This is the BEST I've seen in showing, with clarity, which notes you are playing by using a single finger. This is far better than using your full grip and indicating the notes with tablature graphics. Using this method, there's no doubt which note you are playing. Using all fingers in the grip as if you're just playing slowly often obscures the actual notes being sounded. This is great! I mean, if you want to see the grip, just refer back to the performance at the beginning. Thank you for the most clarity I've ever seen in a guitar lesson.
So, the Surfaris originally released this in 1963 and although color television had been invented it did not become available to the average Joe until after 1965. I guess you filmed this video in B&W...to keep it looking retro. Great job! and like some others have said, you are a great teacher and I have learned a lot from you.
GREAT LESSON , I KNEW THE RIFF BUT THANKS TO BRUCE IAM TAKING THE LEAD TO MY KIDS TALENT SHOW WITH MY 7 YR OLD ON DRUMS WE WILL HAVE THEM DANCING TX AGAIN TO YOU BRUCE
I appreciate you posting this. I've been trying to learn it, and I discovered that I've been practicing playing this song incorrectly. You've made this song much easier to learn. 👍 Btw ,I learned how to play Link Wray's "Rawhide" from this channel. Thanks again!
He's playing it in C and I believe the original single was in C. But all subsequent versions, recorded and live, were in B. In an interview they said it was written in B.
Wow cool - finally a tutorial that's to point. Thanks a lot. Yeah the less is the more. Less talking gives space to show things as well as time for you to learn it.
love your lessons Bruce sometimes I wish you would explain more but I can see why you do your lessons this way because it makes you listen to the notes more, your a great player and I really like your songs you do nice one mate cheers shane
I've uploaded my version to my channel. In the future I hope do it better, perhaps sometime, like you. Thanks one more time: ua-cam.com/video/_Q5LbKEKW3A/v-deo.html
Bruce...you keep your instruments in really nice shape. You are also the Best Dressed instructor. However, us beginners could use a bit (lots) more detail. Especially with the solo. thx
I really enjoyed that. Great playing, and lesson. I'm a beginner, so it might take me some time, but I really want to be able to play this song. Just wondering what amp do you use, plus what settings have you got in order to get that sound?
what overdrive/distortion are you using for the powechord section . Have been trying to find a good overdrive for surf tones that doesn't muddy up the sound in that sounds great
If only I could find tabs starting and playing where he is playing. The tabs I did find start near the nut and do not sound the same. Plus it he goes a bit too fast for me and his fingers hide what note he plays. Guess I am too old.
here you go mr terry imgur.com/Xaust7u. I'd recommend learning the notes on the guitar because this is an octave higher from the tabs you've been finding. As an example fret 3 on the 6th string (the thickest) is the same note as fret 10 on the 5th string but an octave higher.
This is a great lesson - except it's wrong! The Surfaris who originally played the song play it in B major! Shift this whole lesson down one fret to the 7th fret and you'll be able to play along to the original track by the Surfaris. Check out some of the live videos on youtube of the Surfaris to see just how the band play it. This version you're hearing here is how The Venture's covered the song and played it in C. Peace :)
What a great cover of a timeless classic. Who doesn't recognize this famous riff. Thanks for posting this one lesson.
You're welcome
You are a Great guitarist Bruce and a Great teacher!! I have learned a lot from you. I like it because you play things like the recording.

I might be doing a lesson with tabs on this.
