One of his early great songs that didn't get the appreciation it deserves. I miss Harry so much, there has never been anyone who can take his place musically or as a person. Thank God we still have his music! Thank you for posting!
Nothing he's done gets enough appreciation except for by a few. You never hear him on the radio. I got to see him in Hartford one time. A treasured memory.
I know that everyone has their own musical preferences, and taste is subjective, etc., but what kind of soulless beast could give this achingly gorgeous song a thumbs down?
My favorite song off of Heads & Tales. Harry with the dulcet sound of Big John Wallace. This song never fails to make me cry and at the same time be so grateful for the time I have been alive. Miss ya', Harry. Write home, will ya'?
it's been two years since you wrote this comment but it resonated so strongly with me I couldn't help but thank you for conveying exactly how I felt, too.
In the summer of 1981 me and a bunch of friends went camping in the Catskill Mountains which were right where we grew up in Upstate NY. It was one of many camping trips we had made, but after spending about five days in the woods we went back into town and stopped at a bar in Highland Mills, NY called Murray’s Irish House to drink a few beers. While sitting there drinking beer and talking the TV was on and the news broke into the regular programming to announce the death of Harry Chapin in a car accident at the Jericho Turnpike on the Long Island Expressway. We all sat there stunned by the news, as he was a highly popular and well known singer. I’ll never forget that moment.
I was 17 years old and had been camping out with high school friends in the woods for a week in upstate New York (Orange County). We came back to town and the news of Chapin’s death was all over.
Simply in its simplicity one of the best. I so miss Harry, but I just have to put those thoughts away. He will always fill my tomorrow. he left nothing behind.
Saw him twice in concert. It was as if we were in his living room with him. And a friend who lived near Harry said that he would go to the local school and play for the kids.
The Lyrics Turning on my pillow, thinking kind of strange. The color is of midnight in this room. The cars outside are coughing and it's kind of hard to sleep and there's neon out the window, not the moon. And it was just an any old kind of day, The kind that comes and slips away, The kind that fills up easy my life's time. The night brought any old kind of dark, I heard the ticking of my heart. Then why'm I thinking somethings left behind? I whistled round today and I skipped off a footloose jig to the hurdy gurdy music of the street. I looked past those rooftops and I saw the cloudless sky, But I keep on asking why my life is passing by, And I'm left up high and dry, But it ain't no good to cry, So I shrug my useless sigh, And I trust to things that other days will meet. And it was just an any old kind of day, The kind that comes and slips away, The kind that fills up easy my life's time. The night brought any old kind of dark, I heard the ticking of my heart. Then why'm I thinking somethings left behind? The night has had it's laughing, when the street lights blind the stars, So now it's shedding rain to sing it's sorrow, It's time for me to sleep and to rest these thoughts away, There's gonna be another day, hey! when things will go my way, And there's other things to say, And there's other songs to play, And there'll be time enough for thinking come tomorrow. And it was just an any old kind of day, The kind that comes and slips away, The kind that fills up easy my life's time. The night brought any old kind of dark, I heard the ticking of my heart. Then why'm I thinking somethings left behind? Songwriters: Harry F. Chapin
I’ve been experimenting lately, with different relaxing tunes from my calming apps. Last night I tried the Mississippi River sounds, and it did not help anything; it might’ve made it worse actually. (I also sleep with my fan on most times during the summer, take of that what you will!) Does anyone want to listen to the sounds, while we are role-playing?
This is a good song to accompany Jake Chambers in Stephen King's Wastelands when he's walking through NYC trying to find the door that will lead back to Roland of Gilead and their quest for the Dark Tower.
Saw him perform this first Earth Day Northwestern University Evanston Illinois. I understand he wrote this for that occasion, the very first Earth Day.

So well said.

My brother recorded with Harry... we both mourned his passing... in memorial... timeless songs...
Harry Chapin's songs, especially this one, got me through many many bad times. It's good to hear him again.
I miss him so much ... the stories he could tell live :::
The song of the day for sure. Likely tomorrow as well.
Miss you Harry.

One of my favourite songs of all time. Genius songwriter. Beautiful mind.
And there’ll be time enough for thinkin come tomorrow
His music lives on 🙏🏼
Great song writer, listened to his music while in high school, brings back so many memories
One of those beautiful hidden gems...
Jonathan..that is so true..and to think how many hidden gems there are..what matters is you were aware of it......
Played the Heads & Tales album a hundred times in college. His songs are still relevant and moving.
Somewhere in the past I must've loved this song 'cos when it started I knew every word. It's nice to meet it again. Thank you.

Love singing Harry's songs to crowds who have never heard them. The reaction is always the same, who is that, I think I heard before, I love it"!
I’m crying
Today was just ordinary except for Harry, and I like to think I will have him tomorrow.
I will never forget when and where I was when I heard Harry had died. Been a long time since I have heard this one.... wonderful!
Uncle LarryB Same here. I was a student at Northeastern University and I heard of his death. What a loss!
Just reading a paper
Home on a train.
It said you had died.
God Harry, why you?

Mr. Chaplin never fails to make you feel while he tells a story song of his.
Deep inside I think a lot of people feel this way.
So many memories go with this song, an old BF introduced me to this album more than 45 years ago and this song was there for me when we broke up.
60 years old now. This album never gets old! My childhood
Keep your head up, tomorrows another day
Harry's cause was a calling of my own heart. My empathy went to his wife and kids, in a sense he was the DJ AT WOLD
Awesome RIP harry

Reminiscing on this album that I first heard in ‘72 at age 12. Amazing, after all of these decades, I can still remember the lyrics.
I LOVE this beautiful genius of a man
Saw him twice in concert. It was as if we were in his living room with him. And a friend who lived near Harry said that he would go to the local school and play for the kids.
We loved seeing him at the Garden State Art Center from the seventies. And still listen to him often.
Prolific poets like Harry are difficult to comprehend..the poignancy of each song is immense..this one is of such emotion as to be hard to fathom..

my favorite cut
Brings back some good old memories :-)
One of the best. Song and performer.
Awesome album! Underrated but sublime!
I heard Taxi but I could not remember This Song ..... Saw I'm perform at Western Iil. University in 1975
One of my favorites
😢😭 i miss my mom.
Thank YOU again :-)
Mine too.
Incredible
My dad's sister's husband is dying. My uncle who is the smartest of all of them.
God gave me this song for him, my uncle Larry.

Big John Wallace!
A song to an audience of one...
