt know it happened, she's fine, no problem" seemed a bit out of place to me.
Spectacular series overall though. I'm glad you covered it here, I never would have found it otherwise. That whole channel looks like an absolute goldmine of horror content, I cant wait to watch all the rest of the stuff there.
Jess remembered the incident, however Carol and Dean didn't. It may also be a means of blocking out trauma. For Jess, the incident wasn't fully traumatic, she had met Mia, and the others, who for the most part were friendly. As for Carol and Dean, they didn't really meet them, they only saw them as torturing Jess. Same reason why the therapist remembers the incident, she had met them under relatively friendly circumstances, with Jess acting as a bridge between the children and Julia. She saw them as the victims they were, and what their motives are. It was traumatic sure, but she helped Jess and her family, not to mention the children, why should she forget? The only actively traumatic thing that happens to Julia was the Clarks at the house.
It’s nice that we got a happy ending. I always like horror stories that end on a wholesome note without spoiling the fear from earlier
I like how it has a fairly happy ending, the spirits move on and Jess speaking for the first time
I love how the ghosts look like the people after the ‘this hole was made for me’ story. Those still gross me out.

Children fantasy of ghost are fascinated. you know if you see a shadow in your house, just walk towards it. never be afraid of something that doesn't exist.

Im so incredibly thrilled that vintage 8 is getting attention. Their videos are amazing, well produced and spooky in the best way. The tangi virus series and really anything set in tangipahoa are my personal favorites

One thing on the twist of it being the Clark’s, in the individual uploads some people commented on figuring that out and got hearts from vintage eight, so figuring out the puzzle and the twist early seems encouraged.
It was. The twist for me was WHY they were doing it.
If you're ever looking for something different, this account is currently hosting an analog horror series set in the JJBA universe. It's like 13-14 episodes in, midway through there's a style change that kinda makes it an experimental animation/analog horror series. But yeah like if anybody ever wanted that, it's here lol.
I've been a fan of Vintage Eight since I discovered Tangi Virus. It's nice seeing a channel so large covering it!

The lights out clip scared me. I watched that movie like 8 years ago and recognized it as soon as I seen it. I was like 6 years old and it still scares me to the point of me never wanting to watch it again.
Okay but like rewatching cuz just- I’m studying art therapy- this story hits an itch. I love ghosts and wanna help kids very badly. This story HITS AN ITCH (and can relate to- well- breeze on) either way!!! Very much appreciate you sharing this and all the work that goes into everything you do
yeah, same. i love stories that are unapologetic in their darkness but in a way that's conscientious of victims. i survived some terrible things in childhood, and it can be weird/upsetting that a lot of stories with that kind of subject matter (murder, violence, CSA, trafficking, etc) are primarily gratuitous, made for people who just want the spectacle. there's nothing inherently _wrong_ with that, people can make what they make and like what they like, and i've enjoyed plenty of those stories myself! but the trend is upsetting. these are real things that happen to real children - where are the stories that acknowledge that?
well, here is one. it's respectful enough that it doesn't feel alien to my experience as a survivor. the narrative treats the children with care and justice. and that is nice.

I just watched the children under the house last night, surprised to see this video the day after. The children under the house kinda sticks with me due to the fact I believe most children can understand from a perspective of what Jess went through. Just imagination running wild but maybe just maybe what children see aren’t all just fiction. I’d love to know more about Dean too, he reminds me of myself with the phone and blah blah blah drawing. I also wish there wasn’t a happy ending, more of a neutral ending would have been nice. It made it feel unrealistic which it obviously is but I’d love more of a ending that makes me wonder. I also can’t believe the Clark’s did all this like what?? 😭😭
I love Vintage Eight’s videos. They have a slight realism to it. From personal experience, I can relate. I have seen “spirits” when I was a child. They were harmless. One levitated a popcorn bowl and the other was a kid in a oversized orange hoodie in my school’s library. Of course, my parents didn’t believe me when I told them.
I called my Mimi, my mom’s mom, and asked her if kids could see dead people. She said kids have a wild and overactive imagination, but it’s possible. She then mentioned a possibly haunted doll she had when she lived in my house, when my mom and aunt were kids.
I then asked my cousin about it and she confirmed she did see ghosts that were in the basement of my great aunt’s house before she moved. My cousin was six when she saw them and said it is the reason she doesn’t go in the basement. The basement looks like a comfy man cave. Carpeted floors, a bar, tv, and a big couch, so it didn’t look creepy. My brother was even afraid to go in the basement, despite there being a party or if I’m in there.
As for the drawing aspect, when I was working at a daycare, it was before the day started, so the kids were playing with toys or coloring. Those kids are absolutely delightful and fun. One wanted me to color with her, so I got a coloring page for us, and we started. I was coloring in the picture, while she doodled on the back. She doodled a tall black figure with a creepy smile. I was unnerved and asked her what she drew. She said it watches her sleep every night and that it’s a friendly shadow. I have seen something similar like that in the corner of my room. I just chuckled and kept coloring.

You should check out the Monument Mythos! It's a really good series, continuing on today with the Nixonverse and such. It's a good take on the analog horror scene, and even comedic at times. It's really great and underrated.
I watched it a few weeks ago and it is now one of my faves when it comes to analogue horror.
If I could, I'd like to recommend a few series that I'd like to see you cover when you have the opportunity to in the near future.

For an analog horror series. It had a happy ending
22:22 Yeah moving and the whole concept of it... been something I went through too... for me it was moving from "the land down under" which I'd already been living at for 10 years(Melbourne, in case you're curious), to the United States(The state of Massachusetts, ironically for Sagan, assuming he reads this) for 7 years, only to move back to the land down under after all that...
Definitely not a terrifying concept in of itself, but the underlying sense of loss is absolutely palpable(or atleast it is for me) - the loss of friends who you only kept up with in-person, your identity, and more...
revolving around that opening, I never thought of the scariness as haunting, I always thought of more logical and reasonable possibilities like fear of home invaders, hidden cameras, and snakes.
In my opinion, I feel that The Macabre Experiments needs some more attention. Sure, on the surface, it's typical, however making a story using Creepypastas in an analog horror and making me interested in characters such as Jeff the Killer makes me excited for how this series will continue. It brings up spore based supernatural mystery and brings up many eerie elements, so please I recommend checking it out

Probably my fave analog horror series rn is the Vita Carnis series about living meat. So unique and horrifying, I love it.
Thank god this creator is getting attention, been watching their stuff for a while and it’s very underrated
This reminds me of the oddly horrifying and violent things I drew as a kid to vent my then undiagnosed paranoia, anxiety, and autism. There's a lot of psychological torture and brainwashing in my early comics. No clue why, but I totally plan to reference them in my own horror comedy webcomic now.

So there is this underrated horror web series called the Monument Mythos by Mister Manticore, mostly taking place around the early 30s and late 60s with a few exceptions. In this there is something in the Monuments across America, I won't spoil anything as I recommend you give it a watch but its quite interesting, this web series is actually alternate history, and even references our own history. The series went with a minimalist style, having still shots, drawings, simple animation, etc, but man does he nail this style of storytelling. It's still currently being made. Its season 2 ties into another much smaller web series called Corner Folk, made by the same guy. You should make a video of it.

I love the ending so much! (Even if the series itself is really messed up)
So, just checked out The East Patch, and I was not disappointed. Such a wholesome watch, with some unnerving aspects here and there. Definitely left some questions to be answered though.

Welcome Home is definitely up your alley, there's so much love and care put into it and breathes some air into the oversaturated mascot horror genre. Night Mind's done both a video and live stream covering it already too ^^
Love seeing vintage eight getting the love they deserve!!!! As for a suggestion of series, UrbanSPOOK's "Faces" series is absolutely wonderful and horrifying.
It's hard to find horror that has a somewhat good ending but I'm so glad I found your video! Love the analysis!
