I stumbled onto one for MSRP back in November (and then bought another one the next day!), and saved it for NYE. WOW! Such great flavors - I get a little bit of the nuttiness, but A LOT of caramel / kettle corn on the nose; sooooooo sweet on the palate, with honey and lighter fruit; and a decently long finish and good mouth-coating oiliness. I already love Still Austin, but this really takes it to the next level.
I’m glad I got a backup at the release (and a Nancy’s Rye Pick for December and a couple of batch two Blue Corns). It honestly can’t be much older than five years given the age of their first base distillate….which is nuts.
I mean, for me, as long as there is no artificial flavoring added then I don’t care how a whiskey originates. I just care about what’s in the bottle. Still Austin may have cracked the code on making a strong profit and a quick turnaround on their products by aging them in Texas and playing with water as the variable. They are able to produce 3 year old whiskey that tastes like it’s 10+ year old Kentucky distillate, and they can charge about the same price as the 10 year Kentucky stuff. And I’m not complaining as the consumer because it’s just damn good. Win win for everyone.
Overall, Still Austin Tanager is a top five overall whiskey of 2024 for me and competes for #1. Already bought two backups. So complex, a mind blowing 5 year old bourbon.
Preface: I love this expression, love what SA is doing and I did indeed buy and back it up recently. But c'mon man, good value? Even in that Texas heat 5-7 year juice proofed down to 106 for $150? You said 8-14 year Booker's Reserves was even value @ $129 lol
Value isnt just price. Its whats in the bottle. If you just go by age then yeah...Its not as good of a value....age isnt everything and a TX vs KY age is very different. But I like this more than Booker's reserves. But Bookers may be this in a blind just on proof alone.
@@TheMashandDrum I agree its not just price. But price is a substantial component in the tapestry of value. Take those original Hard Truth Ryes for example. Only 2 years old but I loved them, flavor bombs. I enjoyed the juice in the bottle but by no objective measure is a 2-year rye @ $70 a solid value; It just isn't. 2 things can be true at the same time. Cheers!
Hey where do you usually buy your whiskies? Like online or a specific store, or are they usually samples/gifts? I just wanna know good places to buy decent and or better offerings. Thanks for the review!
It’s about who knows you. The top whiskeytube channels get new products sent to them from distillery reps, marketing, owners or someone in that chain. Through Patreon and discord subscribers are more ways. And probably from stores they have built relationships with. I’d bet Jason got this sent to him by Sill Austin’s marketing department, because he’s a well known channel. All just my shitty opinion 🥃
I was fortunate enough to score a bottle of this a week ago. Can't wait to crack it and especially after your review. I love the Joseph Magnus Cigar Blends, Starlight, Short Barrel, etc., so really looking forward to a different dynamic in a cigar blend
Good look finding it! It has become a unicorn and is gong for 500 on secondary. A buddy of mine got a hold of just one and he lives 10min away from Still Austin.
Man, how much is Still Austin paying these UA-camrs to hawk the Tanager? No one ever heard of it 1 month ago and suddenly it's everyone's whiskey of the year. Would love to know the payola amount.
I thought that too at first but in TX, but Nancy has said in the past that aging in Austin tends to speed up the maturation process due to the heat -- they are working on ways to slow down the maturation process so they can do longer age stated barrels, so a 5 year whiskey in TX would taste way different than a 5 year whiskey in KY, i guess?
This was way too light for me. I got for retail and traded it for a bottle of hard truth. This is $50 whiskey at best wrapped up in $100 worth of packaging
Jason and to anyone else here. I want to wish happy healthy prospers peaceful New Year. Cheers ladies and gentlemen
you too!
Scored one this weekend! Your review is spot on. This thing is a hitter!
That is pretty awesome presentation!!! Would love to have a bottle of that. Still Austin rocks!!!
I’m 100% with you! This bottle is so unique and so crushable that having just one is not enough!

Glad you got one!!! Been hoping to see your review
Great review, Jason! I was able to score finding it last week. Cracking it tomorrow, New Year’s Eve. Can’t wait!
Awesome review! I don’t think I’ll find one but if I do, I’d definitely buy.
I was lucky enough to not only get 1 of these but 2. I think its an incredible bourbon. Happy New Year and looking forward to future videos.

Happy and healthy New Year to all!!!
Great review! Will definitely be chasing this one in 2025.
Happy new year everyone! 🎉
The Tanager took my number 2 spot for bourbon of the year.
what was your #1?
Hoping to find it in DFW. Remember, 5 years in Texas is like 10 years in Kentucky.
Excellent job dissecting this one! Definitely a special bottle. Cheers to one helluva year Jason!
I was fortunate to get a bottle a couple weeks ago. One of my top whiskies of the year. Will take Still Austin over Garrison any day!
I would love to have this one, but we don’t get Still Austin in my area. Great review though.
Just picked one up today!
The Petite liquid will continue to age and should make this blend more complex every year.

Clearly, we are living in The Golden Age of Whiskey.
Still Austin hit it out of the park with this, especially keeping it under $200.
Great review, Jason🔥! I’m still looking to land a bottle🥃🥃 Cheers and Happy New Year🎉🥃😊
I haven't seen a bad review on this bottle yet. Too bad most of us will never see it... especially in Virginia 😢
Sounds great. We get everything from SA locally but haven’t seen this yet in my state.
Texas Whiskey Cheers 😎
Cheers to 2025 and getting those 100,000 subscribers 🥃
This is going to be your year.
Came to phx on Xmas eve. Really complex. Only downside is that it’s slightly drying on the palate but still great.
@@azgolfandbourbon yeah it's a bit of a low proof but it's got flavor
Where would one get one of those tasting glasses? Really like the tulip shape.
@@danielwhitmire34 it's called an Eisch glass. They are available online.
Friend managed to get one, hope i get to try it. Still austin is so good.
Thanks for fueling my regrets of passing on this!

Love the channel, still waiting for ID to bring Still Austin in. 🤔
In Italia non si trova 😢

130 to 150 in St Louis
I also regret not buying a backup It is fantastic
Secondary seems to be between 250-400.
Happy New Year Jason, all the best to and your family! Except for the Mets, I hope they choke with Mr Soto, lol. All the best, cheers

If it was sent by still austin he would say so, and hes stated in the past hes had to go to secondary for reviews.@@b1gsteve251
Great job
Thanks!
Where are you all finding this?!?!?! Everybody in the comments are saying "I got mine". It's non existent in Ohio.
Big fan of Still Austin. Glad I got 2 at Total Wine. One for me and a drinking buddy
I dig this review, but I know I'm never gonna even SEE this bad boy, nevermind have the chance to buy one.

They are 250 all day on secondary if you know where to look!
False 😂
@@bengeorge935 I bought one for $225 today...where are y'all buying??
These aren't selling that well, even in TX. Saw plenty of TW stores carry them, and sit on shelves
It doesnt say buffalo trace on the front, give it time.
5 yo not finished in anything, meh at best
@@johnmorgan233 reviews have definitely not said that its meh

Sorry, a 5yr. Bourbon for $150 is out of my wheelhouse!
