    Judy Holliday had the amazing ability to play the comical, ditzy blonde while at the same time giving a genuinely good dramatic performance. Not an easy thing to pull off. And notice that the first three minutes of this scene are all done in one, single take. Amazing.

    Broderick Crawford makes this scene work. His reaction shots and his one line, "Do you mind" is the best punchline of a 50s movie. Shame the Judy Holiday and he didn't do another movie together. Another great movie for Judy is "Solid Gold Cadillac." She and Paul Douglas are great together. She does well with big burly men.

    I crack up every single time. She was brilliant in this. Her Oscar was so well deserved. And the best part of this film was how her character ended up in the end. She was smart already but only got smarter (she said she was dumb but I wasn't convinced). I love it when ignorant bums who treat women like he did her end up getting kicked to the proverbial curb...and end up with the good guy.

      I saw this movie as a 10 yearly and fell in love with Judy. I was so upset to learn that she died so young. She would have been a legend the likes of Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett. In my view though she IS a legend. A wonderful talent and a sweet person. This scene is one of the finest comedic performances in film history.

    Always a great scene.Ms. Holliday was up against heavyweight actresses for best Oscar, including Bette Davis, Ann Baxter (All about Eve), and Gloria Swanson (Sunset Blvd.) and
    Eleanor Parker. She won.

    • @Anaxiphile
      @Anaxiphile 2 роки тому

      Eleanor Parker was up for Caged, a woman’s prison movie, in which she played her patented, noble sufferer. I always felt that her performance was eclipsed by Hope Emerson’s supporting performance as a guard. Emerson was known as the largest star in Hollywood, if not the biggest. She had at least one other connection with Judy Holliday; she was also memorable in Adam’s Rib.

    I have never thought it fair that an actress get an Academy Award for a role she played a 1,000 times before live audiences which enables her to perfect every nuance for humor and feeling. Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke as well got Oscars for roles they perfected on stage many hundreds of performances. I DO love all of them but they already got Tony awards for doing these on stage.

      How is it fair if the awards are not given on merit??? No matter how many times an actor practiced the role before, the merit of the performance matters… Someone may have practiced a role 1000 times and still be bad… And nobody stopped others to practice new roles before the film shoot begins…
