Every job saved from protectionism is liable to cost between 2 and 8 times as much (2-3 being the average, 8 being something like the USSR or EU). And I'm using cost not as a synonym for price, but in reference to total economic opportunity; saving one job from protectionist policies is almost certain to result in two (or more) jobs being lost or multiple other jobs being reduced by the same total output.
Barriers only enable the government to project authority over others. If companies can't create affordable and plentiful products, then either they should get replaced by competition(domestic/foreign) or the government is oppressive to businesses.

Barriers only enable the government to project authority over others. If companies can't create affordable and plentiful products, then either they should get replaced by competition(domestic/foreign) or the government is oppressive to businesses.
Only if your toy model assumes that capitol investment and labor are perfectly fungible, and ignores all the other fun things like say transport cost. I expect most people have chosen to believe their lying eyes on this one.
@@user-uv1tr9tj5w If things like transport cost increase the end user price to an extent that it wipes out any benefit from selling internationally, then there would be no impetuous for protectionist policies; the necessary high cost of foreign goods would drive people away from them. This is not what we see; areas which are more friendly to their natural market price produce goods the most efficiently at a given quality. Transport cost is, effectively, a barrier to trade; the ability to transport large quantities of goods cheaply has always resulted in superior trade.
Comparative advantage does not assume that capital and labor are fungible. In point of fact, the entire reason it works is because those are not fungible between countries; if they were, then comparative advantage would simply not be a thing. If capital and labor were perfectly fungible, then the country which had the most of those would never need to import because it could produce everything internally, and thus save on transport costs and the hassle of dealing with foreign trade. Every country which has tried autarky has seen prices rise and wages, quality of goods, and the standard of living all drop.
