The question is this: how many non-East Asian looking people in Shibuya speak Japanese? We did this experiment on a Sunday afternoon and we had a good mix of tourists and non-tourists.
Check out Jackson's channel here: / @nihonjack - Розваги
I actually thought of excluding tourists, but then I realised that a large percentage of non-Asian people you see in Japan are tourists. Also Shibuya is a very popular place amongst local people and tourists alike, so I think what you see in this video is a fairly accurate representation of non-East Asian people in Japan.
Edit: I checked the statistics and it turned out there are more non-Asian non-tourists than non-Asian tourists in Japan in a given moment. It's just non-Asian people we SEE in Tokyo are more likely to be tourists probably because tourists go out more than locals.
Edit2: But if you want to learn Japanese so that when I randomly approach you, you show off your perfect Japanese skill, I can send you some free Japanese lesson. So subscribe here bit.ly/2LijEJr
+That Japanese Man Yuta Loved your video, especially the Italian interview xD
+That Japanese Man Yuta Shibuya is FULL of tourists! I don't think this poll really showed much of anything. I'd be more interested in the results if you had a follow-up question of "Do you live in Japan?" because most of those people probably would have said no, so naturally they wouldn't speak any Japanese, or even need to. I like a lot of your videos, but after seeing this I could only think "残念!"
+That Japanese Man Yuta Wow cool someone from my Country :) officially it's Jōjia jin now, it changed name from Gurujia
+That Japanese Man Yuta I don't know if it's a mistake, but why are Pakistani and the other south Asian guy counted as "Western-looking" people? They don't look Western to me anyway, more South Asian. But that was an interesting video!

Typical Italian grammar Mussolini /s
@@ramdas363 Lmao.
No? If you have all the vocabulary then just consume content in the target language and grammar comes naturally.
@@comradecameron3726 Bingo. Your brain figures out grammar naturally. I teach English in a country where the ENTIRE FOCUS is on learning grammar rules. Their grammar sucks!!!! I constantly tell them to improve their grammar by not attending anymore grammar classes. Find books or TV shows you can almost completely understand and keep getting plenty of input. If you can understand it, you will improve quickly.
They all ignore me. In Asian countries you are taught that THIS. IS. THE. WAY.
I really wonder what they think in their minds... "Ok, my English sucks. I've spent years and years and lots of money and it still sucks. Well, maybe if I spend more money and learn from a native speaker I'll improve?" So they then come to me and I say "hi, if you'd like to improve, try A, B and C!" and their brain says "BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT HAS ALREADY FAILED ME FOR A DECADE!! WHO IS THIS FOREIGNER TO TELL ME HOW TO LEARN HIS LANGUAGE?!?!?"
Years and years later? They haven't improved at all.
It seems like the real thinking is "I have paid money and entered this room. Why should I have to do any work? I PAID MONEY NOW MAKE ME SPEAK ENGLISH!! By the way, I don't want to SPEAK English, I prefer to sit here silently."
And here l always assumed it was the lack of needlessly compicated grammar that made English so convenient as a global language...👁👄👁

Not a really good advice considering grammar is commonly subjected to context (especially in Japan). And particularly bad advice considering learning a new language usually means learning a new grammar system wich exists independently and completely disconected from other grammar systems you may be familiar with such as the one from your mother language and I own the authority to say this as it is since english is my second language and I barely know any grammatical rules about english yet I can read and write it almost flawlessly (speaking not so good but that's besides the point). And let me tell you, portuguese grammar (my mother language) is significantly harder than english and has much more bullshit going on with its grammar (example: each noun has a gender, wich roughly means that if it exists, it must be either male or female and because of this, there are different verb conjugations, particles and sometimes rules applied, this makes no sense at all yet it's a fundamental aspect of my mother language that gets completely dropped off once I became fluent in english, and this is not all: portuguese has a long list of rules and some usually come with a shit ton of exceptions, usually making the rules meaningless, the only thing I think is bullshit about english is spelling and too many words or expressions with multiple meanings, english is too short sometimes but generally speaking it's a much better language for me to express myself and the grammar is far superior than the grammar of my mother language ). Grammar can very easily become a waste of time on the scheme of language learning, I only reccomend learning grammar you'll hear it or see it being used more than once a lifetime or if it becomes too complicated, ignore it and just learn the rest through repetition and practical usage. That's just my opinion. Peace.
@@guscfer157 I admire that you’re learning English as a second language, but I have to tell you as a native that your writing isn’t as flawless as you think. You’re using one very long sentence for your entire paragraph, making it hard to follow what you’re saying. It’s best to use shorter sentences so that people can understand what you’re saying. I hope this doesn’t come across the wrong way, especially since you’re not fluent in the language.

I think the Italian guy's insight on learning languages was really cool!
+sortitus It's unfortunately also the exact opposite of how language is usually taught. :(
+genjii931 He said grammar is the most important thing. Aren't languages taught with a focus on grammar?
+Jonét Harry Normally not. Most schools use draggy books that teach you random words, and without encouraging any thinking of your own. To make it worse, those same schools often advertise "we have only natives!" or so when they don't realize some very well-versed foreigners speak and know a given language better than most natives of it, particularly on grammar uses, and also in telling dialect from main language apart.
There is just ONE important thing that Italian guy forgot to mention, though, which is just as important: while grammar basically IS essential and of utmost importance, since it's what allows you to know what you're doing with a language instead of having memorized concepts you don't really grasp, or memorized keywords and terms, it is CRITICAL that you *_do not underestimate vocabulary._* I remember I used to think JUST like him on that regard, but then I learned and paid the price once I mastered a language's grammar, but lacked the vocabulary (since it wasn't as interesting or important for me), resulting in me not being able to use the language in a natural, native-like manner. Today I speak 3 languages fluently, but those 3 could've been 5 if it wasn't for that mistake I didn't realize earlier. (Or 8, if I pushed further with French, Hungarian and Japanese, whose basics I handle, but require tons of training.)
But in short:
Grammar = Engine (like a game's)
Vocabulary = Tools
If you have the platform/engine, but no tool you can use it with, you consequently also cannot use the engine itself. Likewise, if you have the tools, but no platform/engine, you'll have no idea of what the hell you're actually doing, either. For the latter, though, you can always become a parrot, but that's not a long-term solution.
+Jonét Harry I am learning Japanese and can carry on a basic conversation. Grammar in Japanese is crucial! Same with words.
+Jonét Harry vocabulary and grammar should be a big focus. I have been studying Japanese for almost 4 years and love it. I watch dubbed Japanese movies now such as The Time Traveler's Wife.

I visit Japan on occasion (because I have to, I'd avoid it if I could, terrible country to visit) and I don't bother with the Japanese language at all. The number of Japanese who can speak English is great enough for me to not have to learn their native language, and since I don't care about their culture, food, or society and am only in Japan for reasons of obligation, not speaking Japanese doesn't affect me at all.
@@shortanddumbmediareview4855 wat wrong with japan
Really interesting video, regards and good luck👍🙂
I loved the channel!!!! 👏
This anime didn't seem to have much of a plot. But the art style was interesting. Hyper realistic. 6/10
10/10

Awful compared to Cory in the House. 4/20

3:35 This man was a whole vibe, he's the nicest person in this video lmaoooo
I found him a bit pretentious?
Like he had to one-up the boy.
He looked like a teacher like a nice teacher
his smile makes him seem like a very kind person
You underestimate the Pakistan guy. That guy was rad
Ye lol i want him as teacher
"What kind of Japanese food do you like"
"Something we have in America too"
A man of my own heart.
Wait- I’m gonna try learning stuff again, this randomly gave me the motivation
“You can talk to that girl”

"whats your favourite japanese food?"
"i like eggs."
what the heck
lol xD maybe he meant foods like omurice or something
Yeah am sure the poor felow meant dishes that are prepared with egg as one of the ingridients... but he had a limited vocabulary to state so... :D well atleast the person with him tried to help!
Every time someone asks me what is my favorite japanese food, I answer "Tamago kakke gohan"... So I can understand xD
That guy was cringey tbh.
but, tamago ir eggs are universal :v
í think u can nos say eggs as japanese food :
i think its so interesting to see so many different people of different cultures. idk its so cool to me
Love the video will follow your channel
It's interesting there's a lot of foreigners just chilling in Japan who apparently can't understand a lick of Japanese, yet it's actually quite easy enough to hang out in Japan like that.
Kategari English is a universal language, sad to say. There’s a large Latinx population where I live so I can hold a conversation in Spanish though.
@@Surnamehere Nice, I know both English and Spanish so I should be fine
@@Surnamehere Latinx? Nobody likes that term...
Japanese is one of the most difficult languages in world. I have watched a lot of anime but still can't speak it.
They can get by but it's a really limited life if you can't speak the language here.
I am 90% sure that coloured American-Japanese guy helped me at the Tokyo station when I lost my wallet. Very kind man had a face I wouldn’t forget. Small world.
Dude, just say black. Colored is not the best word anymore.
It's fine if you called him black
@@GUITARTIME2024 なるほど!
@@GUITARTIME2024 maybe he isn't from an English speaking country bc in Germany e.g. it's polite to say "dark/coloured" and it's not to say black :)
@@queenb7209 his name is connor
Simply great :) Thank you.
For the people complaining that some of them don't know any of the language, sometimes it's not as easy as you think it might be just because you live there. Yes, you are in the country but if you don't know the language to begin with, no-one speaks to you so you can just end up not learning, plus they might be in a workplace where most people only speak English or Spanish etc.
this is legit the only actual social experiment on youtube thats entertaining to watch and not fake
Although I find the title of "social experiment" to be a bit misleading.
Realistically, this is more of a "social poll."
I feel egg guy in my soul. Eggs totally taste better in Japan.
@@yoketah I agree that they add things to their eggs to make them delicious, but I'm saying even their plain eggs are a better quality than where I'm from
Even if I've never been to Japan I agree
We eat our eggs raw here in Kyoto.
@@kyotoben9623 Yeeee, the eggs are way safer ♡
The chickens that lay eggs in Japan are treated and fed completely differently than other countries. Therefore the eggs have lots more nutrients which you notice in the yolk which is quite orange compared to yellow in the US for example. All of this also allows the eggs to be eaten raw for about two weeks after purchase. Japanese eggs taste way better and are a lot more filling as well. I've lived in Tokyo for over a year btw. Originally from Houston, Texas.
Impressive video. I love Japan and i am trying to be a polyglot in Japanese, Italian, French, German, Chinese, Portuguese and Russian since its easy for me to learn several languages at once. I'm American of hispanic descent (🇵🇷/ 🇩🇴) so I already know Spanish and English a lot course. Peace 🇺🇸 ❤ 🇯🇵.
0:53 that guy was so sweet. I literally cried. 😭😭😭😭😭😭
"She said she didn't speak japansese......in japanese" 😂😂😂😂😂
It's just like Yuta telling the Italian guy that he didn't speak Italian -- in Italian.
I spent 2 weeks travelling France and one of the only sentences I could string together was "Je ne parle pas francais" (I can't speak French) If you're just a touro it's a pretty important phrase to learn. Stops a lot of awkward situations.
erilaz7 well, I'm Italian and the way he said that is a bit awkward, still comprehensible but weird.
Nico l'ha detto perfettamente, è ovvio che ha un po' di accento ma non fare il precisino
Dipende cosa intendo tu e cosa hai capito che intendessi io, l'ha detto in modo formalmente corretto, ma in modo che un madrelingua non userebbe correntemente in una conversazione, cosa che a me capita praticamente sempre quando parlo una lingua di cui non sono un parlante nativo, tutto qui.
Yuta: What's your favorite type of Japanese foo-
Random guy: E G G
@Me Gusta uhhhhhmm... okay?
@Lostcause spammer
It’s kinda cool to be able to understand some of the stuff they are saying since I’m learning Japanese
I'll probably never go to Japan, but I think it would still be cool to learn the language. My mom went to Japan once, and she learned the language from people who were fluent in the language. I'm still learning Japanese on duolingo, but I feel like having a pen pal would also help. Just my opinion.
