What pisses me off is the fact that I never had depression, I had a little bit of anxiety from the pressures of college and I was put on Zoloft. The doctor said it helps with anxiety. Well that was the beginning of a miserable 15 year journey of being on and off antidepressants and benzos, being mean, ruining relationships. You name it I did it on that medicine. I'm off everything now and have been for 11 weeks. Little bit of benzo withdrawal left but nothing serious. I've had it. The drug companies and pill pushing family doctors along with the psychiatrists need to be held accountable.

    • @foxinthesnow1917
      @foxinthesnow1917 2 роки тому +7

Because many, many double blind placebo trials have shown anti depressant meds to be effective for depression. But no one in the psychiatric field has thought that low serotonin levels are the problem for at least a decade now. That's just a simplistic answer to how these meds work that they sometimes give. That doesn't mean these drugs don't work by some other mechanism. They likely increase neuroplasticity temporarily.

Then he said SSRIs have been effective in reducing symptoms of depression, but now they know it's probably not from enhancement of serotonin, which is exactly the question needed to be answered. I guess one could summarize it as "The drugs work, and they enhance serotonin, so it must be serotonin." Not necessarily true. Could be another effect the drugs have, or the studies were bad. The part where the host asked if it was due to placebo got clobbered, so we don't know what he said then, other than it probably wasn't a placebo effect (and thud due to bad study design).

I think it's an American attitude that's the problem. If you had taken the people that were adults in 1950, and put them in the same situation we are today with the pandemic and the shut downs, they would be able to handle it much better than the generations of today. Their attitudes were better, they were used to struggling, and they used community and family ties to get through a lot of hardships. Today's people don't give a crap about anybody and anything and they are so arrogant and think that they need everything now and they cry when they can't have things.

This was presented in a deliberately vague way, with the predictable pharmaceutical lobbyist as a "guest" for a corporate media channel that relies on funding & ad revenue from pharmaceutical adverts.. What this doesn't say is that it isn't just any "study" it is a comprehensive umbrella review of around 550 peer reviewed studies and investigative reviews of other studies, each reviewing many other studies. They broke down the 550 studies to get down to 17 high quality meta-analyses, some which themselves analysed studies involving 150,000 people over a period of years. So they looked at all this information, going back decades, encompassing 100s of thousands of people across multiple studies & meta analysis's of multiple studies and other meta analyses. And came to the the conclusion that there is no convincing evidence that depression is caused by low serotonin. Even in studies where serotonin was deliberately reduced by environmental factors, it didn't convincingly show an increase in depression. In many cases there was evidence that showed that long term use can in fact reduce serotonin levels (in the same way long term supplementation of Melatonin decreases production of melatonin, as the body does what is most efficient) . Rather the comprehensive study suggests that depression is a reaction to external & environmental factors, economic factors, past trauma, daily stresses, current stresses, loss, loneliness, existential dread etc.
As someone who has tried numerous antidepressants that never ever worked, i can say truthfully that while i tried them for depression & anxiety, i was never as suicidal as i was on antidepressants. Particularly that of Aropax, which was later banned as it was proven to increase suicidal ideation in much the same way that Zoloft was. Of interest is the fact that many different SSRIs are in fact basically the same as older versions, just tweaked slightly to renew the patents, even though it is effectively the same medicine. And this goes for even banned medicines like Aropax. Throughout my years i went on them, off them, changed to different types, & went off them, SSRIs, Triciclics, SNRIs, & SSRIs again, but the side affects & numbness of emotion, the dry mouth & lack of concentration, occasional shakes & dizziness, & the complete reduction of libido, were always worse. And of course i knew what was the cause of my depression, & that was my reality of having been fostered, plus having no roots & no family, plus later having gone through an earthquake that destroyed much of what was dear to me, of the places & vibrant scene in my city that i came to be a part of & the base of the family of friends that i met along the way.. I tried many SSRIs to try to balance out the symptoms of all that, but always found the same conclusion, that for me at least, the side affects were worse..
But what ultimately worked for me was a combination of meditation, exercise, therapy, magnesium to reduce muscle tension, Chicken bone broth, working on my own issues, & adrenalin inducing activities that force me to focus on the moment like Downhill MTB or skateboarding, particularly Downhill MTB.. I know some people that SSRIs worked for, but many that they had the opposite affect, & others who became essentially addicted, & it was largely no different coming off them than any other addictive drug that also alters brain chemistry.. From my experience, & my own long suspicion, this huge meta analysis of many other meta analysis's, the gold standard of reviews, vindicates my own experience & thoughts on these drugs.. And my suspicion of the profit motive pushing what is best for the profit motive rather than focusing on root causes..

Dear Jack I’m wondering how old you are now. You sound as though you’re still fairly young since you are concerned about your parents not loving you if they know.
Who is it that is blaming you and make you feel responsible?
Please believe that any sexual act you do not agree to is not your fault at all.
I can empathize with you, and I understand how you’re feeling to some degree.
      I had a similar situation when I was about 11 or 12.
A “Christian“ couple (church friends of my parents) were over for dinner. The husband accosted me when no one else was around. It both shocked and scared me, and I probably was too afraid to tell anybody. However, I guess he thought that I might tell, so he preemptively lied and told them that I had “come on” to him.
My parents and his wife believed him, and I was chastised and blamed for it.
I still recall the level of hurt and betrayal I felt being at being automatically assumed to be the guilty party.
To be sure, I was a rebellious preteen at the time, but I feel things like this are what made me rebellious, not the other way around.
I hope you can find someone to confide in that will help you with your depression. If there is a teacher at your school or some professional person you can trust and feel you can confide in, or even an older friend, perhaps it would help to talk with someone.
I am sorry that you have suffered this trauma. I understand your fears as much as I can. Always remember: *It was NOT YOUR FAULT.* It could not be because *you were a child.* This realization has probably helped me more than anything.

I am a woman in my thirties who has been suffering from Post SSRI Sexual Dysfunction (PSSD) for 8 years, one of the many people ruined by SSRIs who don't know how to recover their sexuality and all that revolved around it (no small feat!). There are young people in the PSSD community who have taken their own lives because of the syndrome. Many have taken SSRI drugs for mild issues and are now ruined. There needs to be a lot more focus on this topic...PSSD could happen to anyone who takes SSRIs, because with current knowledge it is not predictable, the etiology is not even known, and there is no cure. Patients are trying to raise money for scientific research because they are abandoned by the health care system that has harmed them instead of making them better. It is an absurd reality from many points of view.

Some people may have actual imbalances. But most of us aren't born with depression, it's something that develops from the environment we're in and can become chronic if left without care. I'm only speaking for myself, but my depression and anxiety disorder didn't develop until my emotional, mental, and spiritual needs were neglected for many years in my environment with a combination of complex events throughout my life that I could not control all the time or get away from. And having adopted a unhealthy mindset from family and external influences, I wasn't aware how harmful it is/was, it just was how things were. I wonder if depression starts, you know like a snow ball when one or a mix of emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual needs aren't met and it just get's worse as needs continue to be unmet. And it's even harder when it starts at a young age. The Dalai lama said, "Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive." At first I didn't fully understand this, but as I got older, it's true on a mirco and macro scale.

I have drug resistant depression, this basically means that if I take drugs they don’t really help my depression, but I then have to suffer with loads of side effects! After years of bouncing from drug to drug and experiencing ever side effect going, I eventually got off it all and just have CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) and DBS (Deep Brain Stimulation). The DBS has by far been the best thing that has ever happened to me, the only problem is I can only have this treatment for brief periods of time, then I have to go through a break period… The effects do taper off over time, but it’s horrible to be ‘normal’ while in the treatment phase, then gradually declining mental health until I can have another round. I feel depression is caused by a situation of suffering that (one feels) will never change or cannot be changed, but also has come to a place were it is unendurable. Anti-depressants seem to make a person care less- a temporary solution but not a good one. Natural endorphins are far better, and fitness is a secondary benefit.

What you’ve described is what we unofficially call situational depression. A person goes through hard times, experiences a loss etc and becomes sad, depressed. But this is a diff animal from true clinical depression. The difference? With “clinical depression” (another unofficial term), a person can experience it when truly nothing has or is going wrong in their life. There is no loss or trauma, no difficulty that led up to the depression. Or more accurately, any hardships they may have exp, are not correlated to their depression whatsoever. I’ll be the first to admit, we don’t understand what causes it or 100% how to treat it. Not even 90%. But to say SSRI’s make one care less, is inaccurate. Some of the older anti-psychotics definitely had this effect. But that’s honestly not what antidepressants do. I assure you, people that take SSRI’s, care & feel things intensely. So, although we don’t understand the exact mechanism, countless studies have shown they can be effective to help some w/depressive symptoms. All of this said, we’ve known for many yrs that treating depression is not as simple as taking an SSRI. There can be hormonal, endocrine, nutritional & other health probs that impact mood & depression. Not too mention, environment! And personally, I encourage anyone exp depression to find a good therapist. Often, therapy can do more than pharmaceuticals could ever dream of doing. In the end, it’s a personal decision. There is no one size fits all. And almost always, treating depression requires a multi-faceted approach, not simply taking a pill. Just my 2 thoughts. (More like 5-6 thoughts. Lol)

They are only helpful for 40-60% of people.
They only cause remission of depression in 30-45% of people who take them.

Not in all, but in MOST cases of depression and/or anxiety I have seen in variety of people is the result of their socio-economic position in society--not in a chemical imbalance in the brain. If people's needs are met, if they are free from abuse and soul killing jobs, etc., if they have a real chance at self-actualisation, they may feel depressed or anxious at some points in their lives, but it will never be a constant battle for them. All the medical profession is doing is pushing "legal" drugs to solve problems that users of Illegal drugs do, Either way, whoever the makers are of the drugs, legal or illegal, they are the ones benefiting from selling the drugs, not the poor sods who get talked into taking the drugs because we are all taught from childhood to "trust" people in certain professions. The truth is everyone needs to seriously question what the "experts" are telling them and do their own research to find out what exactly the experts are pushing on the patients and WHO really benefits from being on antidepressants for 40 or 50 years. Hint: it is not the patients who benefit.
