I feel like it's going to be one of those "gray area" situations where both sides are trying to achieve something based on their beliefs and it just so happens that one side's beliefs contradict with the other. Kinda like the plot for sonic and the black knight or like this part of "Open your heart" from Sonic Adventure: "You and I are same in the way that We have our own styles that we won't change Yours is filled with evil and mine's not There is no way I can lose"
While the Cyberspace Stages look like narrow hallways, I feel that instead of spreading the paths out on the X Axis, I think they are going back to the Top, Bottom and Middle path system. I could be wrong, but after rewatching the footage multiple times, I have come to this conclusion.
I think it's gonna be something like Sonic and the Black Knight. By this mysterious new worlds standards Sonic is technically the villain and sage is probably the "guardian" of that world but Sonic knows that something fishy is going on and only wants to save his friends so he's temporarily pretending to be the "bad guy" in order to do what's right. He also seems to be corrupted because as you can see his arm starts to glitch at one point in the trailer.
True. Could this be the return of Dark Sonic into canon? Maybe there's a secret back half where Amy/Tails/Knux fight him back to save the world, a la LOU2?

I’ve always liked the concept of Sonic being “the bad guy”. It played phenomenally in Sonic and the Black Knight and the resemblances from that game is apparent in Sonic Frontiers. I can’t wait to learn more about the world and the story, and I’m especially glad that we’re getting the old school Sonic back based on what the trailers have shown 🔥🔥

Sonic would never do anything to harm anyone or the world. But since Sage only attacks Sonic because she thinks he's bad, does that mean she's actually a good guy too???🤔 I need more details.

But this new villain in the game "sage" is different because she thinks Sonic is the villain.

The thing about these "biomes" for me is that they're basically palette swaps it appears. All the terrain and traversal looks to be exactly the same, just some with trees, others with water.... unlike a say, Mario Odyssey, where each world played way differently from what another.
Like Noah said, I don't blame people for wanting to separate the story from the gameplay. It is something you realize with time, and as games get more complex, you start seeing that each has as much importance as the other. That said, I think this Sonic game specifically is going to be the one who's going to rely the most on the lore, aside titles that actually make it almost a means to (like The Dark Brotherhood). I hope the gameplay to be meaningful in terms of progression so we'll get the most out of this seemingly new world.
I think the reason why Sonic might be the "bad guy" or the "problem" is because the corruption that was on his hand and arm could slowly be taking over his body and consuming it with evil, thus causing him to spiral out of control and to later cause destruction hence Sage saying "Your reckless actions will endanger the world" which will foreshadow that i think.
I'm not sure how relevant this is to the video, but the discussion of whether Sonic should be in a realistic environment is an interesting one. An obvious answer might be no, because he's a cartoon character, who would look out of place in a realistic world. However, if that's the case, why would a game like Mario Odyssey be able to have a realistic world? Well, the reason it was done in that game was to intentionally make Mario seem out of place, to invoke the feeling that one gets when they're traveling to an unusual place. For any design decision such as this, what the choice is trying to achieve and how well it does that are both important factors in determining whether it's a good decision. Thus, the question of whether Sonic should have a realistic artstyle should be judged on a case-by-case basis.
Those pre rendered scenes won't be in the game. Doesn't make sense for a game with a full day and night cycle. You go to a location at noon, then the cutscene begins and it's at night suddenly, the cutscene ends and it's back to noon. We might get CG cutscenes bookend the game.

If the ancient civilization was punished by gods for abusing Chaos Emeralds, then Sonic can be punished for the same... along with entire world.
