#compared
#kansas and #nebraska
Two bordering states that I am VERY familiar with in these United States. Both can trace their beginnings to the Kansas-Nebraska Act. I guess you can call this whole video the Kansas Nebraska Act amirite? Ha ha!
Both have been settled by humans for thousands of years. Some were nomadic, others were sedentary. By the time Europeans got to the area in the 1500s and 1600s, prominent American Indian nations in modern-day Kansas included the Arapaho, Cheyenne, Comanche, Kansa, Kiowa, Osage, Pawnee, and Wichita. Wait, the Kansa? Yeah, Kansas is named after the Kansa Indians, for real. Prominent American Indian tribes in modern-day Nebraska included also the Cheyenne and Pawnee, but additionally the Lakota, Omaha, Otoe, and Ponca. Nebraska is named after the Otoe Indian word Nebrathka, which means “flat water,” in reference to the Platte River, which runs through the state. As you probably already guessed by now, the biggest cities in both states today, Wichita and Omaha, are both named after the Indian tribes.
Anyway, in 1541, a Spanish conquistador named Francisco Vásquez de Coronado and his expedition were the first Europeans to reach modern-day Kansas. Modern-day Nebraska wasn’t really checked out by Europeans much until the 1700s. The French claimed it. In 1714, Etienne de Bourgmont and his crew checked it out for the first time.
Both the French and Spanish did not settle modern-day Kansas, but the French did do some trading along the Missouri River, which led to a trading post in modern-day Nebraska.
The future states both completely were part of the Louisiana Purchase. Yep, the United States bought them in 1803. The next year, Lewis and Clark checked both out on their famous expedition. In 1806, Zebulon Pike’s expedition passed through Kansas and assumed the area was too dry for farming. Thanks to him and particularly a dude named Stephen Long, who checked out both modern-day Kansas and modern-day Nebraska in 1820, the western part of the Great Plains mistakenly got called the Great American Desert. Later on, when the American government was forcing American Indians off their lands back east and needed a place to relocate them, they were like, let’s send them off to the crappy land we can’t farm out in the Great American Desert?
This was the most personal Compared episode I've ever made.
So which state should I move to next? Er, I mean, which states should I compare next? And don't even bother arguing that Kansas is better than Nebraska or that Nebraska is better than Kansas. It's pretty clear that they are EXACTLY EVEN.
Oh, and don't forget to support my sponsor: Civil War: War and Peace: warandpeace.onelink.me/g1tb/56a28d73
Alaska and Hawaii
West Virginia and Virginia maybe
Caleb se7en he already did that
san Antonio and Austin Texas compared would be a nice video
Montana and Idaho, they have similar populations, similar area, are bordering and not many people know about them.
The difference is that in Kansas when your house gets sucked up by a tornado you get transported to a magical land while in Nebraska you just die.
This is true. I saw it in a documentary once.
@@iammrbeat is it the same documentary that tested the chemical reaction between witches and water?
@Samuel Sweetmann just.... just stop
I am a nebraskan. This is a fact.
@Samuel Sweetmann that's a joke in every state
I live in Nebraska. My corner of the world is so seldom talked about that it really feels special seeing videos like this.
same here, just a mention of Nebraska make me feel happy
♥️ Nebraska
Same I ❤️ Nebraska
I'm from kansas and I felt this ❤ we may be in the heartland but we are so overlooked
I feel you💯
Did you know on football day the third most populated city in Nebraska is the football stadium
Why yes I did. Even when the Huskers are having "off" years!
@@iammrbeat Which is every year for the past 20 years
As an LA local this blows my mind. When I was younger I met someone from Nebraska who first introduced me to this fact.
@@paintkiller93
Here's another little nugget: the University of Nebraska has sold out every home football game it has played since 1962.
It is the longest sellout streak in major American sports (both college and professional) by 15 years.
Sounds like Green Bay when the packers play.
Quick side note: Kool-Aid was invented in Hastings, Nebraska
Lawerence Kansas is the hometown of basketball.
Actually the person who made it in Hastings worked with someone in Cambridge on it. The person in Cambridge actually creates it, but let the other guy take the recipe and do whatever he wanted with it.
@@sirsqat9341 It started in Massachusetts but was rapidly adopted in Kansas.
Jason Kraus you have a source that provides this?
Jason Kraus I just search up “where was basketball invented” and can only find Lawerence, KS.
I was hoping for Nebraska's true enemy: Iowa, but this was a pleasant surprise
Haha yes!!!
Iowa wins btw ;)
@@isparkys9604 Wrong. To me, a Nebraskan, Iowa is a pretty good state and not an enemy of Nebraska. They had good healthcare there.
Julius Caesar true honestly at our core we’re brothers what we should really be worried about is the crazy derecho that just went through
I guess I'm an old guy. ALWAYS able to get up for the Okies. Buffs too since I have lived In Colorado since 1974. Playing Iowa is kinda fun (if disappointing for the last six years) but playing Rutgers and Maryland is just weird.
Kudos to Nebraska for planting manmade forests to help the environment!
They have Team Trees before it was even cool. Hell, even the Arbor Day Foundation cooperated with Mr Beast in the Team Trees project.
A good chunk of Halsey burned this summer.
Unfortunately they planted eastern red cedar. Junk trees that can drink a Russian sailor under the table. We are working on getting rid of them outside the forest, but I think i heard it was near 100 years at the current rate of burning to get rid of them.
They are very similar yet very different. Kansas is little more edgy while Nebraska is more chill. Kansas *practically* invented Sunflowers while Nebraska created Arbor Day. They may occasionally throw insults and jokes, but at the end of the day when a Kansa and Nebraska meet they instantly click. They just get each other like nobody else. Kansas and Nebraska go together like Czech Republic & Slovakia, or Rwanda & Burundi.
I concur;
Spent years from ~1955 to 1963 in Hutch-there is an "edginess" though have to know what to look for

The interesting thing is that a lot of people call the Great Plains states (The Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma) part of the Midwest but I have always thought of the Great Plains as its own part of the country
Sammy K. Oklahoma is the south but I get that I always felt like the dakotas Nebraska and Kansas don’t relate to the Midwest (from Illinois here)
Yeah so do u agree with me about that
Ya know that feels right, actually; it's like a unique blend of Midwest and Southwest and a unique central vibe all our own!
I live in Kansas... grew up in Minnesota... I’ve always considered it all the Midwest and so does everyone else who lives here. 🤷♀️
I always thought kansas and Nebraska
were very similar to Northern Oklahoma.
I think one of the funny parts of this is that pretty much any Kansas native watching this video probably knows where the majority of those towns are you mention
Oh 100%💀
Absolutely 100%. I was born in Overland Park, Wichita is a frequent visit, I dated a chick from Hutchinson once. Manhattan sucks, Basehor barely exists (my whole maternal side of family is from Bonner Springs), plus who from KS hasn't gotten shitty drunk in Lawrence, most likely at a house party, the dorms, or downtown Mass. Now that I think of it though, Manhattan too xD
and the moral of the story is if you live in Miami, Johnson, or Wyandotte counties, move to Jackson before you end up in jail for really petty bullshit
Yeah I live 15 mins from Wichita 😂
@@wglroyal 20 min from Manhattan 🤙🏻
That’s right!

I give you points Mr. Beat for appreciating the Sandhills. One of the most underappreciated areas in the state.

Agreed! Just bought some Sandhill plum jelly today!
Some awesome golf courses there.
Nebraska has a replica of Stonehenge made of old cars called Carhenge
Been there - just outside Alliance, NE. Also have visited TRUCHHENGE in the Topeka, KS, area as well (though Carhenge is way more interesting/fun to visit).
Kansas has the world's largest ball of twine, which I think is just as odd lol
That’s really funny

I used to live in Colorado and drove back and forth between there and my hometown of Indianapolis. It’s amazing how much the landscape changes from east to west in Kansas and Nebraska. Quite beautiful

I was going to say about how the great flu pandemic started here in Kansas… We are certainly known for a lot of really crazy weird stuff Civil War, the flu pandemic, tornadoes, various serial killers, tornadoes, protesters, unfortunately Westborough Baptist Church… The only time you heard anything good about Kansas is when it is March madness with basketball going on all over the place

Great suggestions. Thank you!
Baltimore and Philadelphia would probably make for a better comparison. Baltimore is pretty different from D.C. despite it being closer.
Thanks for showing Wichita. We often feel like the neglected poor relations compared to the Johnson/Douglas/Shawnee triumvirate.
Wichita is neglected?! 😆😆😆
The 103 counties not named Johnson or Sedgwick are all laughing at that!!!
So true! I live by Wichita (Andover) but most family lives in Humbolt and Chanute. Fun to hear him through the whole video and then discover we probably have run into each other at some point! Great video!

I got to go to Lawrence one year and watch a KU football game. They were beating Texas A&M the whole game and lost in the last two minutes. It was still fun.
The trucking company I work for now is based in Lincoln. A previous company I worked for was based in Omaha.

The western most parts of kansas are actually pretty interesting because they rise in elevation by a couple thousand feet due to being so close to colorado. The high plains are very hilly
@@blank-hv8xt The Flint Hills in spring with thunderstorms rolling across them is pretty impressive and the blizzards west of them are epic. The flocks of migrating birds darkening the sky in the fall is impressive. The land is simply a blank canvas to make the experience more dramatic.

Good video!!! As a BUCKEYE living in Kansas for the past 25+ years due to military stuff, LOVE both Kansas & Nebraska. Been all over both states and seen things that many native Kansans/Nebraskans NEVER seen or heard off. Just love exploring each state. Have traveled both the Santa Fe & Oregon/California/Mormon Trails, as well as, the Pony Express & Lewis & Clark Trails. Some awesome UNEXPECTED lands features in both states the further west you travel - again, not many natives of each state really know/care about.

North Carolina and Virginia compared is a good one
As a North Carolinian I felt North Carolina was more similar to Virginia than to South Carolina (Tobacco, Population, Land area, Swing state).

Great video! I'm a Kansan as well and have lived in or around Lawrence my whole life. I actually helped with the cleanup in Greensburg after the tornado and it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. It's incredible seeing how well the town is doing now after how absolutely devastated it was. Most of the town was simply rubble and there wasn't a tree left standing that wasn't a broken twisted mess.
Thank you! Yeah, I was living in Nebraska when that tornado hit. My dad went to help with the cleanup, though. It still just amazes me not only how devastating it was, but how the town recovered so well. Oh, and hey neighbor!
Lawrence Kansas is honestly such a great place.
I would love to visit Kansas or Nebraska one day. Any state that was the birthplace of Pizza Hut is a state I like! Plus, a lot of my friends are Nebraska fans in football, and I know someone who played for them, so I feel like I should take the pilgrimage.

I was born in Topeka and currently live in a suburb of Topeka (less than a mile away from Topeka in fact). As a native Texan, I have to remain neutral on the Kansas and Nebraska comparison. I have some relatives who live in both states. I travel throughout the entire U.S., mostly over the road. (No, I am not a truck driver.) It is not unusual for me to crisscross the country. Both the West and East Coasts are heavily populated and congested. It's a pleasure driving through KS (I-70) and NE (I-80), where it's not congested and a whole lot of wide, open spaces. I give both Kansas and Nebraska a thumbs up. Now, that should make my relatives happy with me.
They're basically like Texas, without the desert, mild winters, palm trees, and Gulf Coast.
Ohio and Pennsylvania, or Ohio and Michigan should be your next compared states.
@Brandon C. The crazy thing is, I currently live in Texas & I don't like living there, I actually wanna move to Ohio, I've got family members who live in the real nice suburbs of Cleveland. I can't stand living in the sun belt, it's just way too hot in the summer & I'm just not in to the whole Texas thing even though everybody loves it there. I don't mind snow & I enjoy getting to do winter activities & I wanna go somewhere where it's not 90+ degrees for 4 straight months. So call me crazy, but I wanna get out of the sun belt & wanna move to the rest belt (Although I don't like to call it that).
This popped up for me, not sure why probably because I live in Kansas. I remember reading about the Kansas and Nebraska act in middle school, it’s pretty interesting. Thanks for the refresher
I live about 1 hour from Greensburg. I didn't move here till 2 years ago, but I have been by there plenty of times. They have a building surrounding the worlds deepest hand-dug well, which also commemerates when the town got hit by the Tornado. Pretty cool place!
It's such a cool spot, and it's cheap! If you can work from home, Greensburg is a nice place to live.
Another great state comparison from my favorite Midwestern UA-camr! One minor thing though; it would’ve been nice to mention the breeding grounds of the Sandhills Crane.
Stephen Douglas has entered the chat.
Sorry Stephen, you done messed up with that one.
Jeeeeeeewwwww
I really appreciate you making a video about my great home state, Nebraska. It's the land that I love and yes, Husker football fans would literally die for their team. Also I'm sorry to hear you lived in Omaha. (Only complaint I have is that the Hallam tornado was not mentioned as it was at one time the largest recorded tornado in the world and wiped out basically the entire town of Hallam)
I used to live in Fort Leavenworth KS and I fell so special seeing this video.

Well thank you so much Vijay!
As a homeschool mom in Kansas looking for State history resources, thank you for these videos.
Damn this makes me wanna visit my family in Nebraska! Maybe next do Michigan and Minnesota? As a michigander i know its highly contested who has more lakes. On top of that we're both connected in the Upper peninsula so we're always exploring each others states. Lots of cool nature, history and culture too. Would love to see your take on my home state!
I’d rather be in the land of Oz than Kansas
Oz is no place like home
But Kansas is great we have like a lot of wheat and wind power, heck we even have a whole THREE places that qualify as cities.
Bhaaa I am from Indiana and I feel sorry for Kansas residents
@@btrull6018 you shouldn't.

Oh that Omaha influence is big.
TD Ameritrade is a thing too
Thank you very much for this informative video on the great states of Kansas and Nebraska, Mr. Beat! Me and my family are actually planning on relocating from Washington State to Nebraska. We've found a house in Lincoln, that we really like. :-)
Lincoln is a great place to live in. I lived there the last 20 years of my lifelong residency in Nebraska before relocating to Portland, OR. I still come here twice a year to see my family. I love the wide open spaces and beautiful sunsets!
@@sallykirby4907 Thank you very much for your reply, ma'am! 🙂Me and my wife are still looking for houses there.
I think I saw the aftermath of what you're talking about at 11:51 in person. In 2007 me and my family moved from North Carolina to Oregon, and we opted to roadtrip it instead of fly. I remember being woken up in the night and being told that we were in Kansas, and seeing apocalyptic remains of buildings. Unless it was actually something else like a fire, or there was another tornado disaster on that scale in Kansas in 2007, I'm pretty sure I saw the aftermath of the Greensburg tornado.
Long Live Nebraska and Kansas, brothers and sisters of the Heartland!
13:40 I'm still freaking out how you found my school mr beat 😭

Having grown up in Kansas, I loved this video.
My suggestion is a comparison between Illinois and Wisconsin, if you haven't already done it.
Loved this video! Im a KU student myself, so when I saw your Jayhawk I was pumped!! Rock Chalk!
