Great and informative video yet again... glad to see you haven't fallen off the edge of the known world in your travels after all... and that you're very much alive...
It appears that dealerships don't have mechanics anymore, they have computer technicians. They just plug the diagnostics tool in your vehicle and follow instructions on what part to change. The old art of diagnosing what the problem is, is dying. I have been a victim of dealerships too. That is why I invested a lot of money buying tools and I fix my own vehicles. The time it takes me to travel to the dealership and back home, is the time I can use to educate myself how to fix my vehicles while drinking a cup of coffee.

Hi Greg another much needed video. Around this time we were coming back from Wales. We stopped for a break on the M4 and unfortunately the starter motor gave in. So we ended up towing it to a garage for a repair and went for a full service including fuel filter ( which wasn't needed as we haven't done that many miles and the van has been sitting for a long time) Long story short. The starter motor got fixed but the service turned to be complete disaster; too much oil, too much coolant, and fuel leak at the fuel filter due to a damaged pipe (wasn't damaged before). Now watching this video I am pretty confident I can do it all myself. So thank you. Might want to do my breaks if your mate is up for it. Enjoy Scotland! The Truma will keep you toasty ;) (The candle guy)
What an incredible video. It seems main dealerships cannot be trusted unless you personally know the mechanic, to carry out reliable work on your vehicle. Really Greg, thank you for this and thank you as well Mark.
@@GregVirgoe I wanted to ask - how did you obtain your Truma appliance? I'm moving to the USA and plan to convert a RAM Promaster and wanted to use a Truma combi with iNet capabilities, but they seem to only sell to OEMs, how did you overcome this? Anyway, thank you for replying!
Great video Greg, really enjoyed it. Shoddy work by the dealer to not check all four glow plugs were pulling current. Easily tested with a clamp meter or Fluke. Likely that two of the old glow plugs shorted to ground, blowing the two fuses.
Love your attention to detail. so heres something worth sharing, phosphoric acid then wash then lacquer on all the little rusty bits in the engine bay halts most rust and enables future inspection for degradation as its not hidden by pigment. also works great on underside parts of tow hitches etc. Rusty tools look great when treated this way.

another honest and informative video from Greg,,and for anyone with a sprinter ,again more free info that could save you time and money ,sprinters are the best but expensive when they have probs,,i have just had a lack of power problem and asumed it was turbo related fortunately my pal is a mechanic(old school, backstreet garage and 50years in the game) and he suspected the inlet manifold was the root of the problem they are plastic!!,and yes he was spot on,the gasket was shot and the manifold was split + a mounting pin was snapped off that needed drilling out and helicoiling plus , an injector with the black death and a new injector leak off pipe, gaskets filters and labour ,all in £800 inc vat,,,dread to think what it would have cost at a merc dealership!!!!.goes like the proverbial now.
I was once towing a caravan from London to Lancashire in the depths of winter. Car went into limp mode on the motorway in the middle of the night. I couldn’t keep driving so called for rescue, which took three hours to arrive. We were stood out of the car (for safety, as advised) on the side of the M1, in snow at -2C temp. Then we had two changes of recovery truck as they relayed us 250 miles home. The cause of the problem was a faulty sensor, nothing wrong with the engine itself. Cost of repair about £60. The joys of motoring... 😄
so helpful ,thanks i have a glowplug light that stays on for a couple of minutes after engine starts so recon ill check the glow plug control module ,you neve know
excellent video as usual and very timely as I'm having same issue at the mo, my mechanic suggests that my cause is the turbo vacum actuator pin sticking as it's carboned up inside! we will see but your vid going through complete system makes things much clearer and I am sure will help out a lot of people! Another nice one Greg. So glad you’re not trying to bash out a video every few days just for the sake of it like some of the other van people on here. Quality will always out and you’re the standard reference for van builders.
Here I was, just a couple of days ago thinking, I wonder where Greg Virgoe's been? And, bam, he's back! So good to see another video from you, and so glad to see that you got the van all sorted. Everyone needs a Mark for a friend. Mate, you did a brilliant job servicing Greg and Lou's van home. Especially the bits about the turbo solenoids and the glow plug module. At the start of the video, the frustration was all over your face. I was talking to the screen, saying, "Greg, surely you of all people have an OBDII reader in your vehicle!" Then, bam, you remembered you had one and put it to good use. I wonder, though, why it didn't throw a code on the glow plug module, as well. Anyway, I'm so glad for the update on your situation, and for another wonderful video, as usual. Cheers...
Hello Mark 👋🏼😊. Yes it is difficult to find a trustworthy repairman these day, word of mouth is the best way to go. Pleased that you & Lou are back on the road 😊
Good to see you back and on form. I suspect there'll be quite a few watching this who have similar tales to relate of receiving poor quality service from the main dealers while being required to pay through the nose for it. Thanks for highlighting these issues.
Brilliant to have you back Greg ... rather selfish of me as I know you've been busy with real life but when the notification popped up I can't wait to hear your latest ... thank you for sharing.
Correct as usual... main dealer waste of time... good logical diagnosis well done Greg another great video ... hopefully you guys get to Devon sometime...
High Greg The first Sprinter I had, 2002 313. Did 192000 miles in three years, the only non part to be replaced was one injector. From a cold start it sounded if it was running on three cylinders, but it only did it for about 20-30 seconds. Mercedes did replace this FOC has they had done all the services from new and by that time we had another five from them. Regarding the parking brake I have had about six Volvo cars and two Mercedes with the same type of brake systems, on the Volvos with a hand brake I used to use to once a week has a foot.brake Just applying from about twenty mph to a standstill this did keep the drums clean and also held the car on a hill or with a caravan on the back. The parking brake pedal system has used by Mercedes is a bit more awkward has pedal when pushed down has to be released by a pull handle on the dash but it still keeps the drum clean and the system working. It’s surprising how many people with automatic cars never use the parking brake especially the foot operated systems. Good luck on your future trips. Stephen
Thanks for taking the time to make another interesting video. I had trouble with hand brake shoes and took a while to find out some aftermarket brands use normal brake lining material which is too hard and glazes up like yours did. Genuine, in my case Volvo, were much softer and worked right away. Also had trouble with binding brakes after I used copper slip on the slide pins, this can gum up as I found smoke pouring out! Use silicone grease and it wont bind. Hope my tips are useful, they are both hard learned. Looking foward to the next video. Cheers!
Another great video Greg. I'm surprised you didn't do the service yourself. Funny I wouldn't think twice about a service but wouldn't be comfortable building a van. Would love your mechanics details we are in your area. Finding a good garage at fair prices is difficult.
Mark is primarily there to help with the turbo and glow plug problem. It made sense for him to help while he was there. I would normally do it myself 😊 If you PM me your contact details on social media I will forward them onto Mark
So true (finding trustworthy help)! My ‘07 Sprinter’s in shop 1 week now, took forever just to get the 13-year-old turbo out because it needs the oil cooler & seals replaced. Parts a bit cheaper in the US, but service: wow. I’ll update on it later. Hopefully not too much later. (Thankfully not living in it lately.)
Hi Greg been watching your video's with great interest love your build and have learnt a lot about building a camper the right way. I have had three new sprinter's all high roof long wheel base 313cdi from Orwell trucks tend to keep them four years at around 150k, MY 08/11/15 plate when its time to change I keep thinking of a conversion unfortunately there a bit worn. Repairing heavy plant construction equipment. Owell sales great but servicing ... a fare few problems ! (not the time or place). Great vans. Only real reliability problems with the 2011 @ 120k the boost pipe split going to the intercooler and around 135k the van stopped and would only run for a second, turned out to be the injector wiring loom earthed out on the engine. 2015 model they changed both pipe and loom. now have a Vito extra long wheel base 190cdi and when it's work time is up, thanks to you it will get converted ! 👌👍😊
So far, with our van, we've had good experience with Vancare, Site 10 Grangefield Industrial Estate, Pudsey, Leeds LS28 6QW. Will be nice to have a trusty contact in the South East, will PM you for the details, Mr Virgoe. Glad you fixed it all. "DOING IT ALL YOURSELF COS YOU WANT IT DONE RIGHT!" PS Love your videos and your style. And top marks to your friendly cameralady :)
Awww glad you got it all sorted and good to see you posting a video as been thinking of you. How are you guys doing? I'm glad I have a Purdie for the van stuff but this video is very simple and helpful and I should probably learn how to do these types of jobs really! Looks like you're going to need to make some space for the silver plaque! Congratulations on 100k subscribers 👏👏👏
Hi Greg. Ta for another excellent and helpful video. Just wondering... While my parents were still alive I used to drive up from Germany to north Manchester frequently in my merc. Had problems once. Tried the UK dealers, same experience as you. Didn't want to know, fully booked etc. But they said use the europe wide breakdown service. Only condition was that the last service was done by a dealer and that the next one wasn't overdue. Called, gave them my details. They called me back from Germany and seemed to check on their computer systems and there was soon a really helpful RAC guy there. Diagnosed. Faults cleared. Off to the dealers for a new part (which I did have to pay for) and even fitted it for me. No other costs as I didn't have to pay for fitting... Was really impressed. Not sure if it applies to vans, but worth checking cos you did a merc service some time before you went to europe - or was that just for the cold start problem they didn't fix.
Hi Greg, really good video, I have my Vivaro in at the garage at the moment, it wouldn't start and what initially was a fuel pump, it's escalated into a recon engine, new fuel pump, new injectors, turbo, and other bits coming to around £5k. A lot but I love the van and couldn't get another for the price..... Now guess what... it wont start and has had to go to a specialist ... Hy Ho it's a good job I like van travelling. ..... Keep making the content, its always a pleasure to watch them. Cheers, Dave

Always at the most inconvenient time. But glad you got home safe in the end. 😃
so helpful ,thanks i have a glowplug light that stays on for a couple of minutes after engine starts so recon ill check the glow plug control module ,you neve know
its a really simple check and easy to replace.
excellent video as usual and very timely as I'm having same issue at the mo, my mechanic suggests that my cause is the turbo vacum actuator pin sticking as it's carboned up inside! we will see but your vid going through complete system makes things much clearer and I am sure will help out a lot of people!
ATB Shane👍
Nice one Greg, really is key to have a mechanic you can trust 👍🏼 kind of need them tucked away under the bed 😀
Not sure I want Mark in bed with us but I get what you mean 😂😃👍🏼
Devon is lovely. enjoy .. Great roads. Have a good one and there are many who will help you if need be..
You would have seen in the rest of the video, we never made it to Devon. Maybe some other time.
@@GregVirgoe Many friends there and they will fix cheaper mate.
@@GregVirgoe Not being funny. Sounds like you bought a nut. Love your work and experience, I thank you. Get a truck, 7.5 with a diesel and run it on veg oil. .

We appreciate all the help you've given us and still are brother 🙏👍💜
Brilliant video Greg.....proving yet again that 'Dealers'....have employees, how well are they really 'qualified'....This fab video enables all us Sprinters owners to be very much aware...'qualified' by your excellent video of how to solve these potential problems. Thank you. Tony and Carolyn
Great stuff Greg again!
😊 Thank you
Another nice one Greg. So glad you’re not trying to bash out a video every few days just for the sake of it like some of the other van people on here. Quality will always out and you’re the standard reference for van builders.
Hay Greg Good To See you Back
A few checks for you to do Mel!
Hello there Mel.,, I've post a question for Greg maybe you could answer it too as u have a sprinter too
Always good to see you mate 😁😁👍🏼
Cheers...
You can’t beat a Greg Fix It video !!!
Hello Mark 👋🏼😊. Yes it is difficult to find a trustworthy repairman these day, word of mouth is the best way to go. Pleased that you & Lou are back on the road 😊
Normal service will resume soon, thanks for watching 😊😊
@@GregVirgoe 🤗💜
Great video Greg , I like all off your video`s thank you
Thanks for watching them all. Really appreciated
Good to see you've posted again, there are some good vloggers out there but i miss my dose of down to earth useful facts and info Greg style.
That’s very kind of you. Thank you 😊
Hi Greg first timer love the video great yo follow your progress
Looking forward to the next one keep it up 👏👏👊
Good to see you back and on form. I suspect there'll be quite a few watching this who have similar tales to relate of receiving poor quality service from the main dealers while being required to pay through the nose for it. Thanks for highlighting these issues.
Good one. very interesting to see how you analysed the turbo problem and sorted the handbrake issue👍
Very interesting video. I’m so happy all is ok and you are back on the road again. The hand brake adjustment was my favorite. Thank you Greg😊
Brilliant to have you back Greg ... rather selfish of me as I know you've been busy with real life but when the notification popped up I can't wait to hear your latest ... thank you for sharing.
You’ll be pleased to know there will be much more videos released over the next few weeks 😃
Amazing, Mark makes it look so simple, I bet it’s not though. Thank you Greg.
As always, extremely useful information 👍😄
Nice to hear from you Gary. Am currently on my way up to Scotland 😊 let’s chat on social media 😊😊😊😊😊
Greg Virgoe excellent, I have you on WhatsApp, I’ll ping I message later 👍😄
Another great video Greg
Thanks very much 👍🏼
Great vid Greg ....sorted 👍....good to have you back .
Well done bud, glad you got it fixed! 👍
Really disappointing that Mercedes didn’t pick up on the glow plug fault. Well done to your guy Mark.
Great vlog and this is a huge money saver,, I am going to give it a go myself thanks for giving me the confidence to try . Stay safe 👍🚙
Most of these tasks are not difficult, will save yourself a fortune in labour costs.
Loved this video! You explained it all so well.👏👍
Pleased you liked it 👍🏼👍🏼
Nice one Greg 👍
Thanks for watching 👍🏼
Was wondering what had happened to you. Nice to see you online again. 👍🏼
Sorry just been really busy with work and as we are not travelling stuck for content
Correct as usual... main dealer waste of time... good logical diagnosis well done Greg another great video ... hopefully you guys get to Devon sometime...
High Greg
The first Sprinter I had, 2002 313.
Stephen
Now it’s been adjusted it’s 100 times better, thank you 😊
Good tip on applying parking brake from 20mph once in a while Stephen. Thanks, greatly appreciated.
Cheers!
Tip for Sprinter maintenance. Always keep a Mark handy ! 😉 Great video. 👍
I would normally do it myself 😊
If you PM me your contact details on social media I will forward them onto Mark
@@GregVirgoe I figured as much.
Good vlog has the van started easier in the mornings you are better doing it your self if you can
Yes it’s so much better starts first turn of the key in seconds. 👍🏼😃
As always...excellent..
Thank you 😊
Hi Greg been watching your video's with great interest love your build and have learnt a lot about building a camper the right way. 👌👍😊
Keep me updated on your progress I would be interested to see what you do with it. 😊👍🏼
I will it was new last year so only another three years of working life before it can be converted.🤣🤣
"DOING IT ALL YOURSELF COS YOU WANT IT DONE RIGHT!"
PS Love your videos and your style.
Not sure if it applies to vans, but worth checking cos you did a merc service some time before you went to europe - or was that just for the cold start problem they didn't fix.
good see you back puting vidios up
Great video Greg
Thank you 😊
Mark is a nice friend to have.
Another Masterclass Greg!!!
Another great vid.
Glad to see that you and Lou are doing well.
We all need a Mark in our lives.
Any news of the cigar box?
Keep safe and healthy 🙃
Yes, have one video being edited now and then the cigar box will be next. Not long now 😊 they will both be out this week
Greg, I had this problem, switch off and start again all good for temporary until you can have a better look.
