  • With Taekwondo and Karate gaining momentum in the MMA world, we wanted to share one way to defend against the side kick. Remember that this is a linear strike, so creating angles is key to avoid taking any damage.

    Normally in my sparrings I get punished a lot with teeps and side kicks when im applying pressure so could you do a video about applying pressure "safely" for the different type of guards? Thanks

    • @daannoomen775
      @daannoomen775 6 років тому

      Fitness & MMA Playlists which martial art are you practicing? I normally step in when I see a side kick or a teep coming my way with my shoulder forward taking the hit, if you're on time, the kick doesn't have much power and you can counter from the position bc they are off balance (most of the time) :)

    • @MyHelder2011
      @MyHelder2011 6 років тому +13

      The usage of the teep in Muay Thai is so you could stop your opponent from keep pressuring forward. So if you run into a teep, it's pretty normal when coming forward during sparring. There isn't really a safe way to come forward, because inside your opponent's reach there's always something he could do, so you just need to figure some things out that fit your own style.
      BUT, when you get teep'ed more than once during a round you could 'fake' the pressure so your opponent would react by setting up the teep, and then reacting yourself by parrying the teep and counter it.
      I would suggest drilling alot of teep counters, and after a while it would become 'routine' that you'd parry and counter every teep you see coming.

      Another tip: make angles on him while pressuring forward. A teep comes in a straight line, so angles would make him miss.

    DUDE! I was on my first kickboxing tournament and I watched your videos before that. 30 seconds into the fight and I crippled a guy with a strong low kick to the side of the knee. I saw that in your video, it's called "Calf Kick" or something. I was 2nd, but it went better than I thought it will.

      The side teep Kick is essentially just a side kick but instead of using your heel or the blade edge of the foot like you normally would, you’d use the ball of the foot for more of a pushing effect as if it’s a teep 👍🏽
      Also if you teep at a diagonal that counts too 👌🏽

      @jeremiahcollazo1430 6 років тому

      Yea but, where I'm taught we're taught to basically always keep out heads back and our hands up so idk if a spinning backfist would be the best idea and a spinning elbow definitely wouldn't reach

    when throwing a sidekick,make sure to lift your knee straight up instead of inward
    even when you're hopping,sliding or stepping.This gives the kick more power,reduces the distance it needs to travel,increases its speed and makes the kick less telegraphed as you can throw many kicks from this position(hook,roundhouse)

    If you could do more videos on side kick defense that’d be fantastic as it’s one of my favorites also but I always struggle to block it with my arms.
    One defense that works well for me is just taking my front leg and intercepting the kicking leg. (Place my foot over top of their thigh,shin,foot so they get jammed up)
    I’d love to hear how others actually defend them in practice

    Side kick is great when used properly. But I personally wouldnt stick my hand out and try to parry the kick, especially when its coming at you full force. I train in karate and Ive seen people move or change angle slightly with the kick and the arm gets caught when the parry fails. Id rather not stick my arm out, but great video either way

    Will you detail some techniques of the living legend Jorina ''Jojo'' Baars ? She's 44-0 in MT/KB she has a pretty flawless game. She's the only girl to have a W over Cyborg in the striking game. Her defensive game is impressive and she uses tons of feints like ''fake Stip"-jab-low kick, which is devastating. She might strike better than Ernesto Hoost himself. All her kicks mean danger. Honestly I've never seen anything such. Maybe it exists in Thailand, but this girl is the real deal

    Either angle when dodging is kinda sketchy because one side you have the right hand and the right kick to worry about and the other side after the side kick misses they can throw a spinning heel hook so after dodging close the distance quick

    Sidekick is the best kick going simple,you can’t defend the sidekick if used properly,it can be attacking and defensive,only problem what Shane showing is two types off sidekick,the best one and fastest one is one,is just fire it straight away hopping,best used to the knee,but works brilliant with the jab,and spinning backfist when missed,
