- Peter, Paul and Mary perform "Wedding Song (There Is Love)" live at their 25th anniversary concert in 1986. Now, two and a half decades later, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the formation of the group in the famed Greenwich Village, this joyous yet deeply moving live concert is being first released on DVD by Shout! Factory.

"Wedding Song (There Is Love)" is a song written by Noel Paul Stookey in the fall of 1969 and first performed at the wedding of Peter Yarrow - Stookey's co-member of Peter, Paul and Mary - to Mary Beth McCarthy at St Mary's Catholic Church in Willmar MN: Stookey was best man at the ceremony which took place in the evening of October 18, 1969.
Stookey had written the song on a midnight flight between Peter, Paul and Mary concert dates in San Jose and Boston setting out to write a song for Yarrow's wedding which would convey Stookey's Christian convictions while respecting Yarrow's Jewish faith.
According to Stookey "the melody and the words [of "Wedding Song"] arrived simultaneously and in response to a direct prayer asking God how the divine could be present at Peter's wedding." (The first two lines of the song's second verse: "A man shall leave his mother and a woman leave her home/ And they shall travel on to where the two shall be as one", is largely a paraphrase of the text of Genesis 2:24: "Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.") Believing he could not take personal credit for composing "The Wedding Song", Stookey set up the Public Domain Foundation which since 1971 has received the song's songwriting royalties for charitable distribution.

Lyrics:
He is now to be among you at the calling of your hearts
Rest assured this troubadour is acting on His part.
The union of your spirits, here, has caused Him to remain
For whenever two or more of you are gathered in His name
There is Love,
there is Love.
Well a man shall leave his mother and a woman leave her home
They shall travel on to where the two shall be as one.
As it was in the beginning is now and til the end
Woman draws her life from man and gives it back again.
And there is Love,
there is Love.
Well then what's to be the reason for becoming man and wife?
Is it love that brings you here or love that brings you life?
For if loving is the answer, then who's the giving for?
Do you believe in something that you've never seen before?
Oh there is Love,
there is Love.
Oh the marriage of your spirits here has caused Him to remain
For whenever two or more of you are gathered in His name
There is Love,
there is Love.
I am 62 years old and have suffered from depression and anxiety all my life. Listening to Peter, Paul and Mary reduces my symptoms by 80%.😂😂😂😁😁😁. I miss Mary so much. 😢😢😭😭😭😭😭
I, also, am 62. I lost my wife to cancer a few years ago. Whenever I hear this song, I think of her. ❤😢💔
I feel you 💕
I was never a fan of them, but I have listened to 4 songs of there in a row. You know what? My anxiety is lower too. I'm 71.
I miss the simpler day.......
I'd say that's Jesus and His Word
In my 85 years I don't believe I've ever heard a more beautiful song, lyrics and melody. It just makes my heart sing and think of my late husband who I will love until I draw my last breath.
I played this at our wedding. Married 38 short years. A DD took his life 5/19/19❤💔💔
@@dianapotts4970 May our Lord God mend your broken heart. It is very hard to lose someone so dear; love will endure and last forever. Just as Jesus Christ said to us, "do not fear for I am with you, be not dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand," He will always be with you.
Listen to Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong with the spoken intro you will like it as well
@@jamesjohnston5796 I agree, It's A Wonderful World is truly a beautiful song. I have the song on a CD with other songs from that era. I can't find songs that near;y come close today, by comparison.
@@jowood1566 other songs in that same vein are A Change Is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke and People Get Ready by Curtis Mayfield and Someday We'll All Be Free by Donny Hathaway
Paul Stookey wrote to me personally when I wrote him a letter and asked how he played this song. I did not realize at the time that he tuned his 12 string down a step and a half and played it with G, C, and D shaped chords. Beautiful song written by a beautiful soul! God bless him.
This is the song my Grandpa sang at my wedding as I walked down the aisle. Love this song so much!
What a great memory!
Played it at my wedding, May 25, 1975. This just came to me this afternoon. May 22, 2024. Love it.
We had this at our wedding, May 31, 1980.
I am 75 years old and married 55 years May 25, 2023. The most beautiful and comforting music/lyrics ever.
My Uncle played guitar 🎸 and sung this song at our wedding almost 45 years ago. 🥰 Uncle Claude was buried yesterday ☹️ He was 82. That song will ALWAYS be special to me!❣️
Anymore, you will have to search the song and play it, this modern world is more destroyed......
But when you do, it will still stir you and move you.
We had a professional Sal Mancini play it for our daughter's wedding years ago in the Colorado mountains.....it resonates in my mind and heart today even more now than it then did then.
It is a timeless, Godly song.
Yes, indeed.
My Uncle Steve sang it for my wedding in 1988. ❤ Thankfully, he's still with us, but his twin sister, Aunt Nancy, just passed away from pancreatic cancer. 😭 My husband and I divorced, but this will always be my wedding song.
Blessings on you.
My now departed brother played this at my wedding 45 years ago. An equally gifted musician, this reaches my soul and beyond
This was sung at our church wedding as we lit our unity candle. Still gives me chills as I think about it 37 years later
We chose this song to be played at our wedding 50 years ago. Still listening to it!
A solo performer, no backing band, controls a large crowd with the power of this song. Truly inspired.
Perfect description. I'd have given just about anything to be there that night.
Biblical Song
God gave him this beautiful song... it is woven throughout.

I saw PP&M twice at Laurie Auditorium in San Antonio growing up. I’ve seen some big names in arena concerts but none was as moving as three old people singing to acoustic accompaniment.
My cousin sang this at my wedding in 1995. Such a beautiful song!
About 10 years I was walking to meet my wife and her friend as we were going to a PP & M concert...As I was walking forward much to my surprise Mr Stookey was walking by himself in my direction...I was awestruck and blurted out "You have to do The Wedding Song" He smiled an said he did not know what songs they were going to perform that night. I smiled and walked away mesmiriized...After the 3 did about a 45 minute set and went inside for a break...After about 10 minutes Paul came out solo and made an announcement...He stated that as he was walking to the show a "fan" requested this song....I stood up immediately and balled my eyes out as he proceeded to sing this song....I am quite sure Mr Stookey did this as a favor. God Bless him forever...One of the greatest songs of all time...up there with Hey Jude
This story made me so happy that the singer heard your plea to sing the song, and then did it, for you-but for every other heart in that concert too. Thank you for sharing this.
Married for 50 years wish I had known this song! Gives me chills!❤️❤️
Not intended to be publicized, this song was a wedding gift to be privately performed for Peter by Noel "Paul" Stookey at his wedding. One of the most beautifully written/composed songs of our time IMO! Timeless❤
I remember him refusing to play it because it was requested...we don't do requests..then he admonished the guy who asked....over 30 years ago and I still remember that dick move!
@@mitchlauner9355 Were you there?
I agree with you on this song, but have to add "First time ever I saw your face" by Ewan MacColl. The two most beautiful songs written in our time (I am 74).
So beautiful - I got all teary-eyed and choked up listening to this. Would that the world would go back to these values! Been married for 49 years now, and still there is love....
This was the first song played at my wedding to my lovely wife of 49 years!!
The most beautiful wedding song ever written.❤❤

This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, both musically and lyrically.
It was one of the two songs we had for our wedding in August 1972. Incredibly beautiful and meaningful
Me too!
There is love
Amen HALLELUJAH…THERE IS PURE HEAVENLY LOVE…AGAPE
@@kathrynlobert659 We played it at our wedding, December, 1974. It's the perfect wedding song, (thus it's name.)
A man shall leave his mother and a woman leave her home...and the two shall be as one
Probably some of the most profound lyrics of the past 50 years
What a beautiful song❤
Quoted from Genesis.
The Words are the LORD's, from the Sacred Scriptures.
Matthew 19:5-6 And God said, 'So a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two will become one body. ' So there are not two, but one. God has joined the two together, so no one should separate them.”
41 years ago (1981) my husband and I got married. This was the song that was played at our wedding in the church. We had a singer and he played the guitar
, and he did a fantastic job. Every time I hear the song I think of that wonderful day. We're still together by the way!
I lost my husband of 40 years on June 11, this song speaks to my lonely heart....
Bless you Mary...... Praying that Jesus brings the peace of God to you through His Spirit dear one.
Very very sorry to hear that. Hopefully this song helps you keep his spirit and all those great memories close to your heart!!
This song Transends time and space. Where ever your dear husband is, Im sure he hears you !
Blessings and much love on you, Mary.
❤️❤️
It was the song at our Wedding in 82. Still brings tears to my eyes. Paul never realized how much it would be used as inspiration for others. Thank you Paul, Thank you God!
The first time I heard it it just blew me aw ay oh how well written and sung it's timel ess and also meaningful lyrics I listen to music like this in today's world 2023 bec ause the music they make now is awful.
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. Every time I listen to it, tears flow freely down my cheeks.
As I understand it ...Paul woke up from a Deep sleep to pen this Wonderful Beautiful song. Truly Inspired. I have my Ten Years Together album which I listened to in my youth and I saw them in concert "50 years together".
I agree! My wife and I had this song at our wedding in 1976!
This song and "First time ever I saw your face" (written by Ewan MacColl) in my opinion, are the most beautiful songs written in the last 100 years .
My wife and I are one of many couples who had this absolute beautiful song played during our wedding ceremony. Thank you Noel Paul Stookey.
I'm 59, and have heard a lot of music, and this is one of the most beautiful songs
I have ever heard!
I couldn't agree more!
My wedding song 42 years ago. A friend played the guitar and sang while I entered the church. It still touches me in some special way. There is love!
Great song indeed!
This was sung at my wedding. I also sung it at my dear friend’s wedding. Absolutely beautiful!!
I remember when this song was first released. I was so deeply touched and as I listened again here after many years it gave me the chills.
Paul was a brilliant song writer with such depth and soul.
Thank you Paul for all you have given us ❤
We need people like this now with their sense of being human and not chasing $$$$$$$$!.
One of the greatest songs ever!
I’m 79 and grew up a big Peter, Paul and Mary fan. I saw them twice in concert.
This solo by Paul, so timeless, always brings the tears, especially now coming up on the 15th anniversary of my husband’s death in 3 days.
Loving us the answer. God bless you all. And good health and fortune for 2022.
Don't know why I'm balling while hearing this song. Very emotional.
On 10/23/2023, my husband of 42 years died. It is now 12/16/2023. #NewWidow
At our wedding reception in 1981, we danced to this as newlyweds. I haven't heard this piece since then -- until just now on the car radio. Tears of joy & sweet memories.❤
My husband and I were married in 1978 and my brother-in-law sang this at our wedding. He sang so beautifully, it was one of my sweetest memories of that day.
I walked down the isle to this song June 21,1997 .... we’ll be married 22 yrs tomorrow 🙏🏻♥️🙏🏻♥️ 🙏🏻There is love 🙏🏻♥️🙏🏻♥️🙏🏻
By coincidence, when me and my bride, Chris, were driving home from the wedding ceremony, this song played on the radio. We were touched.
Beautiful.
31 years this September my wife and I will be married. This was our wedding song. Thank you to Peter, Paul and Mary for this wonderful song
Ours also, 44 years ago. and we still love each other
Are you still married in 2023?
He doesn't just sing he speaks to your soul
One man. One guitar. And a huge crowd listening in abslute silence. It’s a musical miracle.
One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard!
Even though he has probably sang this song many times, he sings it like he has just written a beautiful song and that he cant wait to share it with the world. His facial expressions and the intent behind his eyes really convey that this is a very special song.
Back when there was real music. Not the crap you hear generated today....
I thought the same thing. He is joyful in sharing this song with us!
He wrote this song as a gift to his bandmate, his brother. It has become his gift to the world. One of the purest songs I've ever heard.
I've heard him say that when he wrote the song, he hadn't been a Christian for long and the words were actually written, "I am now to be among you and the calling of your hearts...."
@@CFGossettAbbasHealingArts yeah, if you look for it, I think there is a version on UA-cam with him singing the original words.
People will continue to say something like, "They played this song at my wedding in 2078."
My parents did this song in the church at my wedding. Mommy sang and daddy played the organ ❤
1993!!
1981, Still going strong in 2024.
My wedding song 1989
I think you're absolutely correct! ❤
I am 70 years old and I'm happy to say that in 2 months I'll be married to a woman who's 43 this song epitomizes the feelings we have for each other. I said don't be depressed when the song goes away
I've noticed all the comments about this song being played at so many weddings, and I'd like to add it was played at our wedding too. April 26, 1986. I have to think that Noel Paul is very proud that people love his song so much. 😃
We had it played at our wedding too - July 31, 1987. A tornado hit a neighbouring city that day, unbeknownst to us. Luckily it wasn’t an omen. Lol
"There Is Love" was sung at our wedding on May 31, 1980. Unfortunately M.S. took my wife away 8 years ago in March, 2007. Whenever I hear this, it is a rough fight not to cry, I don't win that fight very often. This song that Noel has given to the world I can't put into words. All I can say is, "Thank you Noel for the memories this song returns to me". Kelly and I had a fantastic 27 years together.
Craig Hickman Man, so sorry for your loss. In a perfect world, everyone would live to be 100 (still healthy) and married couples would all celebrate 70 or 75 years together. It's good to hear you did have 27 wonderful years together .... may all the good memories of your wife sustain you until the time comes when you both are reunited ....
Craig Hickman Your post brought me to tears. I am so very sorry you lost your Kelly so early. My husband and I were married in 1976, when this song was recorded by The Captain and Tenille. We are now married 38 years. Every day is a gift. Thank you for reminding me of that.
God bless you.
+djjim01 Thank you for your kind words. The memories of Kel do sustain me and comfort me. Yes, someday we will be reunited.
+Rick Biggs Don't be sorry. Instead be happy for Kel because she endured the last 2-3 years of her life with essentially no quality of life. She's free of all of the constraints that damnable illness put on her. Kel is free, that's what counts.
Tomorrow is our 48th anniversary! We had friends play this song at our wedding!! So 3:33 beautiful and pertinent to today as it was then.
Was played at our wedding 50 years ago ! Lovey . Humbling
dog died after ten years, hurts so bad, cried again with this,
This song was sung at our wedding in 1979. It's still "Our Song" and always will be. 42 years and counting!
Still the most beautiful and spiritual wedding song ever.

One of my favorites. Exquisitely beautiful. A great man and talent.
Absolutely

I can’t get enough of this song.
God what a beautiful song. Never heard it before. Brings me tears.
A very beautiful song - even more so when my bride sang it to me on our wedding day... nearly 50 years ago
Have played this song at a few weddings just me and my guitar and each time i felt an anointing such a powerful song musically and lyrically. Masterfully Paul thank you and the Lord✌🙏
This song came out well before I was born but this is the song from my parents wedding in 1979. Everytime I hear this song I get misty. So beautiful. If I ever get married this will be my wedding song too.
Same here! My mom's parents were in the choir, who sang this song at their wedding. The first time a secular song was ever sung in that church. It's beautiful. I'm now in choir, and would like the same for my wedding.....someday.
I agree ray
Hope you found him🙏 and the song has been played.
I just saw that I commented on this song 7 years ago. I will be getting married next month and yes, this will be our song ❤️
Are you married yet, Julie? Was this your song? Did it still resonate? It does for me, for my daughter's wedding.
My maid of honor 's dad and sister played this at my wedding. it was beautiful. they practiced for weeks to get it right. can never thank them enough for giving this song to us on our special day.
I can't help but just bawl when I hear this. He is so full of love. He is making sure everyone in the audience feels it. He looks out at all the people in different parts of the concert hall. The fact that he gave this song to public domain speaks more about him than anything else.
Sang at our wedding ......26 years ago and we and it are still going strong . Always been one of my favorites .
My wedding song 35 years ago marriage didn’t last but this song sure did
Mine was 23 years ago. My ex didn't want to be married. 5 years later and we both are able to have a decent relationship. I had this song at my wedding too. So beautiful, I believe this song, The way we were, and We've only just begun I think are the most beautiful songs ever.
As an atheist I can honestly say....this is simply one of THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SONGS ever written! I know it's more of a religious wedding song, but.....yeah, no words.
I don't think religion has any corner on love.
Thank you .....words are naught necessary with this song thank you forsaying
@@bethbrittenbach3301 then who’s the giving for?
Mark, God is Love. Your Creator made you and loves you very much. "Seek and you will find."
These lyrics are open-ended and poetic enough you can still find your own meaning no matter your worldview and belief. Extraordinarily beautiful song.
Unfortunately they don't make songs like this anymore. Beautiful.
As a guitarist, I love the tone of that wonderful 12-string.
I could not imagine a better song for celebrating life, friendship, and spirituality.
One of my all-time favorites. Our Pastor sang it at our wedding.
Sang at wedding when I married my beautiful best friend. Getting close to our 24th anniversary. I love you Jodi
You’re not going to believe me but Peter Paul and Mary popped into my head I was just thinking it didn’t know they existed I thought it had something to do with the Bible. So I searched google and they popped up. So I thought ok they have a message for me, started listening to their songs and they move me blowing in the wind, early morning rain, 500 miles. It’s like they have this strong inner knowing, the answer is and forever will be love. This song especially I’m drawn to like a moth to the flame. He is radiating love onto everyone so desperately longing for it to be whole complete one again. Soon, soon, soon. Love you all. 💗
This is a wonderful song. It evokes feelings with every note and lyric. Pristine and full of power. It is an eternal and everlasting testament to love.
My all-time favorite song. I sang this at my own wedding 50 years ago. Hope to recreate that moment at our 50th Anniversary party this year.
I believe Paul Stookey was truly "Divinely Inspired" in writing this song for his friend, Peter...(So admirable to have 'all proceeds going to Charitable donations, since 1971) ....(Peter, Paul, & Mary songs will last forever....❤) !!!!!
I produced and directed the Peter, Paul & Mary 25th Anniversary Concert. It was a great experience!
I am looking for the comic monologue he gives just before this song. About magazines, and trying to bluff when someone asks him a question when he brain was over at the punch bowl. Do you know of a video of that part? So funny!
@@kathyoverton998 Wow, I definitely remember that!
My brain was at the punchbowl so I say something clever like... perhaps if you rephrased, I could answer more fully.

Thank you.....
Thank you
Thank you!!
Some dear friends sang this song at our wedding in June 1973, 47+ years ago. It always brings a wonderful memory when I hear it. My wife has been battling cancer for 22 years and, sadly, it looks like her fight will be ending later this year. What a treasure this song is for us. I wouldn’t trade this life for anything.
If you want one of the most beautiful wedding songs of all times you are listening to it. Just close your eyes and go with the music and it will take you there on your wedding day. Woman draws her life from man and gives it back again. That's so true. I love you so much darling ❤❤💟💕💞💞💝❤️❤️
In a world full of chaos, hatred and evil where are songs like this to give us strength to overcome ?
This song brings me to tears every time I hear it. My daughter gave me a surprise gift on her wedding day and used this song. So with this song playing from the DJ and with tears of joy streaming down my face I was escorted down the isle by my brother as he did for my wedding day. It was a beautiful ceremony only to be highlighted for me by the gift of my daughter and Noel Paul Stookey.
Married 25 years, this was sung at our wedding. More meaningful than ever. There is love
I am 72 years old and this is a beautiful song
This was my parents wedding song where my mom walked down the aisle and brought tears to my families eyes. Such a beautiful song. May my mom rest in peace. 😢🙏❤️
So beautiful. I'll never forget the first time I heard it in 1978. It was on the radio in my car. And I just had to find and buy that song!!!
I have sung this for countless weddings, still brings chills to me. There is Love.....
Peter Yarrow married my neighbor in Minnesota in 1968.
They performed this song at the wedding which I was privileged to have attended.
married 44 years and this song sung at our wedding. still it is up to you and your spouse.
I'm a "non-believer," not at all religious (spiritually I'm Taoist). That said, this song is one of the most stunningly beautiful I've heard. God is love; Love is God.
I wrote a poem, to the woman that I have loved since 1967, the title of which was "Life is Love; Love is Life."
" I will DRAW all men to me " - Jesus
The Love you feel in the song
is Him drawing you.
Come closer.
I wrote nothing about the Bible. Jesus didn't write anything that we know of. What's your point?
Some things about this song that may help to bring some
understanding and light to this discussion
This song, "There is Love" the Wedding Song was written by
Noel Paul Stookey for his friend, co-band member of "Peter, Paul and Mary" for the wedding of Peter Yarrow.
Noel was a Christian, a follower and believer of Jesus Christ,
Peter was not.
Noel wrote the song from the perspective of his faith. It is filled with
quotes and references from the Bible.
In the song, Noel repeats words Jesus spoke as recorded in the Bible by His followers.
Twice in the song, Noel writes
" whenever two are more are you are gathered in His name "
This is from Matthew 18:20 where Jesus said,
"For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them'
Noel, begins the song with - "He is now to be among you..."
This is a reference to the God that Joel follows. The God of the Bible.
He speaks of a man leaving his mother and a woman leaving her home.
and of two becoming one. This is from the teachings about marriage in the Bible.
Noel writes - " as it was in the beginning..."
He is referring to the marriage of Adam and Eve as recorded in the Bible.
Noel writes that "woman takes her life from man'.
This is from the record in the Bible that man was made first by God
and then Eve was made from a part of man.
Noel also writes in the song
"Do you believe in something that you've never seen before?"
This is from the perspective of his Christian faith of believing in the God of the Bible where it says that "God is Love."
This information is openly available and can be confirmed by searching the internet. Thank you.
If that's what you believe, we have no argument.
Fills a hole in our hearts ... . I believe Stookey's story. The song is the sound of an answered prayer.
I played my guitar and sang this for my wife at our wedding 32 years ago. We were married under a cabana in front of Silver Sands on Grand Cayman (Seven Mile Beach). I have done the same for many weddings but always remember to sing and play for my beloved on each anniversary.
This was the song that was playing as My Dad walked me down the aisle to my waiting Love! Now my husband! Now he has gone to live with our Lord. One day we will meet again!
I'll love this song as long as I can hear it played.
My wife and I had this at our wedding 48 years ago, loved it, and then love it still.
The perfect wedding song from a near perfect singer !!!
It was played at my wedding too and was lovely. So many wonderful memories!

Our main wedding song June 22, 1974! I miss that man so much! I will be so happy when he comes home!
My wedding song..I can’t listen without tearing up
This was the song sung by my husband cousin 35 yrs ago this Nov. which should be a happy day but he passed away going on 2 yrs now and his memorial service is the same date.
I loved Peter Paul & Mary & this song.
Hopefully the pain lessens.
"Wedding Song" and Carpenter's "We've only just begun" are my two favorite wedding songs. Both are pure and simple, very contemplative in nature. Always wanted to have them sung at my wedding, but alas, never found the right girl.
Yeah.
these are the two songs sung at our wedding in 1971. beautiful memories
I will be singing this song at one of my students weddings in Seoul, South Korea on December 2nd. Will be playing it on my Larivée 12 string. I hope that I get through it without crying. She was one of my favorite teaching assistants at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. I seldom felt such joy as when I received a message from her asking me to sing at her wedding. I only hope that this leads to more requests in the future.
Had this played at my wedding 39 years ago...💕
We used it in 1971. The song was still relatively new. Nevermind, it's all good.
He owns this song in every way. Love it now and always have.......Beautiful.....
When ever two or more of you are gathered
in His name , there is love ! 🙏💙
41 years ago today this was chosen and played at our wedding. I play it every year on our anniversary .No song is more special And we're still in love as we were that day 💕

My son and his wife chose this song for there wedding. Going strong 20 years later and centered in Christ.
We had a busker sing this song at our church wedding in the early 1980's. It is one of the most beautiful wedding songs I have ever heard. I had a PP&M album for some years before and this song was on it because Paul Stookey had sung it at Peter's wedding. It has so much meaning on every level, but especially about the love of two people who are committing their lives to each other in marriage. We are still together and love each other dearly. I am 70 years old and my wife is 73. Not long after our wedding we had twins, a boy and a girl. Truly blessed. Thank you Paul Stookey.
Kathy Bordenkircher. This song was played at our wedding on 6/18/90. Next month will be our 28th Wedding Anniversary. Having God in our marriage has helped us through the difficult times and has made the wonderful times even better. I love this song and I always will. It is wonderful being married to your best friend. I love you Dale & I always will.
