There is a SpongeBob costume in the live-action segment wherein the episode Big Birthday Blowout, we see the actor who voiced SpongeBob playing his human counterpart in the Krusty Slab diner.
I HIGHLY recommend the SpongeBob musical, it’s seriously brilliant. Brief summary is that a volcano is about to destroy the city and Plankton turns the citizens against Sandy as she’s an immigrant and a scientist. It’s fun but also a rather brilliant commentary on racism, xenophobia and anti-science, and why coming together as a community in times of crisis is important. It’s not just a basic theme park kids show, the majority of the fan base are adults. Also the songs are SO GOOD.
For a show based on a nickelodeon cartoon about a sponge who lives in a fruit on the seabed you wouldn't expect so much of the messages to strick close to home in our world right now.but it's so brilliantly done and staged and it's a phonomenal production
I really hope that we get an animated adaptation of the musical eventually, sort of similar to how the two Peanuts stage productions were adapted as animated specials. It’s been confirmed that three Paramount Plus movies are in development and a new theatrical film, I really would like to see one of them be simply the musical but as a movie. I think it would be so amazing to see all those songs performed by the series voice cast and all those big numbers in animated form with a big, theatrical budget.
It’s not on Broadway anymore. The theater closed. It’s a shame because it’s the best live theater show I’ve ever seen. It’s so creative and just masterful
The Sponge Bob Broadway musical is really incredible. I was blown away with how much care and love was put into the show by its creators and cast. It’s fun with genuinely good music. It catches you off guard with just how invested in the story you’ll become. I implore every musical fan to watch it even if you don’t like Sponge Bob.
The spongebob musical is one of my favorite shows on broadway,I just love the costumes set and everything about it,so seeing it talked about here makes me so happy!!
You know what's kinda disappointing about the character costume evolutions of more recent characters? How refined they are right from the get go. Don't get me wrong they're beautiful, but the horrifying first attempts at costumed character design are just so fascinating to me. I wanna see *1950s Ice-Capades Spongebob* with weird horrifying cutouts and a frumpy misshapen body. Also didn't expect Dan to laugh about the geography of my home continent today, but here we are.
1950's Ice Capades Spongebob? That would probably involve an even more humanoid design than the 2000's live show, plus a nose job, face paint, plaid pants, and a different color than yellow.
YES! A character I’ve been waiting for you to do a video on since you’ve started branching out of only Disney characters!!! Can you do Scooby Doo next?
I remember my dad getting a pic with spongebob in the early 2000s at universal! He still has it in his office, and is a huge spongebob fan like all my family is!
These intros are getting more and more creative and memorable by the day! Edit: you should consider doing costume evolution of all the other SpongeBob characters in one vid.
Saw the SpongeBob Musical twice on broadway! Ethan Slater (SpongeBob) even signed my Ukulele. Such an amazing talented and kind cast, I wish it was still going!
I remember watching the Sponge who could fly episode and later on I would keep seeing the commercial for the musical adaptation. I never saw it myself but it sure looks wild.
Dan, is there anything that DOESN'T make you lose yourself in giggles? xD honestly, I'd watch a blooper reel just to see how long it takes for you to get over a giggle fit. it's very contagious!
1. Dan's love for CNC reminds me of my brother's love for, well... CNC 2. David Zinn designed both the costumes and sets for the Broadway musical and was nominated for a Tony in both categories (He only won for the scenic designs) 3. The musical is now available for licensing so there's A LOT more costumes you can check just in the amateur productions
Buying the Broadway musical on DVD was the best decision I ever made (even though I’d also downloaded it off UA-cam, I wanted to legitimately have it). It is so cute and those completely disparate songs have no right working together as well as they do.
Spongebob has been a HUGE part of my life! I took a bday trip to NY because the musical was closing. I might have a bit of a crush on the actor who played Spongebob. I'm glad they didn't go the route that that first live show went. Those costumes will haunt my nightmares.
I’m a former friend of SpongeBob at Nickelodeon Universe! Even the “skinny SpongeBob” costume has had an update or two, the eyes and eyelashes have changed dimensions a tiny bit and he looks a little less freaked out lol. We had a ton of costume overlays for him, a couple extra ones I didn’t see mentioned here was SpongeBob’s football outfit (he wore this whenever the Big Game in February was on) and SpongeBunny (bunny ears for Easter!). I feel like there were a lot more than that but I can’t remember! But wanted to share that! :)
Also was a friend of Patrick & Squidward (I was a rare height that barely worked for all three of them) as well as two of the ninja turtles & also Aang!
Imagine if they converted The Sponge Who Could Fly show into something like KiteTails, preferably without the excessive deflations. You could have a Spongebob kite flying around flanked by a swarm of jellyfish.
Something to know about the Spongebob Broadway musical: they got EVERYONE to write songs for this show. Panic! at the Disco, They Might Be Giants, Aerosmith, Jonathan Coulton, Cyndi Lauper, The Plain White T's, TI, and John Legend all helped write original music, and they even adapted a David Bowie song!
5:20 Minor correction for ya: Maskot, based in Turkey, is different from The Mascot Company, based in the US. (Yes, there is a mascot company actually called "The Mascot Company". They're all so creative with their names)
I live about an hour away from KI (Kings Island) and I loved the Nick characters when I was a kid! I loved the Hanna Barbara characters who were there before but the Nick characters were amazing to me! I remember this well.
My Spongebob Story: One time, visiting Universal Orlando, I was at the Spongebob meet & greet in the Nicktoons attraction (back when he had the articulated arms that you mentioned). Spongebob noticed my Disney ball cap and "expressed his disapproval" in his own inimitable fashion. When I had explained that it was the only ball cap I had brought with me on my trip, the character leaves his designated spot to show all the other hats available at the gift shop. Basically, Spongebob Squarepants tried to sell me a souvenir.
I have a soft spot for the first karate-chopping thick SpongeBob, I saw him at King's Dominion when I was 8 and thought he was super appealing and authentic, lanky arms and all XD
Seeing spongebob dressed up as the Frankenstein Monster (Genius design)! Would love to see an Evolution of the Frankenstein monster at Universal studios :)
Funny thing is, for the "Sponge Who Could Fly" show, a friend of mine who worked on the show actually showed me some concept art of the costumes from the live show. I still have them, luckily.
I think the only time I’ve ever seen the OG early 2000’s Spongebob was in a cutaway gag from an actual episode. As well as a news report of a video of the mascot falling over I think
The karate-chop SpongeBob also briefly appeared in the episode where he wanted to be a lifeguard. It’s probably one of the most jarring instances of the show suddenly switching to live-action imo
Hello from Karate Chop Action SpongeBob! Yes, I'm SB SP's "special friend" in that video, delighted to be included. Small note: China's Maskox makes amazing replicas of the costume, but the original was made by a California company whose name is escaping me right now, but makes a lot of the costumes for Universal. They were hand-carved foam.
The jimmy neutron costumes are pretty interesting. There's a few variations of the head and a version where he has the pants from the show, but clearly still has the brown shoes from the movie design.
As a kings island pass holder, I miss when our kiddie land was Nickelodeon. As much as I love the Peanuts, SpongeBob and other nick shows were my childhood!!!
I remember when I was a kid, there was a SpongeBob show at Paramount's Great America and it had a SpongeBob costume that had an articulated mouth. I vaguely remember the show but all I remember was that there was also a puppet of Plankton and they sang the F.U.N. Song
The Costume history I want to see the most is the History of Bugs Bunny! Please do Bugs Bunny someday! The SpongeBob story was a lot of fun! Thank you! Love Dan’s wild laughter too!
We definitely need more SpongeBob costumes. Sandy, Squidward, Patrick, Mr. Crabs, and any Gary. I love that snail. Gary should be an animatronic I can meet and pet. That snail is awesome.
Watching this late at night while I'm sick and after I took nyquil is something XD (and this is not the weirdest episode topic by far) I love that you included the broadway musical. Ethan Slater and the rest of the cast were so good 😭
Haven’t met him in the parks yet BUT! I have met the original actors who were in the SpongeBob broadway production in NYC (genuine, kind and wholesome people must say) but I’ve taken private acting through don’t classes with the actors before on zoom and a few months back, I was in an off broadway production of SpongeBob as Mrs Puff so it was really fun! 🤩
I’ve had the opportunity to meet SpongeBob a number of times before and I’m not complaining. The show defined my childhood and I’m still watching those episodes even today. Also the Broadway show you mentioned is *severely* underrated. The songs are just…*chef’s kiss* But yeah the first several times I’ve met him were at Kings Island, the Nick hotel, and Universal. He still had his “karate chop action” arms(or is it “Kah-Rah-Tae”?) back then which was fine. I was young so I still thought he used something to breathe above the water. Since then, I’ve met him with the articulated costume. The way those team members are performing capture his energy brilliantly and he’s always so fun to meet.
two of my favourite things are disney & spongebob and to see my favourite youtuber now talk about both made my day :))) I was telling my friends/family how excited I was for this vid and u didn't disappoint, amazing evolution as usual! 🥰
I think my favorite SpongeBob is the musical version - the costume itself is beautifully done, but the actor really sells the character. I haven't seen the musical so I don't know who he is, but he's adorable.

If you think SpongeBob is hard to adapt to a mascot costume, just remember that before he came out Nickelodeon wanted to push CatDog as their next big show. If they ended up being the faces of Nickelodeon for 20+ years, I would pity costume designers worldwide - and merchandise designers in general really.
I had absolutely no idea a Spongebob musical existed before the one on Broadway, and I’m fascinated by how bonkers that costume evolution alone was. Can we get a deep dive on the SpongeBob musicals????? I need to know more!
The musical was recorded professionally and is available on Amazon and Paramount+. There’s also bootlegs on UA-cam, and the channel Wait In The Wings did a great video about its development
I got a photo with SpongeBob when I visited King's Island when I was 7 or 8 at Kings Islands back in like 2001 or 2002. Fast forward to 2021 and I visited Universal Studios when it was virtually empty and saw SpongeBob and Patrick hanging out at a socially distanced photo booth. So 20 years later I could not pass the opportunity and got a photo with the big Cheese himself once again. And it was awesome! I got a picture with SpongeBob 20 years between and captured the evolution of costumes.
13:44 I think that jacket might be calling back to an episode (which I can't remember) where our Sponge hero was once very rich and wore a robe similar to that! (Bc in any other situation, those blue n white stripped/poka-dotted pjs that you showed a few seconds ago would be his more cannon sleepwear)
Really nice video! 💛😄 I actually liked the first version of Spongebob the most, he looked most accurate. But of course, it's good they updated him so his arms could be more safely moving around and so It's easier to hug him. 🙂
When I was maybe 5 I went to a local theme park called Great America. Around that time they worked with Nickelodeon for their childrens section (it later shifted to a Peanuts section) and they had various characters from Wild Thornberries, Fairly Oddparents, etc, and of course they Spongbob. He was the one I had to meet. Whoever was in that costume (one of the ones made by Maskot) would do this thing where he would spin the arms rapidly. The arms keep in mind are hard plastic and they have limited visibility. All this to say that when I was 5 years old Spongebob smacked me in the face while trying to do one of his arm spinning bits.

Really nice video! 💛😄 I actually liked the first version of Spongebob the most, he looked most accurate. But of course, it's good they updated him so his arms could be more safely moving around and so It's easier to hug him. 🙂
YES THERE ARE 3 SPONGEBOB BALLOONS IN THE THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE!
This brings back bad memories, when I was little I have a picture with SpongeBob and there was bubbles. I was screaming and crying
I’m getting more and more convinced that in these videos Dan is losing his mind more and more!! But fr great video Dan, your videos always me laugh
I was 6 years old in 2001 and I met the King's Island SpongeBob. I was absolutely terrified, but I took a picture with him! :D
7:46 This reminds me on SpongeKnob Squarenuts
I love SpongeBob SquarePants I’m actually huge fan of him since childhood and I’m a teenager and still watch his episodes love him very much.♥️
When I was maybe 5 I went to a local theme park called Great America.
6:52 that laugh...
