With reviews by audiophiles i dont get that grip of the product as consumer if would really like the product or would it be for me. Yeah you can only go so far with headphones. 50-70% of the cost of $500+ models comes from profit, marketing, labor/construction/design, and more-exotic-than-average materials.
Audio performance wise a cheap pair of $25-$40 Senfer DT6 or Samson SR850 can sound as good with nearly the same drivers and tuning as $80-$150 studio headphones from AKG and Sony. Same goes for the best performing $200-$400 models of IEMs & Over-Ears: more than that and at some point it becomes a luxury item or a product custom-made.

Does anyone else remember the first time you heard a system that blew you away? This is when the audiophile gene shows itself to be present or not. Mine was 60 years ago, with several more epiphanies over the next 10 years. But the joke was on me. As a well seasoned adult, I heard, during a test bench experiment, something I had been overlooking for all the previous years. Massive volume and dynamics ruins the sound quality in all but the most perfect rooms. I rediscovered my love for music at 80-90bd and optimized my system for my small overcrowded room. I feel like such a fool to have invested in huge speakers and crazy power for nearly 50 years only to end up with much smaller infinitely more practical speakers that produce the incredible sound I never knew existed. Sure some of the contemporary recordings are far superior to what was available 60 years ago. But now everything is so much more alive and present. It's kind of comical that for the last few years I still find myself up until the wee hours of the night playing music on a system that is very difficult to turn off to go to bed. And it is the first thing I turn on every morning. What a wonderful psychosis.

I love a good pair of headphones... But a good stereo is something else. I mean sometimes when you want to pick up the tiniest details, headphones can be great. When you really want to immerse yourself in the music and be wowed by it - then speakers are the way to go. There's just magic in having the sound completely fill the space around you, and even feeling it through your skin.

I burst out laughing and then removed the headphones and she then heard nothing except the small sound from the cups as she stared at the desktop speakers. She was in total shock. Made my day. Btw, this was just a UA-cam video.

I dumped a pair of Klipschorns on my mother because for a while I didn't have a place to put them. I apologized profusely and promised I'd get them back out of her house asap. But since they were there I hooked them up so she could use them. She used them and very much appreciated them for their volume and clarity, and so they stayed. I do not consider them to be the purest of hifi sound by any means, but they can play loud with ease, which means you can have them on in the other room and hear them clearly while in the kitchen doing dishes. They may not have the finesse of some speakers, but I'll bet they could blow even those SVS ultra towers out of the water in terms of sheer volume with minimal distortion. Even in the same room, mom like to turn them up loud, because she could!

I'm and old fart, and my Dad had a taping studio. Reel to reel tape decks. He collected music and many other audio things. I grew up listening to music through speakers, and gained my Dad's "ear" while changing bass and treble settings for him, listening intently to see if I could detect the minute adjustments I was making. My grandfather also had a nice audio set up in his rec-room as well. I grew up listening to music all the time.
Today, people listen to music on their phone speaker or ear buds. They have no idea of the immersiveness they are missing out on. At one point as an adult, I had a nice Sansui receiver and 4 speakers, and I used to sit in the middle of my studio at night, close my eyes, and listen to Electric Light Orchestra.......and get lost in the experience, transported to somewhere else. Today's younger people have no idea what music can be. Today's "stuff" marketed as music is abhorrent. This is why the music I grew up with is the MOST streamed music, and why there are SO MANY UA-camrs with reaction channels....hearing MY music for the first time.....and discovering what REAL music is. Now......they just need to experience it the right way.

What I dislike about expensive headphones is that they trade the comfort of being light for materials that don't make a difference on longevity. The Sony MDR-7506 are plastic, light and last forever. Other than that, sometimes they put unique headbands that have weaknesses, like on the Rode NTH-100, the leather strap on the HiFiMan, and the swivel joint on the Takstar Pro82 (CoolerMatser MH752) and Apple Airpods Max.

I’ve discovered that some people listen to music less intently or with the same level of focus as an “audiophile” might. And some people, especially listening to songs that they like, simply stop hearing all the fine details and just get lost in the music.
… Of course, an audiophile would argue that the right hardware helps achieve that effect best. I would agree with this opinion.

Headphones are great for convenient on the go and silent non-intrusive critical listening. But when you have the space (room corrected) and budget, you absolutely just can’t beat speakers.
The the relatively larger drivers are going to flat out beat the acoustic physics of the much smaller ones in the headphones (no replacement for displacement), and the feeling of spaciousness that you get from speakers can’t be completely replicated on headphones. The superior tactility of the bass on speakers is a complete experience too.
If you can dial in the speaker setup just right, you can also make them sound just as detailed as the headphones as well. The hard part is dialing the setup in just right and the amount of space required to set them up properly, both of which gets most people. Room correction technology though goes a pretty good way of fixing a lot (but not all) of the problems.

Neither is my last pair but both do a different job and I'm likely to change them as budget/inclination allows. Both do a different job. I use the headphones more because it doesn't disturb my family and I can chill with a drink and analyse. The speakers, when they're out/I don't care about disturbing them/educating, it's more encompassingly pleasurable. Love my headphones too and it's a different type of pleasure. There's no wrong answer.

This is what what most people who listen to music without caring about measurements and reviewers and marketing, really car about.
There seems to be a bias from the headphone hobbyists/ audiophile world to equate their terminology to what is being produced sound wise.
And then there’s what Courtney was describing, while she may not know the terminology that we all use incorrectly. Because no two audio fan or reviewer really have a definite answer to what words like “musicality or dark or warm or bright” really mean.
It’s always goal post shifting depending on the reviewers preferences.

Aune X7s Class A Headphone Amp
AKG K701 Modded (diy leather / alcantara pads)
    Sennheiser HD58x
But I also use the DAC for my Desktop Setup with a Shiit Rekkr Class A amp and a pair of Elac BS243.3 with Jet tweeters and diamond mid-bass speaker in diamond shape.
When I spin up a FLAC file on Audacious (Linux) like idk "Sabrina Claudio - Frozen" or "Sabrina Claudio - Stand Still" they are in a deep shock how they can see the speakers but hear the voice coming from the monitor and all the instruments flying around the room :D
So the DAC was 280Euros, the Shiit Rekkr was 240euros, the SS3602 OpAmp was 100Euros and the two Elac BS243.3 were 450euro a piece.

A lot of music and quality of said music does not benefit from more detail or even clarity, and I think if more musicians knew what level of detail headphones are revealing about their recordings these days they would shit themselves in embarrassment. Some would say that wasn't their intention at all with the music itself, that recordings have nothing to do with live music and the experience of it. I think it is easier for people to understand that than why audiophiles are into what they are into.

When you're used to 1000 dollar headphones, you know what you're looking for, if it's detail, soundstage, or straight up a FR that suits your taste. For someone who's listening to whatever is the cheapest or any tws they can afford, they don't know what to look for. People understand bass because it's the more recognizable aspect when it's missing.

Price to performance really seems to go IEMs > speakers > headphones. Nothing provides quite the bang for buck like a sub-$30 IEM like the Moondrop Quarks DSP or the 7Hz Salnotes Zero. Headphones to me are just the compromise I have to make when I want that immersive soundstage but I need/want to avoid bothering people nearby or I can't be bothered to go sit down in the living room away from my desk.
I think headphones continue to be hyped as a product category because reviews and buying options are also a lot clearer in the headphones space compared to speakers and way less numerous compared to IEMs. Dongles and headphones jacks are also usually sufficient for headphones while speaker amps are pretty pricey and/or less flexible/scalable than with headphones, where only a small handful of headphones need an exceptional amount of power to drive them.

I agree with you but would like to add that each of them has strengths and weaknesses that can't be fixed by throwing money at them.
You can get really good price to performance in every area, but you can't cheat physics. You can get amazing sound with a 500$ speaker setup that no IEM or Headphone can replicate, because they have a room to back them up.
IEMs can get you into some details and bass for very cheap that is crazy expensive to do with speakers.
Headphones are weird because the prices are retarded, the really good ones are just stupidly priced, but I hope chi-fi can beat some sense into the market at some point.
