Line level is for taking an amplified signal from another electronic device like a mixing console or something with pre-amps in it.
I do a lot of events and we will have the A2 give us house sound from the mixer, usually an aux out.
If you take a feed like that and your set for mic level audio, you will have a miss match and your audio will be over modulated (distorted). Set it for line level and it can handle this amplified audio and sound normal.

i assume it should be set to mic level if i connect a Rode Go ii receiver by using a 3.5 to dual xlr splitter from the receiver inputting to both the xlr s ?

@@rajramachandran8877 I used a Rode Go II just recently, but I can’t remember what I had it set for. You’re assumption is probably correct. I don’t believe the Rode RX has a pre-amp in it.
Best way is try both settings. If you’re getting good, clean levels when you’re set to Mic level, then you’re good. If your signal is too hot or distorting at mic level, switch to line level. Or if your levels are extremely low or non existent when set at line level, switch it to mic level.

I love all your tutorials. Always straight to the point, concise and extremely informative. Thank god no annoying loud background music. Nicely turned down so can clearly hear you and louder only in approproiate places. You have good taste. Seems like the set up is easy but often overlooked. I picked up great ideas from you that we weren’t doing. The most important one is actually your point about formatting the cards in advance. Might appear as a simple thing but if you don’t do it in advance then you run out of room. So you would basically waste all that space on the card. Maybe a small point but can mess up your production. Thank you very much. You rock!

When you do custom white balancing A and B, you are nulling out the tint on all three photodiodes on the sensor Red/Green/Blue but when you do Preset (manual) white balance you are only nulling out the red and blue tint. That is why if you look closely, you will always see a slight green tint in Preset White Balance vs A & B white balance. On the FX6 don't listen to the people saying fill the frame 60% - if you want to get the best white balance fill the frame all the way and expose the white card correctly using the main light source. (use clear image zoom to get in all the way on the white card).

Audio in line dont need to be amplified. But for mic, they need to be amplified by 60db cus the signal is too low (i could be wrong in the number), so +60db with or without phatom power

  • @hollandparkmedia

The line feature is used when your sound input isn't from a mic but from e.g. a mixer. Microphones often need to be gained to come to line level. So think of it this way, a mic needs to be gained to become line and that's why you have expensive audio gear in order to e.g. give a clean gain. Think of audio gain the same as ISO or gain on cameras, if you pull it up too high, you're also raising the noise level too. But in audio.
What's important to note is that if your input is from a mixer or something else that gives you line level, it's essential that you set the camera to line. Because when you're on mic, the camera will try to gain it. But if you gain a line level audio, you just clip the signal and push the port past its rated threshold aka you blow the port.
So if you have mic, stick to mic unless it's a condenser that needs phantom, so then mic +48V. But if your sound input is line, then stick to line so you don't send your port to heaven. If you have a mic plugged in and set your camera to line, it just won't work cause you don't have the gain. Hope it all makes sense.

Cool tips. Looking at jumpin into the FX6 in a few days time...Got an FS5 now and it has same mic input settings. Line is for taking a feed from a mixer or something that already has a preamp, so if you're recording a DJ and you want the feed directly from the DJ's mixer into your camera aswell as a mic to get some ambient sounds (crowd etc) then this is perfect to use both.

Your audio explanation is incorrect. +48v is for condenser microphones, but you wouldn't want to send +48v to a dynamic microphone (such as a handheld SM58) both of these devices output mic level signals, so they need to be in mic sensitivity rather than line level sensitivity. You want line level sensitivity for line level sources such as when you are connected to a mixing board at a wedding, or if you are connected to a recorder that outputs at line level. Oftentimes times wireless microphone receivers will output line level to your camera as well.

In thumbnail mode - hit Menu and hold it in to go to the main menu and then scroll down to Thumbnail - which will now be highlighted (if your not in Thumbnail mode this will be grayed out). There you can delete the individual clips - although this is generally not the suggested way to do this because you can accidently delete other clips if your not careful. The more accepted way is to just dump the footage to a drive and delete it from the drive. Randy
